Abstract

The object of this thesis is the structural analysis of an A-Class racing catamaran hull.

This type of boat is achieving great success since the A-Class regulations impose only few restrictions in its design.

The first step of the work has referred to the definition and analysis of the maximum loads the catamaran is subjected to, during the most common racing configurations.

Particularly the fluid dynamic and inertial forces, which induce rolling, pitching and yawning momentums, have been investigated and balanced.

The second step has consisted in the development of a finite element model to carry on a structural analysis in order to obtain the stresses magnitude and point out the most critical parts of the hull. This has been done using the Nastran solution for the unconstrained structures.

Finally, after imposing a failure index safety threshold, the hull structure, made of carbon fiber layers and a Nomex honeycomb core, has been reinforced.

Once the optimal layers thickness has been found, it has been necessary to check that the structure’s new balance and the consequent stresses, caused by the hull weight enhancement, met the failure index requirements previously imposed.
