The 14th Japan-Korea Symposium on Catalysis was held on July 1–3, 2013, Nagoya, Japan, which was organized by Catalysis Society of Japan, and chaired by Prof. Atsushi Satsuma of Nagoya University. This bilateral symposium has been held in every two years since 1987 as an invaluable and successful occasion to exchange information about recent studies on catalysis and to promote cooperative relationships among scientist and engineers in both Japan and Korea. We discussed all aspects of catalytic research ranging from fundamentals to applications, in the field of
heterogeneous catalysis, homogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, in
consideration of green and sustainable technology for chemical conversion, energy conversion and environmental issues.
This symposium consisted of two sessions. Youth Session had two plenary lectures by Prof. Miki Niwa (Aichi Institute of Technology) and Prof. Sang-Eon Park (Inha University) followed by 32 oral presentations and 57 posters. General Session provided two plenary lectures by Prof. Noritaka Mizuno (The University of Tokyo) and Prof. Gon Seo (Chonnam National University), four keynote lectures by Prof. Masato Machida (Kumamoto University), Prof. Yong-gun Shul (Yonsei University), Prof. Michikazu Hara (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Dr. Seung-Hoon Oh (SK Innovation Global Technology), 48 oral presentations and 42 posters. The symposium was attended by 233 participants totally (122 and 111 participants from Japan and Korea, respectively). This special issue of Catalysis Today contains 28 papers that were originally presented in this symposium as oral presentations and selected through the strict review process.
The Organizing Committee were Prof. Atsushi Satsuma (Nagoya University, Chairman), Prof. Tomohiko Tagawa (Nagoya University, Vice-chair), Prof. Hisao Yoshida, (Kyoto University, program and publication), Prof. Masakuni Ozawa, (Nagoya University, program and publication), Prof. Masaaki Haneda (Nagoya Institute of Technology, program and publication), Dr. Junya Ohyama (Nagoya University, secretary and young session coordinator), Prof. O-Bong Yang (Chonbuk National University, coordinator in Korea and publication) and Prof. Kwan Young Lee (Korea University, Chair of the next symposium). Other staffs as well as many students are
acknowledged for their great efforts. It is also acknowledged that the CAMPUS Asia program and the Program for Leading Graduate Schools, Nagoya University, for their financial supports. We also would like to thank to Prof. J.J. Spivey, the Editor of this journal for his valuable advice and
cooperation, and Elsevier for their efforts and cooperation in preparing this special issue. Finally, we deeply appreciate all contributors and reviewers of the papers in this special issue for their kind supports.
