My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I want to begin this letter which is intended to be an extended commentary on
the
subjectof the
Strenna,by greeting
mostaffectionately all my Salesian Brothers, and the
Salesian Sisters to whom bytradition
each yearin
the person ofMother
General the Strenna isfirst
presented.It
then becomes a single programme for the whole of our Salesian Family throughout the world.I
accompanythis
presentation of the Strennawith
my very sincere best wishesfor
Christmas andthe
New\bar - both of
them
celebrations ofthe Gift
and Grace ofthe Lord. I
would very much haveliked this to
be anopportunity for
a personal exchange of greetings. This not being physically possible,I
hopethat
at leastthis

was always very closeto
Don Bosco'sheart.
Aspart of our tradition, the first
messages
- similar to mottos -
go backto the
1850s.In
the"Biographical
Memoirs"'
we readthat it
was a practice of Don Bosco every so oftento write
alittle
noteto
someoneto
whom he wanted to give a piece of advice. Some of these have been pre- served andthey
are very personalinvitations to
do something good orto
avoid somethingthat
isnot
quiteright. But
besidesthis,
from thefirst
years of the Oratory, towards the end of the year, Don Bosco had begunto
givea
strenna/mottoto all
his boysin
general, and anotherto
each one individually. Thefirst
one,the
general one, usedto
consistin
recommending certainforms of behaviour and
somethings for them to
remember sothat
the new year about tostart
wouldgo well.
Don Bosco continued to give these strennas almost every year.The last Strenna -
Don Bosco's last Strenna for his boys-
was given in a situation that was very special. We find this too
in
the Biographical Memoirs.'Feeling that his final hour had come, Don Bosco had Don Rua and Mons Cagliero called, andwith
theIittle
strengththat
hestill
had gave them hisfinal
recommen- dationsfor
themselves andfor
all the Salesians. He blessed the housesin
America and manyof the
confreresliving in
them.He blessed
all the Italian
Cooperators andtheir
families, andfinally
he asked them to promisehim that
they would loue each other as brothersand
sisters... andthat
they would recornrnend frequent communion and deuotion toMary
Helpof

2. THE STRENNA, AN EXPRESSION OF UNITY FOR THE WHOLE
OF OI.IRSALESIAN EAMILY
It
is a distinguishing feature of our Salesian Familythat in
thefirst
placeit
is a charismatic familynin
whichthe
Primacy of God-Communion isthe heart
of Salesian mysticism.This
is so becauseit
takes us backto the origin
ofthat "charism" of the Spirit that
has been passed onto
usby
Don Bosco,by
us"to
be lived, safeguarded, deepened and constantly developed...in
harmonywith the
Body ofChrist continually in the
process of growth."uIn this communion we recognise the diuersity and at the same
time the unity that
hasits origin in baptismal
consecration,in
sharingthe Spirit of
Don Bosco andin participation in
the Salesian mission at the service of the young, especially the poor- est.uFor
this
reason,in
every Strenna we emphasisethis
aspect of communion which holds thefirst
placein
our Family. To the extentthat
the same Strenna can help the pastoral planningof
the different branches and groupsit
is welcome;but this
is notits
purpose. The intentionis
not to makeit
a pastoralplan for
the year, but rather
for it
to bea

LIKE DON BOSCO,
nowadays, meansfirst of
all comingto
know, and rediscoveringin all its
fulness,the spirit
of Don Bosco which today as always needs to have allits
charis- matic power and relevance.From everything that
could be said regardingthis
charis- maticgift,
for the presentI
shouldlike
to underlinejust
twoof its
aspects:.
Pastoral Loue (or theheart
ofthe
"Good Shepherd") as thedriving
force behind who Don Bosco was and what he did.. His ability to interpret "Today" in order
toprepare for
"Tofilorcou)".

