The translation of Greek texts in Latin and vernacular, and of Latin texts in vernacular, is one of the

phenomena that characterizes the culture of the Renaissance, setting it in a different perspective from that of medieval translations. In fact, the translation and amplification of tragedies is at the base of the Humanist « renaissance ». The first translators of Greek tragedies (Lazare de Baïf, Calvy de La Fontaine, Jacques Amyot, Guillaume Bochetel, Thomas Sébillet) set out to offer an aid to the reading of the original, which they retained obscure. Such obscuritas forced these translators to resort to intermediaries (be they Latin or

vernacular translations). In this essay we study one of the sources of Calvy de La Fontaine who, in his mise en

vers françois of Sophocles’ Antigone (1542) used a translation in vulgar Italian by Luigi Alamanni. A collatio

between Calvy’s text and Sophocles’ with that of Alamanni demontrates this hypothesis.
