4 – Simulations on the fine grid

Conclusions

In this paper, we have first investigated the performance of a VMS-LES method in which different subgrid scale models have been used. The test case considered for this validation is the flow past a circular cylinder at M

= 0.1 and Re

D

= 3900 the numerical results obtain on the coarse grid show an overall good agreement with the experimental data, especially with the low- Mach preconditioning scheme. These results, also show that the influence of the SGS model in our VMS-LES approach is weak.

In the second part we have carried out VMS-LES simulations of the same test case but on a more refined grid. On the basis of the results on the coarse grid, the simulations on the fine grid have been performed using precondi- tioning. surprisingly the results obtained on the fine grid do not completely agree with the experimental data in particular, a too larger value of the recirculation length l

r

is obtained.

Once again, the results opbtained with the different SGS models are al- most the same. The reasons of the observed discrepancies with the experi- mental data are still unclear.

Additional simulations were carried out on the fine grid, in which the time step was reduced and a different construction of the finite-volume cells was used. Unfortunately, this did not yeld any improvement. Further studies are, thus, in progress to investigate different possible sources of discrepancy.
