RogerPilla, after lengthy

with the
RectorMajor, the
Superior Council, andother trustworthy advisers, made an official request
to be
relievedof his office
as Economer Generalon
accountof failing
healthand
advancing years.Fr Pilla
had agonisedfor
months about making this request, andit
went clearly against his salesian sentimentsto
haveto
askto
be teplaced. Youwill
see
for
yourselveshow
hefelt
andwhat
promptedhis
decisionwhen you read the letter he
wrote(v. p. 54 in
these Acts).On Friday

the Church whose special vocationis to

world.The People of God are imbued with

mystique". In
fact baptism implantsin
the heartof
every disciple akind of
instinct for the passionof
Christ.'

rWe are calledby the
Lordto the "life of the apostolate". As we look

Boscowe

special admirationfor
his"spirituality of work". As we
re-read the writings o{ our patron St Francisof
Sales, we take particular pleasurein what he
hasto
say about "ecstasy inaction". \il/e
have been trainedin this
particular spiritual way, and experience shows us the necessityof
meditatingto
someextent on the
relationship betweenactiaity
andsulfering
-
otherwise wecould develop false notions regarding
the
practical demandsof
the driving forceof our
salesian spirit.Meantime the history
of
Christianity teaches usthat
thereis a
closelink
betweenthe
apostolateand martyrdom. The twelve
apostles themselves suffered the pains of martyrdom.In
their martyrdomin China our two
confreresto be
beatified gaveg ACTS OF THE SUPEBTOB COUNCIL
magnificent witness
to the
salesian values and the salesianspirit of their
vocation.\7e ate all deeply
impressed- one
couldalmost say disconcerted

whenwe
seethat
oursalesian way of being holy can take on a very special style that is certainly exceptional
but still
genuinelysalesian:

wonderment,it
is a fact that such a wayof
sanctity has flourishedin one of the

this special characteristic- their distinctive
ethos is permeatedwith
thespirit of
oblation and suffering.Immersed

could very easily forget the great valuesof suffering.
But when we cometo think of it,
Don Bosco's salesianspirit with

salvation ofsouls". Our salesian martyrdom is generally bloodless
of
course;but
shouldGod so will, we must
be readyto
sacrificeour lives
evento the
sheddingof blood.
Speakingon his favourite topic,
the missions, Don Bosco clearly said,"If
the good Lord should seefit to
call anyof
usto
be martyrs, what should we haveto
feat!" sAnd indeed Bishop Versiglia and
Father Caravario,faithful
salesians, were nothing daunted.' Tbe

of his
passion as"my hour"
even thoughhe
thoughtof it with
anguish-
"pashs1,if thou art willing,
removethis cup from
me".It
wasin fact by his
passionand
deaththat
heredeemed
the world. He

Golgotha;and we are
reminded ofthis
dailyin the
euchatistic liturgy.The following
thoughts shouldhelp us
under- standthe
reasonsfor
this.Jesus
lived
his divine sonshipto the full,
opento the will of his
Father andin total
obedience.He
translatedhis
apostolic zealinto an
absolute self-oblation- both when the time for
actionarrived (and he began his public
minisry),
and whenit
wasthe time for
sufferingin
Gethsemane andon Calvary. In both his
action and suffering ril/e seea
single basicattitude: bis lilial

mustbe the
samewith us too
as adopted sons of God and living out our apostolic consecration:we must be
readyfor both
actionand
suffering.\[hat really matters is our
self-oblationin
theachievement

sonshipmust be the
sameas Christ's:
self- donationin
actionin untiting

the buildingof
the Father's kingdom; and self-donationin

the "actionof
the Father"whenever he so wills.
Urs von Balthasar writes,
"Christian
availability canbe
perfect and significantin both
action and suffering; andthis
makesit
superiorto the
great dedication and availabilityof
communism".It is {aith that directs our dedication
and availability-
we have the certaintythat
the most dedicated manin all history is
Christ.The awareness
of
such availability suggests that we explorefurther
thetwo
aspectsof our
vocation so often under discussion: the importanceof
rnissioru andthe
importanceof
contemplation.Apostolic
mission doesnot consist solely
inaction. Christ's life
makesthis very clear:
his mission as saviourof
mankind involvedboth
action and passion closely bonded together, each imbuingthe other
andtotally
inseparable.Much has been said and at great
lengthaboat rnission,
but not all
the discussions have hadthe mystery of Christ as their starting
point.Apostolic mission is possible only
with
self-donationto the
Fatherfor the
achievementof his plan
of salvation.It is far
morethan our driving
energy translatedinto activity,
creativeness and planning:it
includesaffliction,
suf{eringand
deathin
con-formity with the will of
God.Contemplation,
ot more
correctlythe
contem- platiae aspect,is
assuredly thevital
centreof
every religiouslife. Much of the
discussion regarding action and conternplation has failedto
attribute theuue

