Mission

Our Graduation thesis is based on the mission and requirements of the 2017 "Natian Cup" Sustainable Design International Competition Mission Book (http://natiancompetition.uedmagazine.net/). The background of this competition is as follows.

The urban landscape in the context of today's age is largely dependent on the creation and regeneration of urban public space, and the public space is a reflection of the city's good life. The characteristics of urban space come from the infrastructure, sculpture, architecture, land, plants and the essence of all local culture. Comfortable and pleasant urban ecological environment, interesting city public space, has undoubtedly become the driving force of urban development.

The first "Natian Cup" Sustainable Design International Competition is hosted by the Suqian Municipal People's Government, and is hosted by Suqian City Planning Bureau, CBC (China Building Center) and" Urban Environment Design "(UED) magazine. The competition will focus on the culture, function and representative characteristics of public space in the port of Luoma Lake to Santaishan Forest Park (including Natian Flower Sea). The designers, artists and teachers and students in the direction of urban planning, architectural design, landscape design and art design will design in the direction of urban landmarks, sculptures, earth art, architecture and art installations. Participants need to consider and echo the design of the city area of the development of the status quo, site and design topics optional, the design needs to be rationalized to consider the implementation. After the judges' resolution, the winning entries will have the opportunity to actually build according to the local government's resolution.

(4)

The competition will use the axis from Luoma Lake to the Santaishan Forest Park (including the Natian Flower Sea) of Suqian city as the carrier, the design area is within the landscape of the green corridor and the fields of the flower sea. This design is a re-thinking from the ecological point of view and a good opportunity to look at the future of the city in a sustainable way.

Like any Chinese cities, the new era of Suqian is also facing new development problems such as urban renewal, natural landscape protection and sustainable development. The design area is situated in Suqian City's unique natural landscape, with its bright colors and biodiversity all year round to highlight the beauty of nature. The conpetition encourages participants to think about how to extend the nature to the city, so that the city will adopt the cycle of natural growth, which will be of great help to urban development, and will play a role model for other cities in China.

Organizer: Suqian Municipal People 's Government Sponsor: Suqian City Planning Bureau

CBC (China Building Center)

"Urban Environment Design" (UED) magazine

1) Creative: Create for Suqian citizens and foreign tourists a diversified, interesting space. The design must be original for the contestants.

2) Regional: The design should be combined with Suqian's local history of humanities and the natural environment.

3) Sustainability: Design needs to consider the design, selection, operation and other aspects of sustainability.

4) Implementable: the design will not just stay in the conceptual level. The choice of materials, the form of construction, process requirements should be enforceable.

5) The design should help to strengthen the local characteristics, to add new features and design quality for the public space.

Designers are diverse, so and the contestants are free to play with architecture, landscape, sculpture, installation, etc., such as watchtower, sculpture, visitor center, tea room, cafe, pavilion, restaurant, gallery and artwork. The project should be creative, based on local history and cultural conditions, and should create a new city image.

Introduction of Suqian city

Suqian is located in north Jiangsu Province, with an urban area of 8,555 sq.km., a population of 5,800,000, and three counties and seven districts under its jurisdiction. As the crossroad of the Huaihai Economic Belt, the Coastal Economic Belt and the Riverside Economic Belt, Suqian enjoys prominent economic location that makes the city rank among the Top 100 Economic Powers of China. Known as the hometown of Xiang Yu (232 BC – 202 BC), the Great Conqueror of the Western Chu Dynasty, Suqian is a dynamic historical city. Thanks to its attractive natural landscape, it has been reputed for the vast lakes and dream-like farm fields and acclaimed as a pure land in east China and the largest oxygen bar in the regions of the Yellow River, Huaihe River and Haihe River.

The Canal City

The Garden City

As famous as the Great Wall, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, with a total length of 1794 kilometers, goes through Xuzhou City, and runs from north to south into Suqian City. The canal, running from northwest to southeast, like a bow, meandering. In the "bow" back, there is a beautiful landscape, which is the ancient canal Suqian urban scenery belt. Ancient Canal City scenery belt, located in the center of Suqian urban area, was down "L" shaped embracing the downtown area. North from the Three Gate Park, south to the canal on the Third Bridge, the total length of which is about 8 km. The scenery belt has a width of 200-300 meters (some parts are 30 meters wide) from west to east, with a total area of 252.14 hectares.

Suqian is famous for the Great Canal which goes through the city and with a histroy of three hundred years. The great canal is the artery of the area's development in the ancient times. Its power is driven by water, forming a continuous water boulervard for goods and huamn resources to be transported to other important economic centers like Beijing and Shanghai. Its large scale and great function have been famous throughout the world. We use this concept to remind people of the glorious history of this canal and its base-- Suqian city, so as to be as a name card of the city and making its own unique city culture.

Suqian is situated in a unique landscape culture which is famous for the traditional " Suzhou" style Chinese garden. The garden is also connected with water and cannot leave the element of water aside. The abundant spatial type and arrangement makes the unique landscape and " Shang shui yi jing ", meaning mountain and water atmosphere. This has become a symbolic style in this area. We learn from the making and designing of the Chinese garden to layout the design.