Boscowith the heart of the "Good Shepherd."
The
heart
of Jesusthe
Good Shepherdis the hallmark of
all our apostolic work and an essential point of reference for us.At the
sametime
wefind in
Don Bosco apractical
approach"in
Salesianfashion"
(shapedby the extraordinary spirit of
Valdocco or the similar
spirit
of Mornese or what is most typicalof
every groupin our
Salesian Family).But
we knowthat

first point of
convergencewhich
applies toall is the
charismof
Don Bosco raisedup by the Holy Spirit for the
goodof
theChurch. This is what we call the
Salesiancharism which
includes and has a place for everyone.In
Don Bosco, "the happy expression (which was his planof Iife) 'that you
are youngis
enoughto
make me love you very much'was the watchword and even beforethat
the fundamental educational option of the Saint."? We know very wellthat
for his boys andfor
his youngsters"Don
Boscoundertook

series
of
activitiesby his
words,writings,
institutes, journeys, meetingswith
civil and religious authorities; for them, aboveall
else, he showed an attentive concern for each one individually, so
that in his fatherly
lovethe
boysmight
see a signof
a higher lovestill."'
It
wasthis
special love for the young, for each young person,that
ledhim to
do everythingthat
was possible,to
break every mould,to
confound every stereotypein order to
reachout
tothem. As Fr Francis
Dalmazzoat Don
Bosco's "canonical process of holiness" declared under oathin
1892: "One dayI
saw Don Bosco leave Don Rua and me who were accompanyinghim
to give a helping hand to a young builder's labourer who wasin
tears because he was unable topull
an overloaded cart; andthis
was on one of the main roads of the city."e
This
special lovefor the
youngled Don
Boscoto put
his whole beinginto
finding ways to help themin their
growth and development,their
human welfare andtheir
eternal salvation.This set
the
scenefor
the wholelife
ofour
father, being every-thing for them
evento his last breath.
Oneof our
Sisters, aDon Bosco scholar. expresses
this
verywell
when she writes:"Don Bosco's love
for
these youngsters was shownin
practical andtimely
gestures.He took

their
mosturgent
needs andinstinctively
those most hidden. To statethat
his heart was given over entirely to the boys meansto
saythat
his whole being, intelligence, heart,will,
physical energr, his whole being was directed towardstheir
good,to promoting their all-round
development,to
desiringtheir
eternal salvation. For Don Bosco, therefore, being a manof heart
meant beingtotally
consecratedto the
goodof his
boys and giving them his all even to his last breath."'oThis same zeal led him to
try
tofind
a solutionwith similar criteria to the
problems of younggirls, with the support
and cooperationof the
Co-FoundressMary
Domenica Mazzarelloand the group of young women united with her and in
a parochial setting dedicated to the Christian formation of girls.His pastoral heart led
him in
the same way to rely on other collaborators, men and women, those 'consecrated'with
formal vows, 'cooperators' associatedin
sharinghis
pedagogical and apostolic ideals."" To this should be added his activity as a great promoterof
a special devotionto Mary the
Helpof
Christians and Mother of the Church, and his care and continuing affection for his past-pupils.And
ashis
personaldriving
forceat the
centreof all this activity
and his vision there was"the
factthat
he achieved his personal holinessthrough his
commitmentto

leadthem to the fullness of that
humanlife that
was foundin the Lord
Jesus andwhich
took practicalform in the
possibility ofliving
as anupright
citizen and a child of God.This is the key
to
our existence, ourliving
andputting into
practice the Salesian charism.If
each one of us can come to feelin
our uery being,in
the depth of our beingthat
samefire, that
passion
for
educationthat
Don Bosco had, meeting each young personat
a deeply personal level, believingin
each individual, convinced bhatin
each one there is always a seedof
goodness and of the Kingdomin
order to help themto
give the very best of themselves andto
draw themto
a close encounterwith
the Lord Jesus, then we shall certainly embodyin
our lives the best of the Salesian charism.3.2.
Thehistory of
God, and, ofMankind
I
believe, andmany of
us believe,that Don
Boscohad
a specialability to
know howto
readthe
signsof the
times. He knew howto
makehis
own many ofthe
values offeredby
his own times in the frelds of spirituality, social life, education... and he was ableto
giveto all
ofthis
the very personal stampthat
distinguished him and set him apart from the other great menof
his times.All
ofthis
enabledhim
to understand the present as though he alreadylived in the future!
Don Bosco viewedthe
presentwith the
eyesof
'God'shistorian'; the
eyesof
someone who knows how to look at history and to recognisein it
the signsof
the Presence of God. History as present, not in the past! Looked atwith that clarity
which, at bestit
is possibleto
have only by interpreting eventsin
God, and in this way respond to the needs of his boys.Because
of this
wayof his
ofliving
and acting, we too are called today to ask Don Bosco to teach us to read the signs of the timesin

