Theorem. Fix c ∈ f (D). Then

is a ‘smooth’ surface. Moreover if P = (x0, y0, z0) ∈ S then the vector (∇F )(x0, y0, z0) is orthogonal to S at P .

Examples. If F (x, y, z) = x2 + 4y2 + 16z2 and c = 16 then S is an ellipsoid. If F (x, y, z) = x3y2 and c = 0 then S has contains the z-axis (x = 0 = y ) as a sharp edge.

Suppose that γ(t) is a straight line such that P0 = γ(0) = (x0, y0, z0) ∈ S, and consider the values

F (t) = (F ◦ γ)(t) = F (x0+tA, y0+tB, z0 +tC)

of F along this line. The line is tangent to S if and only if F0(0) = (∇F ) · (A, B, C) is zero. These tangent lines generate the tangent plane

a(x − x0) + b(y − y0) + c(z − x0) = 0 to S at P0 whose normal vector

n = (a, b, c) = (Fx(P0), Fy(P0), Fz(P0))

can therefore be taken to be the gradient computed at P0.

Suppose that f : R2D → R. The graph of f is the surface z = f (x, y). If we set

F (x, y, z) = f (x, y) − z, it is the ‘level surface’ F (x, y, z) = 0, and

points upwards, everywhere orthogonal to the graph. (In the picture, the red arrow represents −∇F computed at a point P0 = (x0, y0, z0) on the graph.)

Fix (x0, y0) and set a = fx(x0, y0) and b = fy(x0, y0). The tangent plane to the graph at (x0, y0) has equation

a(x − x0) + b(y − y0) − (z − z0) = 0,

where z0 = f (x0, y0). This plane (in green) approximates the graph of f at P0 and is itself the graph

z = z0 +a(x − x0) + b(y − y0)

of a simpler function (a linear mapping plus a constant).
