Reflections on Brasil Arquitetura
Giacomo Pirazzoli
A new volume brings together fifteen years of the important São
Paulo-based studio’s achievements. Three essays frame the work
in the Brazilian context
Brasil Arquitetura brings together the 2005-2020 work of the
homonymous São Paulo-based studio led by Francisco Fanucci and
Marcelo Ferraz – a former collaborator of Lina Bo Bardi – and follows on from the previous volume with works up to 2005.
The text – available in both Portuguese and English editions – opens with three essays: Monica Bogea reflects on the numerous works that have to do with memory, among them the museums; Abilio Guerra thinks about rural houses, one of the most delicate topics for Brazilian architecture, given the well-known production in the country of houses for the rich that are often inspired by super-sized modernist styles (like dining tables that are several metres long, which have little what to do with the social commitment to existenzminimum); and Guilherme Wisnik, who writes about the purpose of the architect as a militant of culture, the person who proposes the questions (paradoxically quoting Koolhaas, perhaps the author furthest from Brasil Arquitetura).
The collection of 11 public buildings, 15 museums, memorials and cultural centres, 6 private houses, 1 chapel, 1 factory and 1 urban design project, mostly completed – together with designs for a couple of competitions – renders the idea of the firm’s effort, which continues over time to achieve results of remarkable quality.
