fin- ished my novitiate two years after Don Bosco's can- onization andI
am keepingthe
Golden Jubileeof
my profession a couple of years before the centenary celebrationsof his
death:a period of time
suffi- ciently long and significantto
prompt some reflec- tions on salesian experience.Profession was
for
me the beginningof a
con- crete way of following Christ, of an apostolic com-mitment in the Church, of predilection for
the young,of a
missionaryinculturation
overseas andof a
growing awarenessof the
salesianidentity
in aplurality of
cultures.It
made possiblea kind of
unforeseen adventure impossibleto
programmewhich, when the half-century is looked at
with
the eyesof
faith, manifest the creative presence of theSpirit, a
sharingin the
saving missionof the

and the daily provision of the
infinite
mercy of the FatherReligious prolession
and the turning point ol the Council
Half way through
thesefifty
yearsof my
sale- sianlife I
was able to take partin
thefour
sessionsof
the Second Ecumenical Councilof
the Vatican, the ecclesial eventof
the present century, the visitof the Holy Spirit to the
Church,the "great
pro- phecy"for
thethird
millenniumof
Christianity.During
the four
yearsof this
so extraordinar5r eventI felt
a rejuvenationof
salesian profession.At that time the will
becameevident in
the Church to make an energetic and decisiveturn;
the machinery was creaking under the braking actionof
factorswhich
had settledon it like
dustin
the courseof time. A
static mentality hadto
be over-come, one which was rather legalistic,
which smacked of self-sufEciency, resting on its laurels, im- prisonedin
out-ofdate structures, over-centralized and giving rise to dangerous reactions. This kindof
climate was widespread and there was urgent needfor
a breath of freshair to
renew it.The Council gave rise to a stimulating return to the sources.
It
askedfor
a more seriousfidelity
to religious profession, insertedmore
deeplyin
the mystery of Christ,in
the sanctity and specific miss- ion of the Founder,in
his pastoral originality; con- cerned about an apostolic senseof a
greater rela-tionship with the world for the
serviceand
ad- vancementof
men and women, about creative and dynamic activity, about the importance of the social dimensionin our
practiceof
the evangelical coun-sels
with
new demands, aboutthe
relaunchingof the laity and a more integral
awarenessof
Don Bosco's charism asa
Movementof
persons and asa message of sanctity for the young and for ordinary people.
The laborious search for identity
The
turning point
causedby the
Council invol- vedour
Congregation,like
all other religious insti- tutes,in
an intensive searchfor
a definitionof
our own identity against the background of the numer- ous changesin
the emerging cultures.To live the salesian profession
for
nearly twenty yearsin this
complex processof the
searchfor
identity has meant a lengthy commitment to reflec-tion
and dialogue livedin the
active participationin no fewer than four
General Chapters(19,
20,2l
and 22),which
involved every confrerein
the drawing up of the revisedtext
of the Constitutions and General Regulations.And
then the fact that during this
period obe- dience laid upon me the taskof
living the salesian profession first in the role of Councillor Generalfor
Formation and then as Rector Major, meantthat I
felt a still heavier sense of responsibility. At the end of the last (22nd) General Chapter, one of the most genuine momentsof
salesianjoy I
have ever felt was certainlythat of
renewing my professionwith the new text of the
Constitutions,after
solemnly entrustingthe entire
Congregationto the Virgin Help of Christians, our solicitous Teacher
and Guide.What has been emerging ever more clearly has been the figure
of
Don Bosco asour

Model: a
gift for the
Church andfor
us, raised up and fashionedby the Spirit of the Lord with
en- dowments and prophetic means of sanctity and ac-tivity which
transcend the cultureof
his own timeand
extend beyond geographical boundaries and historical eras.The dynamic holiness
of
Don Bosco appeared ever more clearly asthe
idealof
salesian profess-ion,
raisedin the
Churchto
"apostolic consecra-tion".
A further look at the holiness ol Don Bosco
After
so many years reflectionit is
possible to sum upin
a few lines Don Bosco's ideal of sanctity as an objective to be attained through our religious profession.Starting from the fact that
sanctityis at
the sametime
one andmultiform,r we
can detect in Don Bosco the presence of basic qualities common to all, and at the same time traits of a style which is all his own.Sanctity
is "one",
and consistsfor
everyone inthe
convinced practiceof faith,
hope and charity even at the cost of sacrifice;it
is a qrmbiosis of mysti- cism and asceticism which proclaims the fi.rllnessof
lifein
theSpirit:
a lovewhich
carries the cross!And
sanctityis "multiform" in
sofar
as each group, and even each individual, participates in thelife
and missionof the
Churchin
widely differing states and waysof life, all of them
expressionsof
the same Grace.More than

