ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Since I first entered University I have been determined to work in the developmental psychology field as a researcher and achieving a PhD degree has been the most important long-term professional aspiration for me. There are lots of people I would like to thank for a huge variety of reasons and for helping me to reach this important goal for me.

Firstly, I would like to thank my supervisor professor Maria Tallandini, as this thesis grew from our previous research on the topic and her decision to support my project.

She not only shared with me her expertise and research insight, but also brought me closer to the academic reality, enabling me to grasp its rich complexity. Her critical thought, fighting spirit combined with quiet encouragement, immediate empathy and commitment towards others are essential qualities, upon which I will always draw.

Many thanks to professor Michael Siegal whose research suggestions and precise sense of language contributed to the final version. The insights into the psychological research during his research seminars at our Department enriched me from both a professional and a critical point of view.

The precious assistance of Valentina Morsan and Michele Grassi enabled me to bypass the most persistent statistical obstacles to complete this thesis. Valentina has also provided me with her professional and emotional support in many difficult moments.

Many thanks to my PhD mates and colleagues at the Department whose friendship and support have made it more than a temporary place of study and work. I would especially like to thank Marina Camodeca for her professional advice and lovely friendship, Sandra Pellizzoni for her never fading optimism, Chiara Terpini for her placating sense of support and Bruno Bianchi for his morning greetings mixed with a sense of humour about life.

This research was possible due to the support of the Albanian, Serb, Russian and Slovene communities. It is impossible to reference the knowledge and insights gained from conversations with their members, especially Najada, Tatjana Rokvic, Irina Aiupova who also welcomed me as researcher and a friend.

I am grateful to the many immigrant families and their children who agreed to participate in the study, sharing their immigration histories and experiences with me.

I would like to say a big 'thank-you' to all school staff who agreed to take part in this research and especially to all teachers for having welcomed me into their classes. Although too numerous to name, they are all appreciated for their individual contributions. I would like to thank all undergraduate students who provided me with additional experimental data in Chapters 4, 5 and 6 that I regard as so important.

I wish to thank everybody with whom I have shared experiences in life. The warm support of my friends enabled me to complete this thesis and to have a wonderful time along the way. I wish to mention Alberto, Sandro e Fabio for the lovely dinners while listening to my “academic problems”, Barbara and Keith for the wonderful days that we spent together in London and for the special editing advice in relation to the English language, Poly and Alena for their immediate psychological support and Marieta and Ognyan for a friendly welcome at their cosy home.

This thesis is dedicated to my grandmother who has always supported and encouraged me to do my best in all matters of life, and to my parents without whom none of this would have even been possible.

Lastly, and most importantly, I wish to thank Corrado whose caring presence, wise advice, constant encouragement and love I have relied upon throughout my time at the University. This work and all my professional career would not have been possible without his immediate support and respect towards my choices even though we have not been able to see each other for long periods during these years of hard work, travelling and a variety of difficulties.