The Special General Chapter expressed
this
same conviction whenit
saidthat
"Don Bosco had to a very high degree a sense of awareness of the needs of the times... Hisfirst
collaborators were formedin this spirit...
Modern societywith its rapid
andprofound
changes demandsa
new type of person, capableof
overcoming the uneasiness causedby
changes, and continuingto look for solutions rather than take refuge in
ready-madeanswers... capable
of distinguishing what is
permanent fromwhat is
changeablewithout
goingto extremes"",
andin this
desireto bring the
charismup to
date,the path
beforeus
isrightly that
of seeking for ourselves his pastoral heart combinedwith that
same capacityfor flexibility,
adaptation seeingwith
the eyes offaith'the

4.1. WITH THE YOUNG being with them and among them
We say
WITH THE YOUNG!, brothers
and sistersof
our Salesian Family, because the starting point for our rnahing fleshand
blood(INCARNATING)
the Salesiancharism is by
ourBEING WITH THE YOUNG, being with them and
among them, beingin
contactwith
themin their
daily lives, knowingtheir world, loving their world,
encouragingthem to
be the protagonists intheir
own lives, reawakeningtheir
sense of God, helping them to livewith
high aims.The world of the young is a world of possibility.
In
order to be leaven in this world we have to hnow and appreciate in a positiueand critical
mannerwhat
the young appreciateand
loue. T}re challengeto our mission
amongthe young is linked to our
propheticability
to read the signs of the times, as we said earlier" SGC, n. 665.

in
other words, what is God saying to us and asking of us through these young peoplewith
whom we arein
contact.This
challenge beginswith our
havingthe ability to
listen and having the courage and the daringto
enterinto
a dialoguethat is "horizontal," without
entrenchedpositions, without
considering ourselves 'apriori' in
possession of thetruth.
When we take up the position of the "apprentist" we learn a great deal about them and about the image of the Church we are incarnat-ing for
them. Young peoplewith what they
say,through their
presenceor their 'indifference', with their replies
andtheir
absence, are demanding something from us. And also the
Spirit within them
andthrough them is
speakingto us.
We never emergefrom
an encounterwith
themunscathed but rather mutually
enriched and stimulated.4.2. WITH THE YOaNG! showing them our special pastoral

we sayWITH THE YOUNG!
becausewhat fills
our hearts from the vocational call ofJesusthat
each oneofus
has received isthe
special pastoral lovefor
boys andgirls,
young- sters, young men and women; a special lovethat will
showitself in
us asit
didin
Don Bosco, as a real 'passion', seeking what is best for them,putting
into this all our energies, every effort and every last breath we have.Our
communities, whatever Family group they may belongto
(whether they are corrln'Lunities of religious, conl.ntu,nitiesof
prayer and commitment, communities of witness...) should seekto
acquire"visibility"
amongthe
youngin their
own locality.This
visibility
requires discernment, choices and self sacrifice.Above all it means generosity in
service,joyful, friendly
relationships, in a community project of
prayers, gatherings and service. Morethan that it
needsan
"open house policy",with
avariety of initiatives for bringing
peopletogether