Suqian has a long history and great cultural prosperity. The ancient names of Suqian are Xiaxiang, Suyu. It is the hometown of the West Chu tyrants Xiang Yu. Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the city, on the north leaning Luoma Lake, on the south Hongze Lake. Since ancient times, there is a saying about Suqian"Looking over Qilu to the North, south to Jianghuai, is the home of two waters (ie, the Yellow River, the Yangtze River) in the middle way, holding the two capitals' (ie Beijing, Nanjing) throat." Qianlong went to Jiangnan six times and stayed five times in this city. He praised Suqian as "the first paradise of Jiangshan's spring time". China's Grand Canal in Suqian section (Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Qianlong palace heritage) was selected on the World Heritage List.

Natian Flower Farm

Suqian City

There are still some agricultural activity traces inside the area of Shanshui Green Corridor, including the water ditches which were used to water the economic crops, and the paths between the farmlands to allow people to walk amongst the crop fields.

Several major city roads are crossing the green corridor. The surroundng lands outside of the green corridor were planned to be of residential and commercial uses mainly, according to the local government's long-term vision.

The site area is located in the north west part of Suqian city, China. It is an area with a distance to the city center and not yet well developed. The west-side green corridor is at the shore of Luoma Lake, and extends all the way to the Santaishan Mountain Forest Park. The east end of the site area is ending at the Natian flower sea, which is a newly designed and built natural and cultural attraction.

The construction status of these areas are: For the Natian Flower Farm, it has been fully built and funtioning well in nowadays, while the Shanshui Green Corridor is still in a design period in which the area is still a farming fields to be changed. And at the west end, the bay area along Luoma lake is still at the stage of being design.

According to the design mission book, the destinated design areas includes the "Shanshui" green corridor on the west and the Natian flower sea on the east. These two sites are well connected with the Luoma lake and the Santaishan Forest Park from east to west, with a distance of 10km to the city center. The "Shanshui" green corridor is a urban design project to be implemented in the future and the Natian Flower sea is a mature tourist attraction nowadays. The "Shanshui corridor" is part of the green axis of the city's planning to introduce nature into the city. The corridor is connecting the north and south part of the city by several major civic roads. The corridor also extends into the Luoma lake, with a long and continuous lake shore area and there are rich natural and visual resources.

(16)

Natian

Flower Sea

The Natian Flower Sea is a big landscape project which features forest leisure experience: agricultural production (farmland + flower field) + tourism and leisure (folk village + flower town).

This scenic area is based on the Santaishan Forest Park in the west of Suqian City. The aim of this area is to create ecological agriculture landscape, forest flower field landscape, boosting both folk culture and leisure, sightseeing, fishing and other leisure function of the forest landscape area. The main functions of this area includes agricultural production, sightseeing and cultural leisure projects. The plants in the area includes various species of flower plants and fruit plants, as well as economic plants such as vanilla, herbs and tea tree.Among the massive area of the fields with flowers and trees, there are well designed, ribbon- shaped pedestrian bridges that can allow people to walk above and across the whole sceneric area, just like walking on the sea of flowers. As comprehensive facilities, farm houses and hotels are built in between the fields to host tourists.

The design of the facilities and buildings are very local and uses local raw materials such as raw stones and dry hay. Site construction layout uses the traditional village's layout as the base, increasing the water system. The overall spatial layout for the combination of water and land makes river street parallel and intersect with each other. Streets and buildings are built by water, with the patchwork showing a unique flavor of the local flavor. Business and accommodation interspersing in different groups can meet the needs of tourists and avoid crowds. The formation of a certain size of the dining street makes it easy to transport goods with vehicles without affecting the tourists and also meets its future unified management at the same time .

Natian Flower Sea has three major functions: display, leisure, exhibiting cultural heritage.

(1) Display function: the flower sea uses Suqian's unique "field" form, merging the north-south terraced fields and the stack land patterns, is a unique regional business card to promote farming culture. This planning displays local products, and its related culture, providing visitors with a rich interest in experiencing the fields.

(2) Leisure and vacational functions: based on a good natural ecological environment, planning ecology, healthy, seasonal products, the planning improves the tourism with a sufficient and efficient supporting services, to create a satisfying leisure resort.

(3)Cultural heritage function: Natian village has a traditional culture and village atmosphere. Using it as a basis to make expansion design for the Natian seneric area, so that the design is full of scences of traditional culture heritage, providing a good gathering space, as well as traditional cultural experience.

Shanshui

Green

Corridor

The design of the green corridor connects the Luoma Lake and the Santaishan Moutain Forest Park, creating a green belt in the city, introducing and infusing the nature into the city. Inside of the corridor, water system are developed from the original farming water system and now forming a new ecological water landscape belt. Another belt of flowering trees surrounds the pedestrian paths which are also the conservation and development of the original farming paths in this area. In the part where the green corridor runs into the Luoma Lake, there is an openning harbor and bay which needs to be further designed.

The green corridor uses the idea of the ancient Chinese "ribbon" which are made of silk and are long and winding to express the delicate Chinese style atomosphere.

1. The central axis uses the name of the Chinese ribbon "pretty Luo towel" to tell a complete story: the extraction of the ribbon is the substraction of the axis of the cherry blossom. In the flowering season it will look like a pink ribbon.

2. The central axis of the avenue continues uninterrupted. The size of the tree species, specifications and spacing of trees must be human-scale.

3.A group of delicate water flows. The surface area of the water is not too large. The water has a deep feeling of meandering.

4. The design of biological systems in order to adopt appropriate introduction of animals, uses special design and arrangements to attract and safely place firflies and birds.

5. The over-street bridges keep cherry blossom avenue uninterrupted. The cherry blossom avenue continues in a dynamic way. The development of the over-street bridges also reserves clearance space for the north -south roads to cross through.
