andheart I still retain the unforgettable
memo- ries of the celebration of the bicentenary of thebirth
of Don Bosco which we experiencedin
the month of August in the Salesian holy Iand of Valdocco and Colle Don Bosco.It fills
mewith joy
to hearthe
echoes ofthe
celebrationswhich took
placein
so many cor- ners ofthe world to mark this
special event. Thanksto the Holy Spirit the
Salesian Family is very much alive!The bicentenary of the
birth
of ourfather
Don Bosco has giv- enus the opportunity to
rememberhis life story to
deepen our understanding of his pedagogicalinspirations
andto relive
someof the
featuresof his spirituality. This
wasthe
programme pro- posed by my predecessorFr
Pascual Chavez-
a veryfruitful
pro-gramme. Weaving together the threads of the
history
the mission andthe
Salesianspirituality of the

As you can read

speak about God and about Jesus Christ who is the foundation of our personal Iives and ofour
Salesian Family; however,at the
sametime I
am speaking about the missionthat I
describe as "an adventure of theSpirit"
and about the communion amongus,with
us as the Church whichI
describe using the expression 'Journey together".This period of service as Rector Major has enabled me to come
to
knowbetter
andto
love morethe
Congregation andthe
Sale- sian Family.I
have had the privilege of being able to be a witnessof the many paths along which the Holy Spirit is leading our
Family
nowadays.I am
convincedthat the Holy Spirit is
beingvery
generouswith all of us and
expectsfrom us on our part
the
sameavailability that
He encounteredin
Don Bosco,Mother
Mazzarello, Dominic Savio andthe
very many others whoat
the school of holinessin
our great religious family were ready to follow Jesus,in
a radical mzrnner,allowing
themselvesto
be guided by theSpirit
of God.2. WITH JESUS!
Saying "WITH JESUS" at the beginning of the title of the
Strennatells
usthat
He is at the beginning andthe
centre ofall
our reflections.The
journey
we are proposingin
these pagesis much
morethan
a pastoralstrategr; it
is a declarationthat
onlywith
Jesus, in Jesus and through Jesuswill
we be able to undertake ajourney that really
is meaningful and decisivefor
our lives.In
a waysimilar to the
calls of Jesusin the
Gospel, today asthen he
gazes and looksattentively at
everyindividual, into
the depth of hisor
her heart, andfrom
there makes hisinvitation to
followhim
heard. This is what theChristian life
is about: the be-ginning
of a vocation, hearing oneself called by name.It
is essen-tially
thefollowing of
Jesus.It
is Jesus who takesthe initiative,
whojoins
us on thejour-
ney, who
with
hindness seeksa
meeting.His
gaze of predilection andhis
personalcall require a
responsefull of trust
and aban- donmentin
him; because when Jesus calls someone to followhim
he doesnot
givethem
a detailed programme,neither giving
rea- sonsnot
imposing conditions. The call of Jesus involves someonein
an adventure,in
a situation of risk.It
is a question offollowing
the path he takeswithout
a roadmap. Following Jesus means go- ing to thetrouble
of getting to one's feet and setting off,not
stay-ing
atthe
side ofthe
roadlike
a person watching someone going by who €rrouses enthusiasm or controversy or argument.What we know about the calls of Jesus
in
the Gospel has been repeated downthe
centuries, andit
isthe
same callthat
he has given to each one of usin
the Salesian Family, and the onethat
he givesto
every young person who meets }rrimand
who wantsand
decides to be one ofhis own.It
is a decisionthat
impliesthe
dar-ing
ofthe
disciple who overcomes everykind of fear
and makeslight
ofthe difficulties inherent in
the process offollowing,
such as rejection, exclusion, incomprehension, or the risks.6 AcTs oF THE GENERALCOUNCIL
Meeting Jesus, or better, being met by
him
provokes admira-tion, attraction,
fascination. Howeverthat
is not enough. Perhaps the mostimportant
experiencethat this
following involves is per- sonal friendshipwith
the Master; a friendshipthat
is understood and lived as dedication,faithfulness
andtrust.
Where there is no personalfriendship
there can be no following, even though there may beother things
such as enthusiasm andhard work to the
point of exhaustion. The call brings us face to facewith
the splen-did possibility of friendship,
and demandsheartfelt
attachmentto the
person of Jesusand
aradical
changeof life:
afollowing
and awalking with
Jesusthat
becomestransformed into
com-munion with him (Jn l,3L-5L); a following
and awalking with
Jesus
that
is also a question of stayingwith him,
giventhat it
is Iinked to a personal experiencethat
istruly
an encounter(Jn
15, 14-16).My
dearBrothers
and Sisters,what I
have presented briefly,trying
to get to the essentials, ought to be both thestarting point and
alsothe destination, the highest priority of our commit- ments
as educatorsand
evangelisersof the young. From this point forward the invitation I
amgiving
to you is to pursue per- sonally, sometimeswith
other educatorsin
the thousands of cen-tres of the
SalesianFamily around the world,
and alwayswith the young
people- always with
themand
alwaysfor
them-
afaith journey in which our relationship with
Jesusis
rekindled.Yes,
this is what it is all
about!Allowing
ourselvesto
be capti- vated byhim
as a person,allowing
ourselves to be won overnot
onlyby
an idealor
a missionbut by the living
Godincarnate in
him.Allowing
ourselves to be gradually transformed bythis
God who is passionate about alife that
is moreworthy
and happyfor
everyone.We ourselves and especially our young people have a desire
for
God and a need for God. "Italy, Europe and the world
have changed considerablyin
thesetwo
centuriesbut the
soulof
the young hasnot:
even today boys andgirls
are opento life
andto
the encounterwith
God andwith
others,but
there are so manyof
them exposed to discouragement,
spiritual
anemia and marginal-ization,"
Pope Francis says to us the Salesian Family.'And we have to be convinced
that this
opening of ourselvesto
a meetingwith
God,this
needfor
God becomes a decisive eventfor all
of us and especiallyfor
our young people, whenthe Christ
ofthe
Gospel,just
as he is,is
experienced asthe
onewho
givesfull
meaningto life,
movingon "from admiration to
knowledge, andfrom
knowledgeto
intimacy,to
love,to following, to imita- tion."' This
desireis
an educational and pastoral challengethat
we have to face up to
if
wewant
to cultivate and develop a Chris-tian spirituality for
our times.When one understands
this
and begins to liveit
out, one's per- sonal perspectives often change, because each one of us becomes more aware of God's freegift, that
he loved and loves us, andfix-
es his gaze on each one of
his
sons and daughters.This
urges usto
seekvery seriously this encounter which generally
takes place gradually,which ordinarily
matures slowlywith the
highsand lows of the limited human
response,that takes time
and space,that implies
a processthat is freely undertaken. It is for this
reason, sharing his own personal experience and conviction,that
Pope Francis,in
aninterview
he gave at the beginning of his pontificate invites people"to
embark on the adventure of seeking an encounter and of allowing themselves to be sought and allow- ing themselves to be encountered by God."'3. LET US JOURNEY TOGETHER

