Parking lot, this type of parking space usually on the ground floor and is connected through a gate (an entrance.) Therefor, the accessibility of the parking space is also good. Moreover, this kind of parking space offers a bigger space then prior one.

Thus, the plain spaces could create more complete spaces in order to create bigger activity areas.

Ancillary Parking Space, the public buildings (or some private buildings) also provide public parking spaces, and those space usually on the basement. most of this kind of parking spaces are interior. So, the new system can be placed more temporary activities.

Parking Tower, some urban spaces offer whole building for parking use. because those buildings have to fit the Architectur- al Law, the smallest dimension of them are usually the biggest then the rest types. The parking tower can be placed more obvious units for different events.

In the current situation of parking space in Taipei City, there are mainly four different types of parking space. Each of types has its own smallest dimension to fit the traffic laws in Taiwan and is placed different urban spaces. Moreover, those different types of parking spaces have different characteristics, so those characteristics would also affect the way of new public spac- es work. Therefore, new system should generate different prototypes according to different conditions.

On Street Parking Space, this is most common type of parking space and the spaces just are created next to the road. So the

connection between roads and new spaces is relatively high. New public spaces on on-street parking spaces could use this

feature to organize spaces.

The others can offer temporary service area, when there is a big event happened. For example, ancillary parking space is usually on the basement, so the accessibility could be not as convenience as parking lot. But, the space can offer to- tally interior surrounding, so that can fit for some particular activities. Moreover, parking tower can be the other temporary spaces. The building is three-dimensional, so there is an opportunity that some element can be placed on the elevation which can be more visible.

The Plain system of public spaces uses different ways to organize spaces in order to adapt the various parking conditions.

Because the different types of parking space have its own dimensions and conditions. Since the basic unit is the same, the organizations are different and the total sizes are different. In order to provide proper service and bring the features of the spaces into full play, so each types could have their own systems. Thus, the new system could appear in different scales.

Some of them can offer permanent service. Taking on-street parking space for example, because the parking spaces can be

divided into a small unit, and connect to the street directly, new urban space offer connection. Moreover, parking lots can be

also become permanent used space. Parking lots can offer bigger area then on-street parking spaces, so it can offer more

complete service areas.

On-street parking space is the smallest unit of all the parking spaces, the size of the unit is 5.5m x 2.5m. But it can crate a linear space which links units in series. Moreover, the accessibility of an on-street parking space is high, so user can use or go through the space easily. Because this kind of parking spaces are everywhere in Taipei city, that could create density in the area easier.

The organization of the on-street parking space considers the advantage of accessibility to generate flexible and changeable units in order to adapt more possibility. The size of the units is also 5.5m x 2.5m, so that could be only one unit on the parking space, or can be serious units to create a bigger service place. Moreover, the size ahs also considered the movement by trucks, so the limit of one unit is 5.5m x 2.5m according to the traffic laws in Taiwan.

In this system, each unit has to be a free-standing object, and trucks are only functioned as a movement tool, not park of the

unit. Thus, combinations of different units could be more variety and flexible.

The parking lots in Taipei city can offer more completely space on the ground floor then the on-street parking space. The size of the parking space can not be smaller then 17m x 15m. Because this kind of parking space is on the ground floor, users can access and leave the spaces easily.

Although the spaces are indirectly connecting to the street, the accessibility is usually still good enough to create a nice rela-

tionship between new space and the surroundings. In this scale, new spaces can convey different type of spaces, and those

types can be mix in a parking lot to create more fusion spaces, because of the scale of the space. Thus, the new space can

be placed a frame structure which can be filled in different units.

Ancillary parking spaces usually on the basement, so the accessibility would not as good ad prior two types and it would be not good enough to place permanent activity spaces. But, the spaces offer complete and totally interior areas, so that could be a chance for temporary activities. Moreover, regarding to the temporary used, the unit should be movable, like a Recreational Vehicle, which a service space is linked with a driving space. In this way, the vehicle as the public space, and the core of service area during an event. Some public buildings (also some private buildings) provide public parking spac- es. Those ancillary Parking Spaces usually open for 24 hours on the basement, so the accessibility would not be as wall the previous two. But, ancillary Parking Spaces usually in the good location in Taipei city, so it is easy to access to the entrance of the ancillary Parking Spaces in Taipei city.