with
proposalsthat
respond to the problemsthat
young peoplein the
local area have. Who knows whetherthe
young people appreciate the value there is in being able to avail of a "Salesian house", being ableto
count on a group of friends. Being reallysignificant will
demandthat our communities
experience ahealthy
tension,which
leads onto
enquiry, discernment andthe making of
decisionsthat
haveto
beconstantly
assessed,prayed about and confirmed in fraternal life and
pastoral practice.4.3. WITH THE
YOUNG!especially
thepoorest
On
different
occasionsI
have saidthat
when Pope Francistalks about going to the peripheries,
addressingthe
whole Chuch, he is challenglng us in a very real and direct way because he is asking usto
be present on the peripherieswith
the young whoare
there,cut off from almost
euerything, exclud.ed and without opportunities.At the
sametime I
wantto
saythat
asthe
Salesian Family these peripheries are somethingtypically our
own, because the periphery forms an integralpart
of our Salesian DNA. What was Don Bosco's Valdoccoif
not the periphery of a large city? What was Morneseif
not arural
periphery? We need to make sure our examinationof
conscience asindividuals
and asthe
Salesian Family sees us facing up to the strong demand from the Church,which in its turn is part of
the essential natureof
the Gospel.It will
be necessaryto
question ourselves about beingwith
andfor
the young, especially the poorest, the needy,the
excluded...But it will not
be necessaryto
decide where weought to
be going, 'our pole star'becanseit
is among the least, the poorest, those who have the most need of usthat
the most characteristicfeature of our charismatic identity is to
befound, and it
isagainst this charismatic identity that we
needto
measure ourselvesin
order to find our place, our way of responding today to the mission,in

4.4. FOR fHE YOUNG! because they haue the right to
meet
role
modelsof
belieaers and,adults
It
is constantly becoming ever more evidentthat
our service to young people,to
a large extent consistsin
being role models of belieuers andadults
to looh up to. Young people are lookingfor
andwant to
meetup with
goodChristians who are
also"normal",
people they cannot
only admirebut
alsoimitate. In this
asin
other areas oftheir
lives"under
construction", they need to be ableto
see themselves reflectedin
others, they want to frndtheir
ownidentity
and learn to livetheir
own faith but by"contagion' (through a
life
witness)rather than by
indoctrina- tion.It
is for this reasonthat
our pastoralactivity
cannot follow auniform,
one-directional model, giventhat the
circumstances of adolescents and young people are so varied. Especiallyfor
us men and women educators,this
hasvery
serious implications such as being readyto
"lose one'slife'
givingit
up for the King- dom, accepting poverty, austerity, a soberlifestyle
as a freely chosenpastoral
approachat
personaland community
level,always
putting in
thefirst
place people, encountering them and being of service to them.4.5. FOR fHE YOUNG! for whom a personal encounter will
bethe opportunity for them
tofeel accompanied
Working
for
andwith
the young always has been and is notonly
a privilege of beingin
contactwith
people who are alive, filledwith
potential,with
dreams and freshness... but, above all,it
is an opportunitythat
is given to us to walkwith
them in. re'turnng
to Jesusin
order to make our ownhis life
andhis
mes- sage,without filtering
outits
radical nature,without trying
to avoid its uncomfortable challenge to our scale of values and our way of living.We are convinced that the Gospel, today as always, hasall the potential of
being listenedto,
heard and accepted anew as Good Newsin

In this being listened to and accepted, the Gospel presents us
wih the
challengeof committing
ourselves decisivelyto
the personal encounter, personalspiritual
accompanimentin
which every Salesian educator, man or woman, can propose pathways.suggest choices. Following the example of Don Bosco, we have a great need
for
men and women educators opento
somethimg new, ready to innovate, experiment, to take the risk of being per- sonally genuine witnesses in the lives of the young. We are being askedto
approachthem individually,
spontaneously, showing genuine interestin
"the things theylike" without
presuming to invadetheir
personal space.A form
of accompanimentthat
is based preferably on a positive and affectionate respectfor
theother
person, and onethat
shouldtake the form of
arole of
"faciltating",
"appreciating" and "guiding". When wetalk
about undertaking "processses of education to thefaith"
these consistnot
so muchin bringing into
young peoples' Iives somethingfrom the
outside, asin helping them to throw light
ontheir
deepestinner
selveswhere
Goddwells, and to
develop the potential and the capabilitiesthat
they havewithin
themselves.It
is a matter of accompanying them intheir
lives, helping them to discovertheir
deepest inneridentity
andtheir

saythat it is the young,
boysand girls and especially
thepoorest and
those rnostin need who will saue

