ABSTRACT

T h e p r o j e c t a i m s t o

transform a very famous

i n d u s t r i a l t r a n s p o r t

hub site in Milan into a

cityscape container that

activates urban and

community life. Through

the different landscape

strategies to achieve the

revival of this industrial

wasteland, to establish a

space carrier for people

and nature, nature and

the city.

Scalo Farini is an area in Municipio 9, which is a zone in Milano, which is a city in Lombardia, which is a region in Italy, which is a state in Europe, which is an association of states in the Earth, which is a planet in the Solar System, which is a region in the edge of the Milky Way, a Galaxy. And now that we arrived this far, lets, go back. If you want numbers, Milano has got 1.372.810 inhabitants, and Municipio 9 has 181.598. They are quite a lot. In the middle of this quite big area there is Scalo Farini (and we are back to the starting point. As the data show (if you want the graphics you can find them in the next chapter), the ages of the inhabitants are mostly between 30 and 44. Most of the houses are owned by he people living there and there is quite a number of foreigners. There are a lot of places where to eat, but it is to be expected, being there a great amount of offices too, but there are very few parks and places where to do sports (all of this last data were collected by going on site and walking).

(6)

You can find the history of the Scalo in a scheme in the next chapter (that, as you’ll see is done as railways, pretty clever, isn’t it?) but, in a nutshell, the area was used for nearly 60 years, even if the precise amount is nowhere to be found, as a rail yard for goods. Now it’s used to stock some packages, by the postal service. Being abandoned for several years, now the Municipality has opened a call to architects so that this and the other rail yard in Milan can be reused.

(9)

Now, lets get in the actual

space. When you enter, a thing

pops up: how big it is. Trust

me, it’s really huge. In the

first part the ground is covered

with pave. Now, for those of

you who are not from Milan,

pave is a typical flooring used

in the city, and it’s made of

porphyry and is excellent if

there is the need to do works

underneath it, and horrible

if you are riding a bicycle, a

scooter or rollers.

(10)

If you put a rock in the way

of a line of ants, they will

divide and walk around

it making their work so

much longer. The area,

being so big is like that

rock for the circulation.

Milan is known to be a city

of moving people, of

non-stop workers, and having

to take a longer route to

go to work, or simply

to pass from one part of

the railway to the other,

can be nerve-wracking.

If we consider how many

people go around it every

day, building traffic jams

it can be nerve-wracking,

not only for the people in

the cars, but also for the

pedestrians. Being able to

connect the two parts of

the city, could help a better

circulation.

For this reason, one of

the aspects of the project

has to be the ability to

connect, being it by foot

or by bike, two realities

that are so close but yet

so far. Allowing people to

feel safe and at ease in a

space dedicated to them.

Two bridges are to be built

on top of the railways,

allowing users to reach

Villa Simonetta, or, on the

other route to arrive from

Sempione to Bovisa in

an easier way (that would

be helpful for me too, to

reach the University).

the main point of our

project is to give people

a p l a c e w h e r e t o b e

themselves, and where

to learn. So now we had

a n o t h e r p r o b l e m , d o

we make separated and

enclosed parts, where

people could gather? Or

do we leave an open space

and merely suggest a way

to use it?

Both ideas have good and

bad sides to them. The

first one allows a better

concentration, so it is

perfect for study rooms

and meeting rooms. But, if

left built up, does not allow

to percept the whole space.

And, worst, it does not

help the sharing between

different people, that has

to be welcomed the best

we can.

The second one is way

more dispersive. It is more

open to wrong reading

by the users. But it surely

allows a better exchange,

not only between the

people of the same age, but

also of different ones, of

different upbringing and

nationalities. And allows to

perceive the structure and

the whole space in a better

way.

(11)

So now, it is time for us to find a concept. Here it works like this. The concept is always pretty hard to find, because it is an idea on which, later on, all the project has to make sense. There are various way as to think of a concept, but this will not be described here. We used our analysis to conceive it.

Having been the place a rail yard, where goods where exchanged, we came up with the idea of exchange. Exchange is “An act of giving one thing and receiving another (especially of the same kind) in return. A short conversation or an argument. A move or short sequence of moves in which both players capture material of comparable value, or particularly the exchange in which one captures a rook in return for a knight or bishop. The act of giving something and receive something of the same kind in return.”, according to the Oxford Dictionary. But we wanted it to be something more. So we thought about what could be exchanged, not necessary on the act of exchanging. Of course, goods, are the first thing that comes to mind, but even thoughts, experiences, ideas, emotions. There are far more things and concepts that are keen to the idea of exchanging, that could ever come to mind in the first place. And probably there are more than the ones we came up with.

What can an exchange make, though, can it change something? Absolutely yes, our Space is a space that welcomes anyone, but favors the ones that are more keen to be wowed, to come in open minded, to accept an idea that is not their own. We would like people to leave the Space with more thoughts, with different ones, having learnt something.

Contemporary landscape is not

only a carrier for faithfully recording

behavioral activities and perceptual

space, but also an accelerator and

leader who actively promotes the

occurrence, development and

improvement of human settlements.

(17)
(18)

The design of the linear landscape is mainly to provide an opportunity and place for the community residents near the venue to generate activities and exchanges, and to activate the community and the city. The design of the entire park takes place at five different levels. In the first part, the layout of traffic flow lines and park entrances and exits is first based on the trend of the venue. In the second part, the pedestrian road and bicycle road are designed according to the traffic flow line. The third part arranges the vegetation area and pavement area in the site according to the division of the plane relationship. The fourth part places the different functional structures in different nodes of the linear park, providing people with a functional place for rest and communication. The fifth part still chooses the vegetation with the characteristics of the color and the season.

(19)

For the nodes inside the site, the method of type research is selected in the design of the

scheme. These six different types of axonograms reflect the landscape conditions presented by

the different linear landscapes and topographical reliefs of the project.

(20)

This part is a design for the possibility of some space for staying and gathering people. In terms of

creating space to attract people to stay, the space is required to have an open area and to be able to

personalize the events that may occur.

4

(21)

This section creates a grey space for people who are active in

linear parks for people to rest outdoors.

4

(22)

Among the large landscape spaces, structures are important places for people to create exchange

events. In this type of design, I designed eight different types of structures that can generate different

types of events. There are small exhibition venues, children's libraries, small coffee bars, and elderly

activity centers to cater for people of all ages and needs.

4

(23)

The site is located in the suburbs of Milan, a huge area, and the former transportation hub has

become unsuitable for the development of the city and the requirements of the community. My

proposed design strategy is to rebuild scario farini into a prototype of Milan's modern urbanization

and use this area to stimulate the potential of public and productive spaces in urban centers. I am

trying to express a gentle gradual transformation and revitalization strategy through time and

multi-level approach. The project is a citizen called on the community to collectively rethink the fate of

the historical city's core, its heritage, its turning point and brilliant future!
