Site Location
Introduction
Shougang industrial area is situated in Shijingshan District, in the west of Beijing. The site of design, namely the Shougang Industrial Park, is a central area in the north of Shougang Industrial Area, having a surface of 18 hectare. Located in the southwest of Shijingshan District, at the end of the Chang'an Avenue, 16 kilometers from the Tiananmen Square, gradually enters into the urban core area. Around the site there are plenty of natural and cultural landscapes like the Shijing Mountain, Siping Mountain, Yongding River, some urban parks and shopping malls, and inside of it there are lots of valuable industrial heritages from the history of Shougang, like some large-scaled furnaces, coking plant, cooling pool, chimneys and so on. Brownfield and industrial heritages are two core factors of this site, also the problems waiting for solutions.

Soil pollution
Soil pollution is a big challenge for the Shougang brownfield. In the site the heavy metal elements of Hg, Fe, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn are beyond the natural background level. Near the coking plant and the northern part, the organic pollutants are excessive including benzopyrene, benzene and naphthalene. They threaten human health, causing pollution of underground water, making the site difficult to redevelop. For the regeneration program, The primary task is to make the site clean and healthy.

Land Use
In the future, Shougang Area can be described as five zones with two belts, namely the North Industrial Themed Park, Cultural and Creative Park, Integrated Service Center Area, Economic Center and Comprehensive Supporting Area, also a leisure greenbelt along Yongding River and another greenbelt of industrial heritages. The Shougang Industrial Park is in the north of this greenbelt. After construction, because of its significant location, unique history and strong connection with local people, it will be a cultural hot spot, serving for the whole Shijingshan
District.