Because the characteristics of ancillary Parking Spaces that good location, isolation from the city, and a completely space,

the plain system in ancillary Parking Spaces is used for temporary events. First, the location is ancillary to a public building,

so the parking spaces can be arrived for visitors. Second, the ancillary Parking Spaces are usually big, thus that is good

enough to extension space for big events. Third, because the places are usually on the basement, the spaces could fit for

events that needed to be controlled. The unit of the plain system in ancillary Parking Spaces is a truck-like box. The box

basically can be divided into two parts: a container and a vehicle; The vehicle is the controlling place and the container is the

service area. In this way, the units can get the event place rapidly, and leave the parking space quickly after events. When

the units arrive the ancillary Parking Spaces, furniture can be around the units, so the furniture create an activity scope and

the units become hub of the activity.

The Plain system of public spaces in the Ancillary Parking Spaces in Taipei city is used for the temporary events. Because Taipei city will have more and more international events in the future, those events will not only require more activity places for the events but also more supporting public spaces to tolerance visitors. The characterizes of Ancillary Parking Spaces are good location and isolated area which are good to be as the places for temporary events.

The system uses trucks as units, so the units can be easier to setup and remove. When there is no event, the ancillary park-

ing spaces can keep original function that serve the parking spaces for the citizens. Before events are happened, the plain

units can drive to the parking space and prepare for the events. During the event, furniture is put near the units creates activi-

ty scopes, and the units become service centers. After events, the vehicles can move rapidly, so the ancillary parking spaces

can go back to the original function quickly.

A parking tower is three-dimensional, which is usually the biggest scale of all parking spaces. (In this thesis, i don’t talk about an electric parking tower.) Because the volume this kind of parking spaces is usually large, it could not only be observed eas- ier but also offer three-dimensional spaces for new spaces to use. But the location is usually as good as the ancillary parking space in taipei city.

The new temporary space can take the advantages of parking towers to create temporary pavilions for big averts. The unit

of the plain system in parking towers can be separated into two main parts. The bigger part is service area, and the possi-

ble functions would contain in this space. Moreover, the other part is an extension area. The box hangs up the elevation of

parking tower and also connects with service area as a unit body. In this way, the box suspend outside the building could

become the events’ advertisements and also create visual connection by presenting the activities inside the box on the eleva-

tion.

The Plain system in this system is centered by tourist center, and the area around the tourist center is placed several various boxes. So the new spaces can margin in the surrounding easily, and both tourists and dwellers can use the places as the platforms to interact or exchange information each other.

The boxes create the area of new public spaces. From the center of the space to the border of the area, the boxes’ density is gradually decrease. In the corner, the boxes event stack to generate spaces in different height, and the boxes connected one by one can create bigger spaces for other functions. The density of the boxes near the border is related low and usually stand independently. Those single box is buffered the new public spaces and the city without walls, and the target of those boxes mostly is the nearby dwellers.

Because all the areas are also occupied by the convenience stores, the users use the areas can also enjoy the services

from the convenience stores. In this way, the new public spaces don’t have to places those functions which the convenience

stores have already offered. For example, the convenience stores offer free Wi-Fi, so the new public spaces don’t have to

offer another Wi-Fi system for the users. Moreover, the users can get food in the convenience store, so food courts can be

omitted. In this way, the new system can not only save more spaces for those already existing functions but also introduce

more opportunities for different people to meet each other.

Although the problem of new space doesn’t be defined, the morphology of those spaces trying to create the relationship between different users, in order to create variety activities. Basically, in plain system, there are four different prototypes, Flatness Space, Table Space, Stair Space, and Container Space. Though these four different types of spaces, new public spaces can generate different possibilities in Taipei city.

In order to more understand how those prototypes could be. There are some similar projects to represent each types of spaces. Those different kind of spaces create different relationship between various people. Moreover, the interface of those cases also offer various relations between the projects and the surroundings.

