Acitvity Report by the Student Fulvio Arreghini- PhD Program, cycle XXIX
Tutor(s): Prof. Marco Luise, Capt. (Navy) Andrea Manco
1. Research Activity
I attended the three years of Phd course while being in active service as Commander of the Italian Navy. The main track of my PhD, jointly defined by my tutors (Prof. Luise from the University of Pi-sa and Captain Manco from the Italian Navy) was: “study software and hardware architecture for SDR with particular reference to efficient multi-threading applications”. As additional objective, the Italian General Staff of Defence, tasked me to initiate the development of a framework for the development of a governmental policy of Verification and Validation (V&V) of military SDR.
My research activities have been then focused on the Verification and Validation of SDR architec-ture and waveforms, with particular reference to tactical SDRs. I worked mainly in the SDR lab of CSSN ITE (centro Supporto e Sperimentazione Navale-Istituto per le Telecomunicazioni e l’Elettronica) a research and experimentation centre of the Italian Navy in Livorno and at the La-boratory DSP for Communication (DSPCOLA) at the University of Pisa. During 2016 I was assigned to OCCAR-EA (Joint Armament Cooperation Organization) in Bonn, to support as technical special-ist the new phase of the multinational programme ESSOR (European Secure Software Defined Ra-dio) for the development of a new wideband tactical waveform for six Nations.
The 1st year of my PhD was mainly focused on the study of SDR architecture, with particular
refer-ence to the Software Communication Architecture (SCA), as the basis of all the tactical SDR today on the field, and to the ESSOR architecture, an SDR architecture based on SCA, developed within the ESSOR programme.
During the 2nd year of PhD I mainly performed test and experimentation on tactical SDR
proto-types developed by the National Industry. In particular I performed testing on the ESSOR high data rate (HDR) waveform using the Native Test Environment (NTE), a dedicated emulation tool devel-oped within the ESSOR programme and I develdevel-oped a testbed for the testing of heterogeneous tactical networks integrating SDR networks and tactical LTE systems. This testbed was used to support the activities of the NATO SET 196 panel.
During the 3rd year of PhD I initiated the development of some tools to be used for testing of
mili-tary SDR, most of which are described in my thesis: a model of SCA architecture for mechanized verification of the specification’s requirements, a tool for the validation of the SCA architecture implementation, a tool for the automatic testing of different states of a waveform that is now used at CSSN ITE also for the testing of Communication Electronic Sensing Measures (CESM) sys-tems embarked in different Italian Navy warships.

The above listed activities have allowed the development of different prototypes of testing tools, covering the entire development process of an SDR product, from the definition of the specifica-tion, to the verification on the field.
During my detachment to OCCAR I have been deeply involved in the technical analysis of the evo-lution of the ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform (HDRWF) and in the definition of the related verifi-cation process.
Currently I am still working in OCCAR supporting the ESSOR prorgramme. 2. Formation Activity
In my Phd course I followed different course of the achieving a total of 41 credits
