PRESS RELEASE Greek lessons for Europe

Berlin, April 29, 2010 – Aspen Institute Italia is organizing, in cooperation with the Italian Embassy to Germany, Aspen Institut Deutschland and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the international conference “Europe in the G-20 world”, at the Adlon Kempinski Hotel in Berlin, on April 29-30.

The conference takes place behind closed doors. Two meetings with the press are scheduled for Friday, April 30, at 10.30 am and at 1.00 pm. Journalists may interview single participants outside program hours and upon communicating with the Institute’s press office.

The debate focuses on the role of Europe as a global player which is still being defined: the future of the Old Continent is weighed down by uncertainties such as the economy, finances and political credibility - the inability to speak with a single voice in an multipolar international order.

In an era which some define as post-Atlantic, Europe needs to know how to triangulate with Russia and the United States in order to guarantee better military and energy security for itself and the world. The second day of the conference will focus on the economic agenda which foremost sees the urgency for fiscal policy reform and for the monitoring of the monetary crisis brought on by the situation in Greece. Various proposals will be compared on guaranteeing stabilizing mechanisms for the future which would help to avoid dangerous situations for the euro and for the solidity of the international economic system. The general objective of the conference is to define guidelines and recommendations on these strategic issues to submit to European decision- makers.
