INTRODUCTION

The reorganization of the fossil material stored in the Palaeontological Museum of “La Sapienza” University of Rome, has required a considerable effort and still will require for much time. Such a work is not simple and time consuming because it is always necessary to verify the correspondence between the specimen and its label.

Besides, sometimes this work is a very exacting test, because a specimen can be difficult to recognize due, for example, to historical events (during the Second World War, a bomb shot this museum: many labels and many fossils were destroyed or damaged), to environmental factors (in 1870, the museum depository was flooded by the Tiber river: many labels were destroyed or dam- aged), to accidental factors (breakage, mineralogical deterioration, etc.) or to study factors (cut, polishing, ori- ented section etc.). For example, the specimens of Sauvagesia sanfilippoi Parona, 1933 (MPUR: i.123- 125), showed by Parona as an entire piece, were cut and separated one from one other probably by Parona him- self. The main difficulty was to understand that each specimen in reality pertained to the single piece shown by Parona (1933: Pl. 1, Fig. 1). In other cases, the spec- imens have been figured incorrectly. For example the specimen of Ranina propinqua Ristori, 1891 was figured as a mirror image.

Finally, it is very important to verify whether a speci- men was studied and/or figured.

This work represents a first contribution towards an inventory of the types, which are all refigured here. For each type the main data are given. Subsequent designa- tions are not reported.

SHORT HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM

When Pope Pio IX (1864) instituted the chair of Geology, a Museum of Geology and Palaeontology of Rome “La Sapienza” University was founded. The first fossil collections of this Museum mainly came from Central Italy, especially from Pliocene - Pleistocene sed-

iments cropping out near Rome (molluscs, echinoderms and mammals) and from Mesozoic sediments (in partic- ular ammonites and rudists).

Over the years, collections stored in museum were greatly enlarged with specimens from Italy and abroad.

In 1928, as a consequence of the institution of the chair of Palaeontology, the Palaeontological Museum was founded.

Among the type-bearing collections, very important is the Sanfilippo collection. Ignazio Sanfilippo, a mining engineer, worked in the years 1929-1931 for the Italian Royal Government to search phosphates in Tripolitania (Libya). During his field trips he collected many fossils from Maastrichtian sediments of the lower Sofeggin val- ley that he donated the museum. Subsequently, several researchers studied this material: Checchia-Rispoli, Maccagno, Maxia, Serra, Sorrentino and Parona.

THE CATALOGUE ORGANISATION

This catalogue is taxonomically organised: within each mayor grouping, the taxa are listed by alphabetic order.

For each type there are eight records:

Record 1 - genus and species name, followed by the name of author(s) and year of institution of the species;

Record 2 - inventory number of MPUR (Museo Paleontologia Università Roma). The inventory numbers are prefixed i. (invertebrate), ve. (vertebrate) and vg.

(vegetable);

Record 3 - name of the collection;

Record 4 - kind of type: holotype or syntype or lecto- type;

Record 5 - stratigraphic distribution

Record 6 - geographic distribution (country, region, locality). For Italian localities the initials of the province name are put between brackets, after the type locality name;

Record 7 - original bibliographic reference, with the number of the illustration of the type specimen;

Record 8 - remarks.

The types

All the specimens utilized for describing a new species are named types. In particular the holotype is the speci- men, chosen by the author, to represent a new species.

The remaining specimens of that new species are identi- fied as paratypes. The ICZN (International Code of

Zoological Nomenclature) regulates the type nomencla- ture (1999).

If the holotype was not designed, all the specimens examined to describe a new species are syntypes.

Among the syntypes, a later author may choose a lecto- type. In this case the remaining syntypes are named paralectotypes.
