Education objectives To complete the student skills in the field of ship hydrostatics and stability with a special attention to the influence of safety rules on the design process and on the ship final characteristics, with focus on passenger ships.
Learning outcomes Safety as a constraint/target in the design of units having passengers as a payload; the linear roll motion of ship; Inclining moments; The Intact Stability Code 2008; Lightship weigh estimation; Inclining experiment;
Methodologies for the ship’s equilibrium and stability in damaged conditions; SOLAS Convention; Allowable length curve;
Probabilistic methodology for safety subdivision (SOLAS 2009); Grounding;
Stability of fully immersed bodies.

Organization and examinations The educational activities are divided into about 48 hours of theoretical classes and 12 hours of practical applications.
Students are allowed to the oral test (two questions about the topics developed in classroom) after presentation and discussion of two written reports about practical applications on the intact and the damaged ship.
