Keynote Presentation

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 | 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM

Marcus Engel, MS, CSP, CPXP

The Other End of the Ultrasound

Marcus Engel is a Certified Speaking Professional and author whose

messages provide insight and strategies for excellent patient care.

His keynote presentation, “The Other End of the Stethoscope” has

been witnessed by tens of thousands of healthcare professionals and

his books are used in scores of nursing and allied health programs to

teach the basic foundations of caregiving.

As a college freshman, Marcus Engel was blinded and nearly killed

after being struck by a drunk driver. Through two years of rehab, over

350 hours of reconstructive facial surgery and adaptation through a

multitude of life changes, Marcus witnessed the good, the bad and the

profound in patient care.

He has authored four books and is at work on a fifth, Beyond Patient

Experience, which is due out shortly.

He is the creator of NarrativeNursing.com, a site designed to help lead nurses into using proven

techniques and therapeutic resources for dealing with the effects of compassion fatigue and burnout.

In 2010, “The Drop,” a short film based on Marcus’ memoir, was released and can be viewed for free at

www.TheDropMovie.com.

Marcus and his wife, Marvelyne, are the co-founders of the I’m Here Movement, a 501(c)3, which is

changing the culture of care with two simple words. Marcus holds a B.S. in sociology from Missouri

State University (2000) and a M.S. in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University in New York City

(2012.) He lives in Orlando, Florida with Marvelyne and his Seeing Eye dog, Elliott. All information on

connecting can be discovered at

www.MarcusEngel.com

Marcus’ books:

“After This…An Inspirational Journey For All The Wrong Reasons” “The Other End of the Stethoscope: 33 Insights for Excellent Patient Care” “I’m Here: Compassionate Communication in Patient Care”

“Everyday Inspiration”

“Beyond Patient Experience” (due out very soon!)

Amy Bardin-Spencer, MS, RRT, VA-BC™ The vascular access procedure lab is a hands on opportunity to review, insert and discuss invasive procedures on cadaveric specimens. Each attendee will rotate through a set of dynamic stations to increase procedural confidence and awareness. These stations allow clinicians to performs the following: RaCeVA ultrasound assessment, insertion of acute and long term central venous catheters, perform tunneling techniques for both peripheral and acute catheters, insertion and manage of interosseous access followed by an anatomic cadaveric review of vascular pathways. Pediatric Workshop—Neonatal

and Pediatric Ultrasound Guided

PICC Insertion Class

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

(Lunch and reception included)

CONTACT HOURS: 9

The Neonatal and Pediatric Ultrasound Guided PICC Insertion Class has been designed specifically for clinicians with excellent PIV insertion skills wanting to venture further into the art of PICC placements within the dynamic realm of neonates and pediatrics. The clinicians will be given the optimal opportunity to develop new skills by: utilizing the Modified Seldinger Technique (MST), traditional PICC insertion technique, and optimizing vessel visualization by integrating ultrasonic guidance.

This class is highly energetic and interactive! Attendees will be placed in groups with a designated instructor and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate skills and receive personalized feedback within the following categories: vasculature assessment, insertion techniques and complete procedural sterile setup. There will be a review of indications, troubleshooting, and possible complications that can arise during ultrasound-guided PICC insertions. The goals of this class are geared towards increasing the clinician’s procedural technique, self-awareness, skills, and self-confidence. All registered attendees will be required to review the provided didactic materials prior to attending the class and complete the online test that will be provided after registration has been completed. A review is highly encouraged as this will make the class experience more beneficial for all attendees.

This hands-on workshop will focus on health-care providers who wish to protect: patients from injury, themselves from the loss of professional status/licensure, and their employers from the devastating effects of malpractice suits. During this casual and interactive seminar, participants will learn the steps in the litigation process, have common legal terms defined, examine the reasons health-care providers are implicated in vascular access malpractice claims and recognize valuable habits to employ in their daily clinical practice to avoid litigation. Actual case related examples will be integrated into the program to illustrate the major points of discussion. Audience participation will be facilitated by engaging in creative learning activities which include authentic case analyses, video examination review, open forum questions and shared personal experiences. In light of the increasing potential for litigation in today’s medicolegal climate, attendees will benefit from this workshop by acknowledging and examining our litigation process and following the suggested recommendations to prevent a medical malpractice claim.

Intravascular ECG-Guidance for

CVAD Tip Confirmation: Basic &

Advanced Concepts for Accurate

Assessment and Interpretation

1:30 PM – 5:30 PM

CONTACT HOURS: 4.8

Jamie B. Santolucito, RN, CRNI, VA-BC Sean Lau, MBA, BSN, RN, VA-BC Real-time, intravascular ECG-guidance technology has shown to be more accurate, time efficient and cost-effective compared to conventional chest radiography in confirming CVAD tip position. Moreover, intravascular ECG-guidance dramatically reduces the need for repositioning catheters post-insertion, potentially reducing

contamination and CLABSI rates. Part One of this workshop will address fundamentals of intravascular ECG-guidance technology, supporting evidence and recommendations, indications and limitations. Clinical outcomes data describing the impact of intravascular ECG-guidance technology in improving patient outcomes and reducing procedural time and costs will be presented. Numerous intravascular ECG waveforms will be assessed and analyzed, demonstrating obvious, less obvious and challenging waveforms requiring advanced skill and knowledge. Finally, critical troubleshooting techniques and assessment skills designed to optimize waveform presentation and enhance accurate analysis and interpretation will be presented and discussed.

Part Two of the workshop will include an interactive, unbiased practicum in which simulated insertions of various intravascular ECG-guidance systems will be demonstrated by clinical experts. Participants will have the opportunity to observe and discuss the unique features of each system, including integrated navigation technology and valuable tips for optimizing skill and accuracy in analysis and interpretation.

Radiographic Assessment

of CVADs

8:00 AM – 12:00 PM CONTACT HOURS: 4.8 Mary Costantino, MD

Jamie Santolucito, RN, CRNI, VA-BC™ Despite recent advancements in the use of intravascular ECG-guidance as a reliable method to confirm CVAD tip position, basic knowledge and understanding of vascular anatomy as defined by the chest radiograph remains crucial to the specialty practice of vascular access.

This session will address basic fundamentals of chest radiography including radiographic densities, exposure, patient position and rotation, degree of inspiration and search pattern. Contrast-enhanced digital imaging with direct correlation to the frontal chest radiograph will be used to accurately identify relevant structures such as the right and left mediastinal borders, including the right atrial appendage and cavoatrial junction, as well as arterial anatomy and aberrant vasculature. Osseous and airway structures will be defined radiographically as an alternative method to determine optimal CVAD tip location when vascular landmarks are obscured. Numerous cases will be presented and discussed demonstrating optimal, suboptimal and malpositioned CVADs.