aspect.a Holiness is an inexhaust- ible theme which we must keep constantlyin
mind.let
us therefore add somefurther
reflections.Don
Boscohimself
condensedthe
mysticism and asceticism which marked his life style into two mottoes characteristic of the salesianspirit;
and he rendered concrete his participationin the
missionof the
Churchin the
choiceof a
specificfield of work,
livedwith
an original style and criteria.Let us look at these three points which provide
a kind of
synthesisof the spiritual
experienceof our
Father.- In the first
placethe
aspectof
"mysticism"(i.e. the life of faith, hope and charity) is condensed in the motto " da
mihi
animas" strengthened by rad- ical self-donationin
the practiceof
the evangelical counsels.It
implies a manner of contemplating the Father's loving kindness, of harkening to the savingWord, and of
sharingin his transforming
Love,which
producesin the heart an
uninterrupted unionwith
God.It
finds expressionin the
ecstasyof tireless apostolic activity: the interior
self- donationwhich
finds its outletin
the mission. This mysticismis
nourishedby the daily
meetingwith
Christwhich
prevents usfrom
losing sightof
the pastoral dimension ofour
commitments.-
The aspectof
"ascetics",which
means self- control and a spirit of sacrifice, is expressed by DonBosco in the motto "work and
temperance", strengthened here tooby
the actsof

herent in the practice of the evangelical counsels.
It
is a programme
which in
the styleof our
Founder is easily adaptable to cultural changes and received confirmation and deeper meaning from the progress madein the
anthropological sciences:the
realismof
self-donationthrough love of
one's neighbour according to the charity brought by Christinto
theworld.
To be true disciplesof
Christit
is indispens- ableto
cultivate a spirit of sacrifice, of guarding the heart andof
self-sacrifice,which
helps usto
avoid the insidious dismantlingof
religious discipline.-
Finally his "choice of a field ofwork" for
an active participation in the mission of the Church, isthat of
afruitful
pastoralwork for
the young andthe poor.
It
callsfor
continual comparisonwith
the situation of human society, startingfrom
the "poor and thelittle
ones" who are always there. Predilec-tion for the young
definesthe
extensionof
this choice, which is characterized by a style and man- ner of approachwhich
Don Bosco called the "pre- ventive system".This is a way
of
living together,of
dialogue,of
evangelizationand
advancement basedon
three fundamental principles:-
common sense ("reason"), as an expressionof a keen and well
balanced intelligence, which knows the workings of the human heart and social reality;- the religious dimension ("religion"), as
aconvinced vision
of
transcendence, a fundamental elementin
culturesand
one indispensablein
the formationof
every individual;-
awarm
and sincere affection ("loving kind- ness"), as an atmosphere oftrust,
dialogue and fa-scf.c40

The lasting
criterion for this
choiceand
styleis the
experienceof
Don Boscoin the
Oratory at Valdocco.sSo many
yearsof
salesian profession provide confirmation of the validity, beauty and up-to-date natureof
thiskind of
sanctity,which
has madeof
Don Bosco one of the most important Foundersof
spiritual Familiesin
the Church.The test ol his spiritual School
Don Bosco, who lived at a time
in
the last cen- tury when Saints were flourishingin
Piedmont, had the merit of starting an authentic " school of sanc- tity" .lf
the various apostolic works he began wereof
valuein his time, the fact that he
successfully promoteda particular kind of
holinesswould
be sufficientby itself to
make evidenta
remarkable spirituality which placeshim
among the great ones of the Churchwith
a fertile sanctity capable of rein- carnation among other peoplein
the courseof
fu- ture centuries.To render holiness an attractive and valid mess- age
for all
those he wasworking for,
Don Bosco presentedits
essencein a simple and
realistic fashionwhich
he adaptedto
the age,life
situationand cultural
circumstancesof those
concerned.Blessed Michael Rua,
St Mary
Domenica Mazza- rello, St Dominic Savio, to whom we may also addin a
certain sense BlessedLuigi
Orione and Luigi Guanella, all felt directly the influence of his kindof
holiness. The programme of youth spirituality livedby St Dominic
Saviois

