(1) Map of Pisa; highlight on the lo- cation of the “New Footbridge Gualandi”

The idea of designing a link in the historical cen- ter of Pisa, namely a “conjunction” between the two thoroughfares of the city on Via Santa Maria and Sant’Antonio, has ancient origins.

The first bridge located in that area was built in the late twelfth century, for reasons of internal strife be- tween the noble families of the city. With the decline of Pisa - the defeat of Meloria by the Genoese, the drastic reduction of the trade, the population decline, and finally the conquest by Florence - the city urban infrastructures went deteriorating and the bridge in question collapsed, at the beginning of the fifteenth century.

Since then it has been proposed several times to re- build that connection, for various reasons: in 1825 he wanted to make a bold metal three bays suspended bridge, in 1852 the first masterplan of city included an iron bridge with that exact location, in 1857 it gave a new version; more recently, in 1967, there was built a footbridge driveway to meet the communica-

tion needs between the two banks of the Arno, which arose as a result of the devastating flood of ’66.

This walkway was demolished in 1975 cause of his temporary characters, and from that moment on no other operations were done on that site.

(2) Structure with two rows of op- posing arches: solution adopted in the “New Footbridge Gualandi”

But the reconstruction projects continued: a new cycle-pedestrian walkway of great formal elegance, with metal frame and glazed deck and railings, is what former Superintendent of Cultural Heritage arch.

Malchiodi planned to make, to create a museum route unitary and organic. This bridge, located in con- nection of two important streets, by its very location would also be able to promote the rehabilitation of residential facilities in the historic center, improving the quality of life of residents and giving rise to the general development of the districts of Santa Maria and Sant’Antonio, now unfortunately not at all in- cluded in the dynamics of city life.

My thesis is part of this comprehensive plan, and

has the aim to develop the design of the cycle-

pedestrian footbridge in all its forms: a short his-

torical reconstruction precedes the form-finding

process and the phases of design and verification

(structural and geotechnical).
