I've taken part of the course Advanced Topics in Electromagnetics, known in the CSU system as ECE 742, where I learnt computational techniques for solving differential and integral equations that govern static, frequency-domain, and time-domain electromagnetic field phenomena for atmospheric radar problems. I developed the first method and part of the fourth approach of the validation chain (proposed in my Thesis), thanks to the support of all the Prof. Chandrasekar team and the possibility to get real data acquired with the CSU-CHILL radar.

TITOLO DELLA TESI / TITLE OF THE PHD THESIS
A Validation Procedure for a NWP-Based Radar Signal SimulatorPROGETTO DI RICERCA/RESEARCH PROJECT (descrivere sinteticamente / please provide a short
description)
My PhD program has been focused on the creation of a validation procedure for any Numerical Weather Prediction-based radar signal simulator. A simulator of weather radar signals can be exploited as useful reference for many applications, such as weather forecasting and now-casting models or training for aircraft trajectory optimization to reduce flight hazard. However, before being used, it must be examined in different extreme conditions, in order to evaluate the consistency of the outputs produced. In my Thesis, a novel validation procedure is presented. The goal of this work is to provide reliable references and
objective thresholds to assess the simulator tasks without using qualitative methods, usually implied for this scope. To create a multi-steps chain that could assess the capabilities of the simulator to manage each kind of possible inputs: from theoretical data to real acquisitions, the simulator behavior has been studied in different conditions. The procedure is composed by four different approaches, providing each time a connection between meteorological inputs and the simulated radar observables. The techniques proposed can be theoretically applied to any kind of NWP-based simulator but in this context, have been modeled on POWERS architecture. POWERS is a Polarimetric Weather Radar Simulator developed by Stefano Lischi into the framework of the Cleansky EU program (KLEAN and X-Wald projects) by the RaSS (Radar Surveillance System) Laboratory. POWERS aimed at pointing out the remarkable benefits that polarimetry could bring to the new generation of avionic weather radar systems with important impact on flight safety and

From February to August 2017 (6 months) I have been working for the Thales S.p.A company (Sesto Fiorentino, FI). My Thales tutor was Eng. Filippo Gallo and the Academic tutor the Prof. Luca Facheris. My six months internship has had as aim to become confident with the management process and integration of the telecommunication system applied to the Transportation field.
In particular, the focus has been put on the requirements management and on the validation process of the solution proposed. Even if in a different context, I had to think about different methods to assess the good performances of the designed solution with respect to the customer requirements. For my PhD thesis I had to validate a software beyond the state of the art, finding in the literature the proper references. During this internship, I had to face with the industry constrains regarding the validation process of devices, and integrated systems, already in use.
While in the Research the validation depends a lot on the field of application, the Industry validation process is standardized and follows given steps, regardless the company scope of work. The designed solution need to be tested from the smallest component (FAT: Factory acceptance test), passing through to the integrated system partially recreated in a test platform (IFAT: Integrated Factory Acceptance Test), to finally accomplish the installation checks (SAT: Site acceptance test) and verify the integrated system on site (SIT: Site Integrated tests).