Don Bosco himself has provided a description and deeper study of
it
in a biography of his young pupil, which has been frrlly commentedwith
great insight by Fr Albert Caviglia. The scheme of salesian sanc-tity
appearswith
equalclarity from
a study (fromthe
standpointof the kind of spirituality) of
the variousother
biographieswritten by Don
Bosco, andfrom
the livesof our
other saints and servantsof
God.Fr
Philip Rinalditoo is a
direct witnessto
the personal influence of Don Bosco.I
mentionhim
in particular because in this coming October the Con- gregation for the Causes of the Saintswill
begin the examination to establish the heroicity of his virtues;we trust that this may
proveto be the first
step towards early recognition at a higher level.The
plan of Don
Bosco's evangelical school is not exhausted in the saints and servants of God we have mentioned. There is another aspect, to whichwe
have perhapsnot
givenproper
attention but which has an important and special significance asregards his typical "experience of the Spirit".6
I
re- ferto

formation communities ofthe
Con- gregationin which during
Don Bosco's last years and immediately after his death, hisfirst
disciples caused salesian sanctity to flourish: the novitiate at FogJizzoand the
post-novitiateat
Valsalice.In
these houses worked Don Rua, Don Barberis, Don Bianchi and Don Piscetta (to name only a few), andit
is significant that in these communities soon after the death of our dear Father were formed and worked(over a period of not many
years, evenif
they were not actual contemporaries) a good numberof our
confreres who are now servants of God whose causes for beatification and canonization have been introduced:the
VenerableAndrew Beltrami,

Venerable Prince Augusto Czartoryski, the servant
of
God Don Luigi Variara, Blessed Luigi Versiglia, the servant of God Vincent Cimatti. Those two sale-sian
formation
communities are indeeda fruitful
extensionof the
authentic evangelical School be- gunby
Don Bosco.Another outstanding proof of this is the fact that some
of the
above mentioned confreresfelt
theirfirst
impulse towards sanctityin
a meeting, some- times a mere chance encounterbut
a decisive one,with
the person of the holy Founder: Don Beltrami,then a
studentat
Lanzo,read an
essayto
Don Bosco and receivedin
reply aword which
shaped his wholelife;
Bishop Versiglia had the same expe- rience; Prince Czartoryski was conqueredby
Don Boscoat a
meetingin
Paris; Don Variara experi- enceda
single glanceof
Don Bosco and remained struckby it for
his wholelife;
Don Cimattiin
his mother's arms saw Don Boscofrom
afar and sub- sequently gave life to his whole apostolate through theintuition of that
meeting when he was a small child.There can
be no doubt that it
wasnot
mere chancethat set
thesefuture beatified
confreresor
servantsof
Godon the path
followedby
Don Bosco.All this is a clear sign of how much the confre-
res felt the
greatnessand
attractivenessof
Don Bosco's sanctity, and of how there came to be createdin our
Congregationand Family a spiritual
slantand impulse which is
characteristicof its
phy-siognomy.
Here lies the
secretof
those originalbold
missionary endeavours;from
here came the energy for the marvellous expansion of the Salesian Familyin
every continent; here isthe
explanationfor
its adaptability to different cultures, thefruit of

an inborn instinct
of
universality.That this force of
sanctity wasnatural to
the lives of our great SDB and FMA missionaries of theearly
daysis
demonstratedtoo by the
surprising fact thatin
Patagonia (the first objective of salesianmissionary endeavour) the heights of youthful
sanctity were achieved
by the
Venerable ZeffirinoNamuncuri
and Laura Vicufla.Among candidates
for
the honours of the altars we may also recall as later witnessesto
Don Bosco'sSchool of sanctity:

Spanish martyrs who bore witness to their faith during the dramatic eventsof the civil war;

If
the school of salesian sanctity is the principal legacyof Don
Boscothe
Founder,the
centenary celebrationsfor the
one hundredth anniversaryof
his death must be marked especiallyby
a commit- mentto
a great concern and fidelity as regards the relaunching of its evangelical content.We are dealing with something which is a gift
of
the Holy Spirit
before becominga
programmeof
our own. But we know that the Spirit does not takeback what he has given; rather has he
shown, through thq eventof
the Council,that
thegift
has been renewed and is upto

