Ash Wednesday and Good Friday

Obligatory days of fast and abstinence for Catholics.

Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. For Catho- lics, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Fasting means one full meal and two smaller meals that are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence means refraining from meat and is binding for Catholics from age 14 and up. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) honoring the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully in the celebration of his Resurrection.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed three times each Friday during Lent.

12:10PM and 7:00PM at Blessed Sacrament, with the evening one in Spanish.

7:00PM March 11th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

A Simple Lunch will be served at Blessed Sacrament fol- lowing the 12:10 Stations on March 11.

The Knights of Columbus are planning a Fish Fry before the March 18th Stations at St. Rita.

A Dessert Social will be served following the March 25 Sta- tions at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Simple Suppers will be served before the Stations on April 1 at St. Rita and April 8 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Dear Friends,

Fifty-seven years ago our patron—St. Paul VI spoke to the UN General Assembly. The masterful speech was a call not to arms but to peace. His words ring true over the more than half century. We live in a world of war. The

Ukraine situation affects us; just as the various wars and incursions over the years affect us. Pope Paul was speaking twenty years after World War II, he was speaking in the midst of the Cold War and to a world fearful of nuclear an- nihilation.

Pope Paul said in New York on that October day:

As you know very well, peace is not built merely by means of politics and a balance of power and interests. It is built with the mind, with ideas, with the works of peace. You are working at this great endeavor, but you are only at the beginning of your labors. Will the world ever come to change the selfish and bellicose outlook that has spun out such a great part of its history up to now? It is hard to foresee the future, but easy to assert that the world has to set out resolutely on the path toward a new history, a peaceful history, one that will be truly and fully human, the one that God promised to men of good will. The pathways are marked out before you and the first one is disarmament.

If you want to be brothers, let the arms fall from your hands. A person cannot love with offensive weapons in his hands. Arms, and especially the terrible arms that modern science has provided you, engender bad dreams, feed evil sentiments, create nightmares, hostilities, and dark resolutions even before they cause any victims and ruins. They call for enormous expenses. They interrupt projects of solidarity and of useful labor. They warp the outlook of na- tions. So long as man remains the weak, changeable, and even wicked being that he so often shows himself to be, defensive arms will, alas, be necessary. But your courage and good qualities urge you on to a study of means that can guarantee the security of international life without any recourse to arms.

…Listen to the clear words of a great man who is no longer with us, John Kennedy, who proclaimed four years ago:

"Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind." There is no need for a long talk to proclaim the main purpose of your Institution. It is enough to recall that the blood of millions, countless unheard-of sufferings, useless massacres and frightening ruins have sanctioned the agreement that unites you with an oath that ought to change the future history of the world: never again war, never again war! It is peace, peace, that has to guide the destiny of the nations of all mankind! (excerpts from St. Paul VI address to the United Nations, October 4, 1965) Our own shepherd, Archbishop Blair, wrote to us this past Sunday:

Now we can only pray for the Ukrainian people, especially those very much in harm’s way, not only mili- tarily but personally, in the face of a brutal regime that stifles

all opposition and demonizes its enemies. (Archbishop Leonard Blair).

Let us pray for peace, let us be peacemakers in own homes and lives.

Thank you for all you do for our parish. Father Tiano

THE PILLARS OF LENT

As we begin our Lenten journey, reflect on how your pray- ers, fasting and almsgiving can guide you. As Pope Francis explains, these are “elements which, when lived sincerely, can transform life and provide a sure foundation for digni- ty and fraternity.” How can practicing the Lenten pillars transform your life and the lives of our sisters and brothers around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.