Instead of defining the particular functions in the new public systems, the new plain space only offers different space types

in order to let those new places are colorized by the surroundings and users. Moreover, the use of new spaces can be more

flexible. In this way, those spaces would not be isolated from the environment, because those public spaces can become

part of citizens’ life easier. At the same time, the plain system could also create new interfaces which generate new opportu-

nities for tourist and citizens to meet together.

Because People can go through the pavilion easily, the building became part of the plaza. The appeared of the project’s elevation was random with a lot of different gaps. In this way, the nature light and wind can get inside out the pavilion. So, the visitors inside the pavilion can not only experience the surroundings made by timber but also enjoy the atmosphere generated by nature light and wind. The gap created by the wood can not only let the nature atmosphere inside the pavilion but also can crate relationship between people inside the pavilion and outside the pavilion. The visitors inside the pavilion can observe the city through the gaps and crate the special scenery. On the other hand, people outside the building can see the activities inside the pavilion through the gaps. Thus, the activities inside pavilion started to have connection with the surroundings.

Sclera is the temporary pavilion for the London Design Festival’s Size+ Matter program and sponsored by a wood company.

The manufacture of the prefabricated timber elements was undertaken in Bavaria by Hess-Wohnwerk, the fabricator that had

worked on Renzo Piano’s Peek & Cloppenburg store in Cologne. The architect, David Adjaye, wanted to use innovate way

to create a pure space. The building is made by only one material (wood), so the visitors can experience the potential use in

the future and ambiance form the wood. The special wood is used not only for the building structure but also for the ceiling,

wall and floor. The Basically the pavilion is empty inside, and there is no any furniture inside the pavilion, so all the users can

define how to use the space. The users can roam through the pavilion and feel the difference created by the material. Visi-

tors can also sit with their back against the wall, because the wall provided special angle for people to sit. Moreover, people

can lay on the meddle of the pavilion and enjoy the space closed by the woods. The use was not defined in the pavilion. The

project was placed in the plaza which is a large, so the pavilion not only created a new activity space, but also defined a ne

The project created a semi-outdoor space which the elevation can be opened as the canopy of the sitting area when the cart was using. In this way, the temporary extension area (seat area) can be intangibly defined. Moreover, the size of the project is 10-meter-long (originally is 2 meter long). By using exaggeration, not only the cart can force variety people use the same table in order to encourage interaction, but also the extraordinary size can catch people’s attention, and attract more people join in.

White Limousine Yatai is a temporary structure which presented at The 2013 Echigo - Tsumat Art Triennial in Niigate, Japan and is designed by Tokyo-based architect Bow-Wow. The project mainly is a car contains a big table which is 10-meter-long.

A restaurant car usually is 3-meter-long. The project creates an oversize car, so different customers have to share the same table to bring people together and encourage interaction.

The project basically is an outdoor eating space. The project was usually parking on the side of the street, so customers can

feel surrounding when they are eating. On the other hand, people who just walks through the cart can also see the activi-

ties and feel the atmosphere from the cart. In this way, the project become a small public point that gather different people

TKTS Booth is a ticket center for a private company in Time Square which is also the most famous interesting point in New

York city. The architect, Choi Ropiha and Perkins Eastman, wants to create a public space which not only provides a place

people to use but also made the building more margin in the surroundings. So the ticket center basically creates a big stair-

case as the roof. Because the roof of the building becomes a stair opened to the public, the whole project becomes a part

of urban space system in the city. The stair (the roof) offers a meeting place not only for the customers waiting for the service

but also for all people going through the place. Thus, the project offers new chance for different people (known or unknown)

meet each other. Moreover, the stair faces to the main plaza in Time Square, so the private building becomes part of a tem-

Glass Gallery is commissioned by the City of Groningen and is a temporary structure for the extension of The Groninger Museum. The elevation of the building is purely transparent glass, so the relationship between inside and outside is different from other galleries. Because of the transparent glass, the surrounding becomes background of the gallery. Not only the forest surrounds the building, but also the activities outside the gallery becomes part of exhibitions. Moreover, the building is a big glass box, so the building itself can be seen as a big container for the city. People goes through the area can see the artworks easily.