valid prophecy for the
emergingculture of
the present era.If we
praywith this
purposein
view and reallyput our
backsinto our work, we
shall see great results.This is why we intend to make
of
1988 a yearof
reflection and resolutions on salesian sanctity in thelight
of the great conciliar guidelines of VaticanII.
We can
truly
say that the initiatives thought up so far by way of preparation do show that that wc are directingour
efforts mainlyin
this sense.- At
Congregational levelwe
haveput
our- selves, especially after the approval of the new textof the
Constitutions and Regulations,in a kind of
"state of novitiate" for an intense and lengthy
work of
ongoingformation.
Wewant in
1988to
makea
solemn renewalof our
religious profession asa living
expressionof that
apostolic consecrationwhich
thetext of the
Constitutions has taught us,in
thespirit of
the Council,to
know better,to
ap- preciateand to
witnessto with more
authentic depth and prophetic application to the present day.OnIy by intensifuing our pastoral charity in this way shall we be able
to
showthe world
thevitality of
Don Bosco's charism.-
At the level of the Salesian Family we feel in stronger communionwith
the other Groups which, Iike us, have renewed the basic texts oftheir
iden-tity
in fidelity to their origrns and to the Council. We want towork
togetherto
relaunch the overall pro-ject of
the Founder, especially by involving a large number of courageous lay people in the Associationof
Cooperatorsand that of the
Past Pupils. Weintend to give animation to a vast spiritual
andapostolic Movement of persons which will
beconcerned
with the
problemsof the young
and of the fieldof
education.- At
the level of young people, those to whomour work is primarily
directed,we
have already been committed for some time to a redefinition andpromotion of a youth spirituality which must
be the soul and objective (to be attained gradually in appropriate ways)of
our various activities.It is symptomatic that through the
interest and concernof
the Archbishopof Turin,
Cardinal Anastasio Ballastrero,the Holy Father has
pro- claimedthe
year extendingfrom
31 January 1988to
31 January 1989 as a special"Holy
Yearof
the Young"in
the Archdioceseof Turin.
The main ar- guments for study and reflection whichwill
charac- terize this "Year of grace for the young"will
be the prophetic contents of VaticanIL
Let us consider asour
special taskthat of
consigningthe
Council to young people as they move towards the year 2000!The conditions
for
gaining this extraordinary ju- bileewill
belaid
down very soonby
the Apostolic See andwill
be made known to all in good time.In
the meantime we can startthinking
already about the atmosphere to be prepared, programmes to bedrawn up,
pilgrimagesto be
organized,and
the sanctity to be made known and loved.The proclamation
of a
specialHoly
Year givesto
the celebrationsof
'88 awider
ecclesial dimen- sion. This is something we must keepin mind,
ex- tendingour
horizons beyondthe
Salesian Family;we must interest the Bishops and
faithful
of the lo- cal Churches in which we live and give our collabo- ration, and present the figure of Don Bosco as that of a modern saint raised up by God as a provident-ial
"Friend ofyouth",
and especiallyof
those who are poor and needy. The prospect is athrilling

Kinds of reflection to promote
I
thinkit
opportune to suggest at this point, as apractical guideline
for
thosewho
have the taskof
animation in the provinces, some themes for reflec-tion.
These areno more than an indication,
and certainlynot an
exhaustive one,of
certain topics for analysis which can contribute to the creationof
an apt climate for the celebrations. Some of the fol- lowing themes are more suitablefor
studyby
the confreres, others can be extendedto the
Salesian Family, others are more suitedto our
young peo- ple, and some can be consideredby
all.It
isto
be hopedthat

serveto stir up
the imagination and leadto the
formulationof
others in the same line but more suited to local conditions,with

present day, and help us alsoto
be witnessesto the
particular messageof the
evangelical Schoolof Don
Bosco among the young and the poor at the present day.Obiectives ol salesian sanctity
Recently
in Italy a few writers
have criticized Don Bosco's sanctity as being out of linewith
mod-ern culture;
oneof them
has even spokenof
an"anti-hagiography" to re-establish a more authentic vision of the message of the Gospel of Christ. Some of them speak and
write
of sanctity while ignoringthe spirit with which Don
Boscolived it, or
elsethey confuse
it with
certain cultural attitudes of his2

time. Others finally do not know
or
do not give se-rious attention
to
the spiritual Schoolwhich
grew up aroundour
Father and Founder.I think that
even criticismsof
thiskind
can be usefulto
us;in the first
place theywill
help us to avoid a certain hagiographical mythology and lead usto
do some deep rethinkingof
what constitutesthe
essenceof
holiness,which can
neverbe
re- ducedto
simple moralismand
mustbe
carefully distinguishedfrom
the cultural coating of the timein which it
is lived.They
will
stimulate ustoo to
greater precisionand clarity as
regardsthe historical pluriformity inherent in
concrete waysof
bearing witness tothe gospel
message, separatingthe
permanentelements
from the
characteristicsproper to
Don Bosco's evangelical way.With
the helpof the
HolySpirit
andthe
motherly protectionof the
Helpof
Christians, we have been able to dedicate ourselves seriously during these twenty yearsof
research tothis
delicatework. A
convincingproof of this
isprovided by the last three General Chapters and the renewed text
of
the Constitutions.In a
societyin
continual proeessof
secr:Iariza- tion, where sanctity seems to have been put on the fringe as a relic of past ages becauseit
would have nothingfurther of
valueto
contributeto
menof
amore
scientific and technicalculture, the
coming events of the celebrationsof
'88 invite usto
a fun- damental task: to renew the salesian professionfor
the new times!Such a task involves three points:
- a clear
reconsiderationof the
