Paola Italiani is an immunologist at the National Research Council, and heads the “Laboratory of Innate Immunity, Inflammation and Immuno-Nanosafety” of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. She has focussed her research interest on the mechanisms of the inflammatory response and of the activation of innate defense cells in physiological conditions and during pathological derangements. In this context, she studies the role of human monocytes and macrophages in the development of the inflammatory response, in terms of their functional polarization in response to different microenvironments. Moreover, she has addressed the modulation of macrophage functions for predictive assessment of the health hazard posed by engineered nanoparticles, nanomedicines, and nano- and microplastics (immuno-nanosafety).

Recently, she has approached the comparative study of cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning the onset of innate immune reaction and the development of innate immune memory in marine invertebrates and in human monocytes and macrophages.