as the place in whicheverything is at
stake and aboutwhat
isthe
mostimportant thing in it,

can look at Jesus as presented
in the
Bible as he walksthe
roadsof
Galileewith his followers, meeting many
people, preaching, healing... Jesus who walksthe
streets among the people,in their
everyday lives, and sometimes surrounded by those
in
need, also by the curious, those seeking somethingdifferent,
those fascinat- edby him,
those who areindifferent,
those who seehim
as dan- gerous andwant
to getrid
of him.To pursue a path,
in
human terms is to befamiliar with it
and to recognizeit, to
knowthe
placesit
goesthrough which
wewill
come across
further
ahead, where the refreshing shady places are,and the springs. It is to
experiencewalking on stony
ground,climbing
steeptracks,
sometimesquite difficult and at
others quite easy and peaceful. Asin
the case of apilgrim
who iswalking in
search offaith,
orfor
some other reason associatedwith faith,
so
our
pursuing the path oflife with
Jesus isajourney that
wemake in Him
(Col 2,6),that we make with Him
because he has fascinated us, and we doit
united.The
messageof the
Strenna as wewill
be ableto
seein the
challenges andthe
proposalsin the frnal
pages,is
meantto
em- phasise very stronglythat
we undertake this journeythis walking not
alonebut united
among ourselves andwith
the young.Why united? Because
the
community and ecclesial dimensionis
something essentialin the Christian
message- which
wewill
be speaking about in these pages. Essentially,
it
is a question of an experiencein which
the believer feels supportedby
a great Love and by a community; a community on the move, which has a planfor the future. AII this will
meanthat
we areliving
alife that
isworth living
and which is thejoy
of being aChristian.'

