ASSIGNMENT 2
1. (SAS Example) Consider ecological data from Woodyard Hammock, a beech-magnolia forest in north- ern Florida. The data involve counts of the numbers of trees of each species in 72 sites. 13 most common species were considered and listed below.
carcar Carpinus caroliniana Ironwood corflo Cornus florida Dogwood faggra Fagus grandifolia Beech
ileopa Ilex opaca Holly
liqsty Liquidambar styraciflua Sweetgum maggra Magnolia grandiflora Magnolia nyssyl Nyssa sylvatica Blackgum ostvir Ostrya virginiana Blue Beech oxyarb Oxydendrum arboreum Sourwood pingla Pinus glabra Spruce Pine quenig Quercus nigra Water Oak
quemic Quercus michauxii Swamp Chestnut Oak symtin Symplocus tinctoria Horse Sugar
In the first column the code identifying the species, in the second column its scientific name, and in the third column the common name for each species. The most commonly found of these species were the beech and magnolia. The objective is to group sample sites together into clusters that share similar species compositions. Which species characterize the groups? Could you identify groups of species more correlated?
The data are in the file wood.txt
2. The occurrences of 7 type of crimes in the different states of USA in 1977 are listened in the file crimes.txt. The crimes are: Murder, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny-theft, Motor Vehicle Theft (http://www.libraryindex.com/pages/13/Types-Crime.html) The objective is to group states with similar crimes. Which crimes characterize the groups? Which states are in each group? Which crimes are more correlated?
3. The data are from the HBAT industry, which is a premium manufacturer of paper products in U.S.
Its paper products are used widely in the newsprint industry and the magazine industry both inside and outside of North America. It is a well established company with a fully developed Marketing unit.
To supply the paper products to the customer the company either uses its own distribution channels or brokers channel. But due to the changing in customer perceptions and relationships, the market share of HBAT challenged by newer companies. To repair it HBAT management wants to change the company marketing strategy and wants to identify and position the company accordingly to the characteristics of its customers and the relationships between their perceptions of HBAT, and their actions towards HBAT (e.g., satisfaction and likelihood to recommend).
The data are in the file HBAT.xlsx. A description is in