emergefrom our

routine, from our apathy and from our fears. Often we are more concerned
with maintaining our
own securitiesthan
openingour
hearts,our
ears andour
mindsto what the Spirit
may be asking of us.For
their
sake andin their
presence we cannot escape the urgent demandsthat
from the youth situationitself
are knock- ing on our door. We collaborate through our manifold works and servicesin
promoting welcoming the young,listening to their
silent cries: young people alone, victims of violence,with family
squabbles,
with
emotional wounds, confused,with
suffering and sorrow. The Good News urges us to listen to and to acceptwith-
out pre-conditionstheir
needs, desires, fears and dreams. Like- wiseit
urges usto help them
regaintheir ability to
keep on searching,their indignation in the
faceof opportunities that
being closed to them are empty promises: to encourage them to dream, to promote action, to collaborate, to seek a better society.To accept "God's embrace" as a
gift,
Iearning to weepwith Him
and to smile
with

Don Bosco. Naturally, there was afirst

want to offer abrief
historical survey.tuWe can begin by sayrng that
in
1915 there was ruot one Cente-nary but
two,both
very "Salesian": thebirth
of Don Bosco andthe
decisionto
make 24May the
datefor the
celebrationin
honour of Mary the Help of Christians. This was done by a decree of Pope PiusVII, in
orderto
give thanksto
theMother
of God" NorE: The information which I have greatly summarised was kindly given to me by Fr Jesfs Graciliano Garcia, who had prepared for the Spanish Salesian Bulletin eleven short articles,one for each month,based on the history of the first Centenary.

to Rome.The idea of celebrating the
first
centenary of thebirth
of Don Boscoin
a solemn manner emerged well before the actual date.Fr
PaoloAlbera wanted to give the celebration a twofold
character:that it might
serveto
extend devotion to Mary Helpof Christians
and also knowledgeof
Don Bosco andhis work with
the intention also of speeding up the Cause of Beatification.By 1914 the planning of the celebrations for the
first

advanced. The press had made knownto the public at
largethe main
eventsthat
were to take place onthis
occasion and the authorities who would be taking part. A selection of plans for the constructionof
the monument and of the new church had been made. The Holy See had approved a changein the
dateofthe
General Chapter andthe resignation of the
membersof the Superior
Chapter fromtheir
respectve responsibiities by a year. Cardinal Gasparri, asthe Cardinal Protector of the
Salesian Congregation, hadwritten
aletter in
the name of the Pope.However, subsequent events proved very adverse.
In
1914 and 1915 a series oftragic events took place: a very strong earthquakewhich struck
apart of
Sicily causing seriousmaterial
damage although fortunately without any loss of life among the SDB andFMA; a fire that
completely destroyedthe Chilean
housein
Valdivia; the death of Pius X, who was very close to the Salesians.Another
earthquakeat the beginning of
1915 devastated the .Lbrrazzi region, causingthe
death ofthree
Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and two Salesians were lostin
the ruins.The most tragic, sorrowful and prolonged event was the out- break of the
First
World War which divided theworld into
twowaring
factions, leavingmillions of
deadin its
wake.Italy
atfirst neutral
entered the war on 2 May 1915just
on thevigil of
the proposed celebrations for the centenary of the feast of Mary Help of Christians.THE RECTOR MAJOR 17
The
war
had a seriousimpact
on Salesianworks in
many countries.About
2000 young Salesians were calledto
arms on one side or the other from the nations at war. The war prevent- edor
made verydifficult
contact and communicationwith
the Salesian houses ofthe FMA
and the SDB. To a large extentit
also reduced the help from the Cooperators. Don Albera contin- ued
to call for
prayer,urging
aboveall the
commemorationof
the24th
of eachmonth
dedicatedto Mary Help of
Christians.Clearly in these
circumstancesthe glittering
programmesplanned for the centenary would be either cancelled, reduced or postponed
until
a more appropriate time.It
was decided to post- pone external festivities,limit
the programmes and give them a more religious and private character, alwayswith
the hopethat
peace would soon
arrive
andthe
obstacles removed.But
peace was slowerto arrive than
had been hopedand many of the
planned celebrations would never took place.Nevertheless and
in
spite of the factthat
the day before the feast on the 23 May, as already mentionedItaly
declared war onAustria,
andjoined the allies, on
24in
a crowdedBasilica
a Solemn Pontifical Mass was celebrated at which the Cardinalof Turin
presided.There were also celebrations in Valsalice and Castel- nuovo.
Forthe
conclusion ofthe
centenary,the
Rector Majorinvited all the friends of
Don Boscoto
atwo-part
pilgrimage:the first on
15 Augustto visit the
tomb of Don Bosco and the secondon
16to visit the
places whereit
hadall
begunat
the Becchi, where Don Bosco wasborn
andat
Castelnuovo, where he was baptised.At
Valsalicethe
crowd wasso
greatthat
analtar
had to be set upin
the portico infront
of the tomb. Thou- sands of people assembled, occupying the whole courtyard and the spaces nearby. Hymns, prayers and gifts were offeredprior
to
Benediction atwhich
Don Albera presidedfrom
the terracein front
of the tomb of Don Bosco. Everyone present was given a attractive mementowith
Don Bosco'spicture

