Religious Architectural Heritage Losing its Functions: Strategies to Mitigate the Problem and Provide New
Value Through Territorial Context Analysis
PROGETTO DI RICERCA/RESEARCH PROJECT (descrivere sinteticamente / please provide a short

Historical religious heritage is vital for territorial identity. Such heritage, besides comprising most often wonderful landmarks, is a defining part of the shared identity of a population. In Italy, some of the buildings that once housed worship-related functions have today lost their purpose due to various causes. The conservation of these numerous historical architectures requires large amount of funds and resources. However, attempts at reviving historical sites might eventually not succeed and lead to a waste of resources. As a consequence, the wise allocation of the available resources is paramount. Besides questioning the reasons that have been causing the problem, it is important to propose a working methodology towards a conscious reuse of the affected buildings, aiming at wisely and sustainably allocate the available funds to prevent, or at least lessen, the risk of failure of any attempts at repurposing historical sites.
This research studies and proposes
- a data-gathering and knowledge-building procedure, leading to the construction of a quantitative and up-to-date picture of the present reality, which in turn can support all subsequent assessments;
- a Multi-Criteria-Decision-Analysis-based methodology aimed at supporting conservation designers and public decision makers in prioritizing actions and allocating resources where they can be most effective, to the greatest benefit of territories and their communities.