meditate on Christ's passion.Chatity is the driving force
of
both the apostolicand the
contemplativelife; and filial

suffering, makes us see clearly that the finalaim of this charity is total
self-oblationin
theparticipation

mysteryof Christ. Thus
wecan
say that total love
reaches beyondthe
active or contemplativelife,
for in bothit
aims at complete self-oblationfor the
Kingdomof Christ and
his Father.Given that the
basisof
apostolic commitmentis in fact filial
availabilityto
the Father then every"action-spirituality"
is
always opento
suffering: as thoughit would affirm that
"absoluteaction"
canonly
derivefrom the
Father.To
quote Urs von Balthasar again,"A
Christian cannot separate actionand
contemplation,for
inuuth an
attentive, receptiveand
open availabilityto the
Fatheris the
basisof his
every action; andthis
action must striveto
surpassitself in a
more profound activity-
which(in the form of
suf{er-ing) is the very
actionof God within
man whenhe is swept beyond his own proper
limits.
Christianliving,
then,is
always impelled beyond these two aspects (contemplation and action); and these latter donot
achieve mutual perfectionfrom without
butwithin
themselvesby their
mutual compenetration.One
who
seesthe
Church merely asa
sociologicalentity
cannot fathomthis
compenetration".6In
suffering and sickness,old
age andinfirmity, in
anguish and even at thepoint of
death, we shall derive much comfortin
knowingthat we
are notexcluded
from the
apostolate,but rather that
weare
makinga rcal conribution and furthering
itsful{ilment. The

considerationof suffering
may seem quite outmodedin
these modern times, when our _civilisationis
permeatedwith
an ever growingworldliness.
The dimming visionof a GoJ

certain manipulationof the
mystery ofChrist
are graduallywhittling

awarenessof sin.
Thisis
a fatalloss.
The ethicsof
modernlife_ are becoming more and more relative every day, and moral principles are being aggressively challenged.
The
forthcoming episcopal synodis timely
inJeedwith
its topic of reconciliation and penance. Withouta sense of sin man no longer understands the mystery
of
the cross, the sacrificeof
Calvary, martyrdom in the Church,or
suffering amongst the faithful.Christ
camenot for the just but for
sinners.He is the lord of
mankind throughoutall
history- but by
meansof his
redeemingaction.
"Thisis
the cupof
my blood, the bloodof the
new and everlasting covenant;it will be
shedfor you
andfor all
men sothat

pathological deviation.But to be

participatein the
passion and deathof
the Redeemeris a
sublimegift from
God and a duty that is indispensablefor
man's salvation.In

martyrdom"Some
Christians havebeen called from

love,"Be good! I know

bestfor myself. Now I

Martyrdom
is not the result of
personal plan-ning:
it
is agift ol
God acceptedin
joy and freedom- just
as Jesus, though tastingthe
bitterness ofthe
chaliceof
suffering,"freely
accepted it".12The whole secret
of
martyrdom liesin
being at the dispositionof
the Fatherto
the extentof
total self-oblation manifestedin
suffering and death, This willingnessto
suffer even unto death is the supreme manifestationof charity. "Having loved his

Bloodless martyrdornin the spirit of Don

Christ.In the spirit of Don

November 1877on the
occasionof the
3rd missionary expedition,Don
Bosco spokefrom
thepulpit of the
basilicaof Mary Help of
Christians and alluded to the death of Fr Baccino: "Missionaries mustbe
readyfor
anything, evento the point
of samificing their lives for the preaching of the Gospel.So
far the
salesians havenot had to
suffer reallygrave sacrifices
or
afflictions,with
the exception ofthe
deathof Fr Baccino.
Thosewho knew
him say that he died a victimof
the burden and fatigueof the
apostolate;he
couldbe
calleda martyr
of charity who sacrificed himselffor

hardworking missionary; but we have gaineda
protectorin

Bosco, placed special emphasison the
importanceof
his suffering, saying, "Besides martyrdom of blood there is also the martyrdom that is bloodless; indeed there are innumerable bloodless martyrdomsto be

Among the many bloodless martyrdoms the one
that is characteristically salesian is genuine abandon-
ment to the
apostolate- Don

sacrifices himself forthe

ecclesial callto
a vocationof
pastoral dedication, and he tailoredhis
self-oblationin
accordancewith his first

principle:
