have just returned from mainland China: Pek- ing, Canton, Shiuchow,with
a brief visit at the endto
Macau andHong
Kong.I am very grateftil
to those who prepared the details of the journeywith
such dedication and intelligence.The Asian continent has always led me to medi- tate deeply
on the
mysteryof the
Church and its charismata. And nowhere wasthis
morethe
case thanin
China: a peoplewith
a populationof
more than one thousand million! Two thousand years af-ter
Pentecost the vast majority of these people arestill
unawareof the
grace and redeeming newsof
the Risen Christ. Recently they have lived through a (cultural revolution, which has placed them on akind of new launching pad, even though there is an evident need to find a good and abundant fuel able
to bring
aboutthe
actual take-offinto the
future.There is growing up at the
presentday, and it
springs
from
the insuppressible hopein

heart, a kind of intuition that there are better times ahead.
The story of the Chinese missions is a long one.
It
beganwith
the first contacts made by a groupof
Nestorianmonks in the
seventhcentury.
These were followedby
various approachesin the
thir- teenth and sixteenth centuries, andby
subsequent initiativesof
the Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans,the
Paris Foreign Missionary Society, the Augusti- nians, DivineWord
Fathers,the
Scheut religious, Trappists, Marists,various native
Congregations,and finally by
severalreligious institutes in
the twentieth century, including our Salesian Family.It
is a long and tormented story, and is linked unfor- tunately (even though
in
general only incidentally)with
sad colonializing initiatives by some European powers.How much
sacrifice there has been, and how many martyrs!On the other hand the widespread existence
of
non-christian religions, rootedin
the local culture of ancestor worship and permeatedwith
alienating aspectslinked with mythology and
superstition, has destroyed the authenticity of the religious senseof the
objective realismof the "history of
salva-tion",
centred on man.The cultural revolution
madeevery effort
toroot out
everything that was religious ("the opium of the people,) and foreign ("colonialism"), and hasIeft in its wake an
immense andcertainly
fertile field to be cleansed, ploughed and sown.The first period of our
salesian presence in mainland China- from
1906to the
early 50's-
saw the
birth of
Don Bosco's charisma among the poor andlittle
onesin
conjunctionwith

with
a capacityfor
heroic witness and perseverance. Some confreres from that period arestill in
the mainland, providingin
a wonderfulway
shining signsof fidelity
andfruitful
seedsof
rebirth.It
seems that the Chinese people are now on the thresholdof
a new eraof
progress; one feels that the pulseof
the nation is throbbingwith
a rhythm previouslyunknown. Could it be that the
great hour of the country's resurgence is about to strike?Numerous seeds have already been
buried
inChina's soil;l the Church too has rethought in
depth the nature of her mission and the mannerof
carryingit out,
after recognizingthe
many short- comingsof
recent centuries. VaticanII
has intro- duced big changesinto
missiology andin
the kindof
ecclesialactivity of the
various charismata; on account of this, missionaries of today and tomorrow (ourselves among them)will
be ableto
respond in more adequate fashionto the
appealwhich is
al- ready beginningto be
heardfrom the great
and promising yearningof
Chinese hearts.Our holy
Founder Don Bosco sawin a
dreamthe
developmentof the
salesian presence, even though he added(but
100 years have already goneby
sincethen) nbut the time is in the
handsof
God".2
The journey
which I
havejust
made as RectorMajor

pilgrimage.Four
days in Peking, another four in Canton and Shiuchow, and finally nearlytwo
daysin
Macau and Hong Kong.The main objectives were:

'88.The feast of the Assumption at Peking From Rome
I
flew directlyto
Peking.In this capital during the Marian Year,
I
wanted to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the BlessedVirgin Mary into
heaven: the event which marks the beginning of her maternalwork
as Helpof
Christians through the centuries.I
had mademy

