ABSTRACT TESI ANTONIO ARDITO – LA GRAMMATICA DEGLI DÈI. PROPOSTE DI MODELLI INTERPRETATIVI DELLA RAPPRESENTAZIONE LINGUISTICA DEGLI DÈI A ROMA
La tesi ha l’obiettivo di indagare le particolari configurazioni che le nomenclature divine assumono nei calendari epigrafici di Roma antica.
Nella prima parte è stata esaminata la centralità che il nome del dio assume nelle pratiche cultuali e nelle riflessioni teologiche degli eruditi romani, nonché constatata la difficoltà di una catalogazione sistematica degli dèi sulla base dei loro nomi.
In seguito, dopo aver posto l'accento sulla natura squisitamente linguistica della rappresentazione divina veicolata dal nome, focalizzando l’attenzione sul dio come parola, e poi sulla impossibilità di distinguere nettamente il “teonimo” dal corredo di parole che lo accompagnano, ho individuato, elencato e analizzato le centinaia di nomenclature divine presenti nei calendari epigrafici romani.
L’analisi ha rivelato la ricorrenza di “sequenze onomastiche” dal preciso carattere topografico (nome/i del dio + collocazione del tempio). Tali sequenze da un lato riflettono la concezione tipicamente romana degli dèi come “concittadini”; parallelamente tuttavia esse sembrano manifestare la precisa strategia cognitiva adottata dalla cultura romana di legare costantemente al nome del dio il luogo (=tempio) ad esso dedicato, al fine di fornire un concreto “referente biologico”
all’entità concettuale e non-naturale rappresentata dalla divinità.
ABSTRACT THESIS BY ANTONIO ARDITO – THE GRAMMAR OF GODS. PROPOSALS OF INTERPRETATION OF THE LINGUISTIC REPRESENTATION OF ROMAN GODS
The main aim of my thesis is to investigate the particular configurations that divine names assume into the stone calendars of ancient Rome.
In the first part I have investigated the central role that divine names play in ancient cults and Roman theological thinking. Therefore I have noted the difficulty of classyfing sistematically Roman gods basing exclusively on their names.
Finally, after noticing the merely linguistic nature of the divine representation that is carried by the name, focusing on gods seen as words, and after examining the strong connection that lies between divine first names and their “epithets”, I have identified, listed and examined the hundreds of divine names occurring in Roman stone calendars.
The analysis has revealed a strong recurring of topographical “onomastic sequences” (name/s + temple’s location). These sequences, on one hand, reflect the Roman notion of gods like citizens;
on the other, however, they show a precise cognitive strategy adopted by Roman culture: by creating a connection between a intangible god and the place (=temple) where he/she is adored, it is possible to conceptualize a nonnatural entity such a deity.
