Context

A VET School for Catering and Tourism

Vocational schools and Lyceums: different entry levels, same required levels for the State Exam

Weak, lacking basic preparation, even in the mother tongue

Study of two foreign languages – From 3 to 2 hours in the “Triennio”

1st and 2nd year: Grammar

3rd, 4th, 5th year: ESP

Low ratings low self-esteem lack of motivation and commitment increasingly failing performances

Procedures

Task 1

• In pairs, then in small groups: Students write simple WH-Questions to ask about Hobbies, Sports and school (timetable, subjects, Labs etc.)

• In plenary (IW): They share their questions and correct each other, if necessary

• Then students answer individually

Task 2

• Roleplay: in turn 2/3 students perform the interview, asking/answering the questions

Task 3

• Online meeting (Skype): in turn students ask/answer questions

• An observer-teacher fills in the observation grid

Closing remarks

Positive

• No marks= Higher motivation and commitment, less concern and anxiety

• No-native speakers partner = students feel at ease, no worry about mistakes

• Challenging, engaging, unusual activity

• Same difficulties, same feelings = Empathy

• Language and culture

Negative

• «Artificial» situation: no need to speak English with Italian students! – no participation

General

• Need to consider the students’ real entry levels to re-think about real exit levels in Language Learning

• CLIL in Vocational and Technical Schools

• Chances to improve online interactions