of the wholeworld in
making a special Actof
Entrustmentof all the
young peopleof
China to Mary Help of Christiansin
Peking Cathedral which is dedicatedto
the Immaculate Conception.And so I went to the
cathedral(or
southern church).I
was accompanied by the Regional Coun-cillor
(Fr Thomas Panakezham) and by my brother(Fr
Angelo), and kneelingin
the second bench on the left and in the presence of these two competent witnessesI recited the formula of
Entrustment,which I
include as arl appendixto this letter.
We then took part together as members of the faithfulin
the Mass celebratedin
Latin.Looking around
the
cathedralwe
saw fixed to one of the columns near the entrancethe
1987 cal-endar for the
so-called"Patriotic
Association"which manages the churches open to the public: at
the
centreit had a beautifirl
colouredpicture of Mary Help of
Christians, exactlylike that of
Val- docco.It
seemedto
us a significant indication.We knew already that on 19 January 1949 Mary Help of Christians had been proclaimed the special Patroness
of
Peking.But we
hadconfirmation of
something else:in the first
Synodof the
Chinese Bishops (14 May-
12 June 1924) the entire people of China were entrustedto
Mary invoked as "Auxi-lium
Christianorum,Mater
gratiae, Celestis Sina-rum
Reginar.At
Shanghai, on the famoushill of
Zo-sd, thereis a
splendid basilica dedicated preciselyto
Mary"Auxilium Christianorum"; the statue,
identicalwith
that ofTurin,
risesin
motherly fashion abovethe high altar.
Alreadyin the
previous century3 a hexagonal chapel had beenbuilt
on thishill in
her1868

Peking was intendedto

aspectin the forefront,

strongly significant element. The outcome of our missionaryactivity will
alwaysbe linked with a
sincere and trusting devotionto
the Motherof
God andof
the Church.Don Bosco's missionary dreams
Before leaving Rome
I
had read once againwith
carefrrl attention Don Bosco's five great missionary dreams: about Patagonia,6 South America,T a large number of missionary presences,8 Africa, Asia, Au- stralia and Oceania,e and the trans-continental line stretching from Valparaisoto
Peking.t0Don Bosco spoke explicitly
of
Chinain
narrat- ing the fourth andfifth
dream. He saw his sons pre- sent there in big numbers and carrying out an effi- caciouswork
of evangelization. He was convincedthat Our
Lady wanted his followersfor

I went to that river
and stoodon the
famous bridgewhich
crossesit. (Marco
Polo describedit in 'Milione').
And later on whenI told
the confre- res of the province thatI
was a Rector Major who had comefrom
Valparaiso and Santiago and had reached Peking,I
saw ontheir
faces both emotion and great hope.For the moment there remain in
mainland China only a handful of confreres who have borne witnesswith a heroic fidelity lasting more
thanthirty
years to the love of the Chinesefor
Don Bos- co's charisma and their unfailing conviction of hav- ing experienced through their profession the attrac- tion and efficacy of the Lord's Gospel for the youthof their
immense country; theynow
see appearing on the horizon new possibilitieswith
great promise.In
the course of my travelsI
have been able to verify to some extent in the different continents the prophetictruth of the
missionary dreamsof

One
of the
objectivesof my visit to
mainland China had been precisely that of visiting the places whereMgr
Versiglia andFr
Caravario had carried outtheir
apostolicwork
and where they had beenmartyred. This is why I had invited my
brother Angelo, Provincialof
the Central Frovince based atTurin, to
accompany me. Seven years ago he had been miraculously curedof an
inoperable cancer after insistent prayersof
the confrereof
the Milan province (ofwhich
he was then Provincial)to
ourtwo
martyrs.We have been to the places where they worked and gave
their
testimony;we
prayedin
gratitudefor
the past and asked that the seedof
these mar-tyrs might be fertile for the future,
andwe
were ableto
concelebratea
sung Eucharistwith
Gre- gorian chantin
aform which
though rather isola- ted was very moving and meaningful,in the little
churchof
Saint Teresain
Shiuchow. We were ac- companiedby the
subdued voicesfrom
outsideof
some "Sisters Announcersof the Lord"
(the local Sisters foundedby Mgr
Versiglia);they
were not allowedto
come inside.We recalled the words of John Paul
II
in his ho- mily at the Mass of Beatification of the two martyrsin
St Peter's Square in Rome: 1a oln every age and in every place martyrdom is an offering of love for thebrethren
and especiallyfor the
peoplefor
whose benefit themartyr
offers himself. The blood of thetwo
Beati is therefore at the foundation of the Chi- nese Church, as the blood of Peter is at the founda-tion of the Church of
Rome.We must
therefore understand the witnessof their
love andtheir

profound harmony betweenthe
Gospel andthe
highest valuesof the
culture and spiritualityof
China.In

boys andgirls, the
youngmen and women, and the
simple peopleof
the fields and townsof the
great and numerous Chi- nese people. They love themnow

always do soin

thesetwo
mar- tyrs, the Salesianwill
never be a strangerin
China because he is a disciple of Christ who has chosen asthe
belovedcountry of his
vocation alsothe
cul- ture, the history, the projects, hopes and difficultiesof this
dear peace-loving peoplewhich
yearnsfor

various Chinese confreres, priests and brothers,who

ac-cept but to live in hope a opassion, which has gone

the past and also certain imposing initiatives of the presentday.

