Il corso si propone di attraversare il genere della letteratura di viaggio, e in particolar modo dei viaggi in Italia, per sollecitare una riflessione sul ruolo della penisola nell’immaginario anglofono dal Settecento ad oggi.
Alla fine del corso studentesse e studenti saranno in grado di identificare e analizzare testi di fiction e non-fiction ambientati in diverse località italiane, contestualizzarlo nel periodo storico in cui sono stati scritti e valutarne l’influenza in senso diacronico sulle contemporanee rotte turistiche.

Conoscenza della storia e della storia letteraria della Gran Bretagna.

L’altra Europa: sguardi anglofoni sull’Italia
L’Italia è una costante nell’immaginario britannico, che emerge almeno dalle esperienze del Grand Tour all’inizio del Settecento (inaugurate dal travelogue di Joseph Addison) per arrivare ai romanzi storici dell’Otto e Novecento ambientati nell’Italia del Rinascimento o della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Il Romanticismo è sicuramente un nodo fondamentale di questo paesaggio, dato che tutta la seconda generazione romantica (Byron, Shelley, Keats) vive lunghi periodi in Italia in una condizione quasi di esilio; ma non vanno sottovalutate le esplorazioni del primo
Novecento, influenzate dal darwinismo e dalla visione imperiale consolidatasi nel frattempo. Scopo del corso è esplorare il racconto dell’Italia da parte della Gran Bretagna e l’Impero, a partire dalle città più note – come Firenze – fino ai luoghi considerati più remoti come l’Abruzzo. Questo permetterà di ricostruire in forma di palinsesto la visione anglofona dell’Italia, sempre in bilico tra culla della civiltà europea e problematico confine con l’Africa.
Metodi didattici
Lezioni frontali; seminari con analisi di passi scelti dai testi letterari e dai saggi in bibliografia.
Agli studenti frequentanti sarà data l’opportunità di elaborare una mappa digitale basata su una selezione dei testi in programma, che sarà oggetto di una presentazione orale e di una breve tesina, e che sarà parte della valutazione finale.

La valutazione avverrà mediante colloquio orale. Durante il colloquio studentesse e studenti dovranno essere in grado di dimostrare le seguenti conoscenze e abilità:- storia sociale e culturale: saper contestualizzare ogni opera rispetto al periodo, rintracciando l’influenza dei maggiori eventi storici e socio- culturali nelle relazioni tra Italia, Gran Bretagna e territori dell’Impero britannico;
- analisi testuale: rintracciare e leggere correttamente passi rilevanti al tema del corso nella lingua originale dai testi primari, e saperli commentare utilizzando la saggistica pertinente; l’analisi dovrà intrecciare elementi tematici e caratteristiche formali dei testi analizzati.

The course aims to explore the genre of travel literature, in particular works featuring Italy, to investigate the role of the peninsula in the English-speaking imagery from the eighteenth century to the present day. At the end of the course students will be able to identify and analyse fictional and non-fictional texts set in different Italian locations, contextualise them in the historical period in which they were written and evaluate their influence on contemporary tourist routes.

The Other Europe: the English-speaking gaze on Italy
Italy is a constant element in the British imagination, emerging at least from the experiences of the Grand Tour at the beginning of the eighteenth century (inaugurated by Joseph Addison's travelogue) to the historical novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries set in Renaissance or First World War Italy. Romanticism is undoubtedly a crucial node in this landscape, given that the entire second Romantic generation (Byron, Shelley, Keats) lived long periods in Italy in a condition of exile; but the explorations of the early twentieth century, influenced by Darwinism and the imperial vision that had consolidated in the meantime, should not be underestimated. The aim of this module is to explore the narrative of Italy from the point of view of Great Britain and the Empire, from the best-known cities - such as Florence - to more remote places such as Abruzzo. This will allow students to reconstruct in palimpsest form the Anglophone vision of Italy, always on the edge between cradle of European civilisation and problematic boundary against Africa.
Teaching methods
Lectures; workshops with analysis of selected excerpts from primary works and secondary literature in the original language.
Attending students will be given the opportunity to develop a digital map based on a selection of the texts in the syllabus, which will be the subject of an oral presentation and a short paper, and will form part of the final assessment.
Assessment methods
Final assessment will be in the form of an oral interview. During the interview students will demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:
- social and cultural history: contextualise each work in relation to the period, tracing the influence of major historical and socio-cultural events on relations between Italy, Great Britain and the territories of the British Empire;
- textual analysis: trace and correctly read passages relevant to the course theme in the original language from the primary texts, and comment using relevant criticism; the analysis should interweave thematic elements and formal characteristics of the texts analysed.
