Exercise 1: 

Shutdown of the 

C3‐C4 separation unit 

You should propose, critically discuss, and analyze the shutdown strategy for the C3‐C4 separation  section. 

 

To compare the shutdown procedures, you are advised to consider: 

 The amount of product out of specification; 

 The energy consumption during the out of specification period; 

 The shutdown time. 

 

Assumptions 

Initially,  the  distillation  column  is  working  in  stationary  conditions  and  in  absence  of  external  disturbances.