originality, magnificence, grandeur, skill and carefrrl attention to knowledge which, togetherwith rich
traditional values in a familiar context of social courtesy linkedwith
constant application towork,
make onethink
of thetruth
of what John PaulII
saidin
a meetingto mark the 4th
centenaryof Fr Matthew
Ricci:"The
particular
connotationswhich mark
civiliza-tion
andculture
are amongthe
mostwell
known and celebratedin the world,
autonomousin
theiroriginality of thought, of linguistic and literary
expression,of tradition and
usage,to such
an extentthat
they constitute oneof the
richest cen-tres of the

intellectual and human valuesof

instance the German P. A. Schall and the Belgian P.Ferdinand Verbiest, who was given a state funeral because of his contributions to knowledge, and the
Austrian P.
Augustovon Hallerstein), and
also some of the more famous Pagodasrich in
history.Going about on foot
in
the main streetsof
Pek-ing (which
has someten million
inhabitants) and visiting some of the supermarkets, one can become convinced in a practical fashion by the daily crowds of people that the Chinese are the most numerous nation on earth; alonein
fact they makeup
more than afifth of
all humanity.One
is
thereforenaturally led to think of
the particular seriousness of the problems of social co- habitation,of the
difficr:Ities experiencedin
struc- tures at local and state level, of the serious ethical problemsand the urgent
needto meet all
such demandswith
a proper viewof

who bring the
Gospel, promptedby
the power and light of the Holy Spirit,will
have to bearwell in mind the
particular valuesof a
people so greatnot

numbersbut
alsofor their

often cruel history of independence and libe- ration.The presence of <church>

said at the beginning of this letter, in China one immediately feelsthat
christiansare a "little flock"
immersedin
an ocean of brethren who have not yet heard the Good Newsof
the resurrection.The events
of
recent decades have resulted inthe
departureof
numerous missionaries, and theflock
has been decimated and-dispersed:in
1948there were more than
5,700priests and
nearly 8,000 religious brothers and sisters. Today they are very few:in
the wholeof
Peking there areonly
16priests, all
of
them membersof
the Patriotic Asso- ciation.Since 1978
the
Constitution has asserted thatthere is
personal freedomof belief, and
ensures thatthe
Statewill
protect lawfrrl religious activity, provided thatit
be not under controlfrom
abroad.The
policy of the
oUnitedFront" (which
dependson the Party) aims at uniting all the
country's effortsin
a common endeavourfor
the relaunching of the nation. While believers of various denomina-tions are
guaranteed religious freedom,they
are educated and actively involvedfor the
serviceof
the country's common good.There
is a
State Departmentfor
Religious Af- fairs,part of
whose task isto
reorganize and give direction to groups of believers, to rectifu errorsof

the recent past, to reopen places of worship, and to
work for
peace, allwithin
the ambit of the Party's religious policy.The christian faith is certainly still
alivewith
heroic expressions and a silent fertility.There exists an official "Catholic Patriotic Asso- ciation, which governs all public places of worship where sacramental rites are celebrated. These are
carried out in Latin and in
accordancewith
apre-conciliar
liturgy,
aswe were
ableto
seefor
ourselveswhen participating at
Massand
seeing a baptism administered.We were able
to
visit five churches open to the public: threein
Peking (the cathedral, the northern church and the eastern church); one at Canton (the cathedral) and one at Shiuchow (thatof
St Teresa of the Child Jesus).A little
conversationin
Latinwith
someof
the priestsin
charge made us feelour
brotherhood inthe
centralityof
Christ's mystery,the
importanceof Mary for
salvation history, and the urgent need to be able to communicate the Gospel to the peoplein
a better way.In communion oI hope with the universal Church Christ and Mary love the people of China, who are called
to
bethe
Peopleof
Godin
communionwith
allthe
redeemed. TheSpirit of the Lord
hasprompted the universal Church to proclaim
in China the Good News of the New Covenant, and is doing sostill.

Virgin,

more frequently and at greater depthof the
supreme and indispensable presence of sufferingin

my earnest hope that there may be in the heart of each one the same climate of hope and the same aposto-lic

made their profession on 14 May 1862: the social situation was unfavourable, nationalistic enthusiasm was empty-ing the
seminaries,the
State was banishing reli- gious, the Pope was considered a hostile temporal sovereign, current opinion on religious orders was generally negative, and yet those twenty-two young men dreamtwith

may almost seem foolhardyto try to