On the
second day,the
16August,
gatheredaround
Don Bosco's house at the Becchi were numerous groups of young and old, ecclesiastics and lay people who had comefrom Turin
and the neighbourng countryside. Waiting for them were Don Albera andall the
Superior Chapter. Don Albera celebrated Mass andthen there
wasthe laying of the foudation
stoneof the
new churchthat
wasto
bebuilt there in honour of Mary Help of Christians to mark the
double Centenary.At
Castelnuovo a commemorative plaque was unveiled followed by a festive lunch, and then the official ceremony to mark the occasion. Don Albera was declared an "honorary citizen."In

where Salesian work was established huge events were celebratedin

God,
but through the
human mediation ofhis family

a specialway of his

In May
1887 Don Bosco wentto
Rome-
andit
wasfor
thelast time - for the
consacrationof the Church of the
Sacred Heart the perpetual monument to his love for the Pope. He was almostat the
end of a long laboriouslife, to the
shorteningof which the construction of that church had contributed.

a variety of languages. Someone asked out of curiosity what was the language that Don Bosco liked best. Smiling he replied: "The language
I like

as easily as other languages!"".Don Bosco always acknowledged
the great
valuesthat
he had acquiredin his family: the
peasant's wisdom, ahealthy
astuteness, a.spirit of work,

readinessto work hard
when something needed to be done, optimism under alltrials,
resiliencein
times of misfor-tune, the ability to start
againafter
set-backs, cheerfulness alwaysand
everywhere,a spirit of solidarity, a lively faith,
genuine and deep affection, a readinessto
welcome andto
be hospitable;all
virtuesthat
he had foundat
home andthat
had formed him. He was so marked by these experiencesthat
when hethought
about settingup
an educational establishmentfor
his boys he did not want any other name for

than "house" and he described thespirit that it
ought to have as a "farnilyspirit".
In
order to giveit this
proper tone he asked Mamma Margaret, already elderly and tired to leave thetranquillity
of her homein

the boys he had taken from the streets,ihor"
boys who would cause her nolittle
heartache and grief. But she went to help Don Bosco andto
become the Mammato
those who no longer hadfamily
or affection.It
was precisely the presence of Mamma Margaret at Valdoc- coduring the last ten
yearsof her life that

influencein
no small way onthat "family spirit" that

consider as being at the heart of the Salesian charism.In

Don Bosco had invited his Mother.In

a charismjust

wasvery
consciousof
this being her "new vocation." She acceptedit with humility
and a clear mind. This explains the courage she showedin
the mostdifficult
circumstances. One need onlythink
of the cholera epi- demic: of the actions and the wordsthat
were almost prophetic, such as usingthe altar
clothsto
make bandagesfor the
sick.Especially signficant is the example of the famous "Good
Night"
something peculiarly a
part
of Salesiantradition. It
was some-thing to which
Don Bosco attached great importance and was begunin fact by
MammaMargaret with a little
sermonette givento the first
young boarder." Don Bosco wasto

of a sermon,but in
