10:00-11:30 Session I – The Rising Orders of the Middle East

The Middle East has gone through drastic changes since 2011. There are many ongoing and unsettled disputes, crises and challenges which have deeply affected not only the people and countries of the region but also the neighboring areas, including but not limited to Europe, and the world politics at large. Rivalries among regional and extra-regional players have made the Middle East a main chessboard for power politics. This session will look into the rising trends in the region, will try to unfold possible regional orders and will discuss positions of major stakeholders in this framework.

This session will look into the security challenges and conflict dynamics in the Middle East region with particular regard to three major issues: the latest developments in the ongoing conflicts and their regional reverberations; the future of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPCOA) and the prospect for regional arms control, including the EU-sponsored proposal for a Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction (WMD) Free Zone in the Middle East; the changing political alignments and the role played by external powers. The panel and the subsequent debate will aim to explore the concrete possibilities of new forms of international cooperation involving Iran that can contribute to lessening the tensions between rival actors and paving the way for a concerted management of conflict situations.
