ABSTRACT

Keywords: ROMs, antioxidants, canine tumours, d-ROMs test, BAP test. Oxidative stress arising due to overproduction of reactive oxygen species, cuopled with alterated antioxidant capacities has been implicated in the pathogenesis of all types of cancer. The aim of the present study was to compare the redox properties of the blood plasma of dogs with tumours and a control group of healty dogs and, in case, to find out whether there is a correlation between oxidative status and clinical condition of patient.Oxidant-antioxidant profile in 58 dogs affected by different type of neoplasia was estimated using d-ROMs test and BAP test, two colorimetric determination of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) and antioxidant components in blood plasma. We found that free radicals arise significantly in subjects with tumor and their concentration can be correlated with anorexia/cachexia syndrome wich is one of the most important features of advanced cancer.
