The cellar, surrounded by vines, was made famous by the Ticino star architect Mario Botta with a new building in 2009. A stroke of luck for Moncucchetto. (22) white Śšŝš The Obrechts from Jenins have been making wine for generations. To be precise: They began in 1848, the founding year of modern Switzerland. The peak crop of their Zur Sonne wine estate is a Pinot noir of separately picked, extract-rich grapes from old vines, mostly from the Eichholz location: the Monolith that stands out from the wine landscape. Christian and Francisca Obrecht, the fifth generation, have been running the business for the past 12 years with over 6 hectares of vineyards. With 75 per cent Pinot noir is the main variety, but the trend has been pointing towards white for a few years now. What made the coveted white wines of the Bündner Herrschaft a rare commodity. These include the whites of Obrechts, such as the Riesling-Sylvaner Schiefer, a fresh, crisp aperitif (10.8 vol.-%). That was in 1862, when the small village of Vétroz split off from the larger town of Conthey and became a politically independent municipality. In memory of the great-grandfather of the senior of the currant company, Jean Fontannaz, the year 1862 is printed on every bottle label of the Celliers de Vétroz in gold. Jean Fontannaz, originally a teacher by profession, on the side also administrator of the bank Raiffeisen in Vétroz, is now 88, but still has an eye on the work in the vineyard. (27) white Wine of Heart The family names Roduit and Desfayes are deeply rooted in Valais viticulture. But only 15 years ago, the couple Claudine and Yvon Roduit-Desfayes plucked up the courage to step into self-employment with their winery La Rodeline. Additional good vineyards were gradually added to the family-owned terraced areas. Nowadays there are just over six hectares in Fully (Les Claives, Combe dʼEnfer, Le Raffort, Les Epalins, Plamont) and Leytron (En Praz, Perronne), which are managed by Claudine and Yvon Roduit-Desfayes. Rodeline, the name of her domaine, can be explained by abbreviations such as Ro for Roduit, de for Desfayes and ine pour Claudine. Their white top wine, the Blanc dʼY, like Yvon Roduit bears a Y in the name and consists of the three varieties Roussanne and Marsanne (also called Ermitage in Valais) and Petite Arvine. Velvety, dense, richly opulent bouquet, mirabelle jelly, honey, apricot blossoms, vanilla. (28) red Gold medal The sun-drenched canton of Ticino, beyond the Alps, is home to an astounding number of winegrowers: according to statistics, there are 3,730. They usually own tiny plots smaller than 2,000 m². Only four percent have vineyards covering 10,000 m² and more. The entire area under vines of 1040 hectares lies in the southern part. Ralph Theiler from the Malcantone, one of the hopeful young Ticino winemakers, leads the winery Theilervini founded in 2007 in Bosco Luganese. He cultivates his vineyards on the most beautiful slopes of Croglio, Bombinasco, Cademario, Bosco Luganese, Bioggio, Medeglia, Bironico and Origlio. Altogether there are four hectares of vineyards. He has already had some success stories: his Merlot Gioia dʼAutunno won a gold medal at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse for two consecutive years.. (30) red Burgundy from Lake Biel «I make five different pinots to show how to play with this strain», explains winemaker Lukas Hasler from Lake Biel. (31) red Hellish Syrah The young Domaine Histoire dʼEnfer in the Valais wine-growing village of Corin-sur-Sierre has only a few, but the very best vineyards. Owners of the winery, founded in 2007, are three enthusiastic, wine-fanatical friends around the charismatic Dr. med. Patrick Régamey. A wine creator who for decades slowly approached the secrets of the juice of the grape. As a member of the international tasting group Grand Jury Européen, he got to know the best Hermitages as well as the great Burgundians. The view beyond the horizon, which many Valais winemakers are missing, Régamey had from the very beginning. In 2008, the first vintage was vinified with its own grapes. Today, just over seven hectares are cultivated and annually about 28,000 bottles filled. A fascinating, «hellish» Syrah the «LʼEnfer de la Patience» is.
