What is CleanAir@School?

It is a Citizen Science and environmental education initiative of the European Network of the Heads of Environmental Protection Agen- cies (EPA Network) and it is coordinated by the European Environ- ment Agency (EEA). It is addressed to schools across Europe.

Who are the actors of CleanAir@School?

The coordinator for Italy is the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), which participates together with the Regional Environmental Protection Agencies of the Na- tional System for Environmental Protection (SNPA). The project – sponsored by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) – is also carried out in cooperation with the National Association of the Italian Municipalities (ANCI), the participating municipalities and the schools.

What is the target of CleanAir@School?

The target is the school. Young citizens, students, are the key ac- tors of the project together with teachers and parents in a strict alliance between school and out of school world.

What are the themes of CleanAir@School?

The main theme of the initiative is air quality monitoring in the urban environment through the measurement of nitrogen dio- xide (NO2), one of the main responsible for road traffic-induced pollution. Air quality is monitored using NO2passive samplers installed outside the schools. Other themes covered by the pro- jects, which are strictly related to air pollution in our cities, are the relationship between environment and health and sustaina- ble mobility.

What are the objectives of CleanAir@School?

The main objectives are to raise awareness and to educate young people on air pollution and air quality thereby stimulating behaviou- ral changes, inducing the adoption of sustainable behaviours as well as contributing to collect monitoring data in their respective cities.

Who is involved in CleanAir@School?

Students from the Italian schools involved with parents and teachers participate in the project. All citizens of the participating municipalities are encouraged to support the initiative by participating to the awareness-raising events and to the BikeDays events organized in their respective cities.

A special thanks to AQUARIA Srl for having donated the passive samplers to monitor nitrogen dioxide in 100 schools.