4. AN ADVENTURE OF THE SPIRIT
4.1. An adventure very different from any kind of search for novelty
In many cultures the word
aduenture has aprimary signifi-
cancethat
meanssomething similar to a type of life in which
people seek asthe ultimate
goalthe living of
new experiences, andin which
elements such as insight, uncertainty, danger, goodfortune,
success orfailure
are essential.This
concept of adventure, understoodin this
way speaksto us about enterprising
seekersafter new emotions in which to
discoverunknown
ways,to
experience one'slimits,
andat the
sametime demonstrate
one's capacityfor taking risks. All of
these things would be the absolutely necessarT/ qualities of a good
"adventurer."
From another point of
view, andby way of an
example, we knowthat
the European concept of Romanticism consideredthat
"travelling
does not so much consistin
exploring new places asin
detaching oneselffrom
one'snative
soil so asto
comein
contactwith a world unknown. In this
sense, thejourney is formative
when onereturns
changed... or does notreturn."s
The
intention in
these pages is toidentify
paths ofinterior life
andspirituality in
orderto
pursue avery
specialkind of
adven-h;:e;
the aduenture of theSpirit.
4.2. The adventure of the Spirit is a JOURNEY INTO THE INNER LIFE
Those who are more
familiar with the
study ofthe inner life
frequently begintheir
reflection sayingthat in

human beingstry to
pursuein
orderto
recover the meaning oflife;
at other times to the yearning for the happinessthat
is always soughtbut
oftennot
found.The
dangerof
careless mistakesin this pursuit is great. In rather critical
terms there istalk
of presciptionswhich
are wide- spread and provide advice on howto
acquire a healthyrhythm of Iife, or how to
recovervarious
aspectsof
psychicand spiritual
health; how to achieve
interior
equilibrium; how to accept oneselfin
order to be happy, etc.
It
would seemthat
there is on offer a"spiri- tual supermarket" in which to
choose andput in our
shopping basket what most appeals to us. Wefind
offeringsthat
are esoteric, exotic, "new-agejewellery" or
pseudospiritualities
of every kind.uIt
can be seenthat
the danger liesin
the false paths ofinteri- or life
offeredby the market or the idolatrous nature of
certaininvitations
to aninterior
lifethat
is aflight
from the world. There is not even safetyin "the
ideolory of obsessive monothematic self-fulfilment
approach of'what
is happening to me?' 'how doI
feel?' ... a universethat
spins around one'sown
'ego' and cuts oneoff
from being availablefor
serviceto
andinterest in others."'
I
also found interesting a"metaphor" in
whichit
is suggestedthat
on certain occasions "one has the feelingthat it
has fallento
us to beliving at
atime
when even the way ofrelating to
oneself appearsto
have morein
commonwith
ahotel
where one some- times stays, rather thanwith
the place where getting to know one- selfis
anenriching
experience.Frequently
wewould
seemto
be closer tokilling
off theinterior life than
to fosteringits
strength- ening."tEven
though what
has been said so far, lookedat
positively, tells us about a search in the hope offilling
the emptinessin

it is certain that
sometimes these searches arein
responseto
awhole
massof
personaldisquiet
deafor silent, that
reachthe point of
becoming unbearable.And it is in this situation that
everyone, ourselves and
our
young peoplemust not fall into
thetrap
of narcisismthat
self-centrednessthat
closesindividuals in on their own interests and imprisons them in their own little
world.
This situation I
am describing leads us to seein
ourselves,the
Salesian Familyin the world
andin the
young people them- selveswith
whom we share our Iivesthat
there is a real dangerof
losing,or
havinglost, (or
simplyof
neverhaving
experienced) a tastefor
theinterior life
and theability
to discover the depthsin
our own lives.It
isnot
possibleto cultivate
aninterior life if
one "usesup"
the time in being spectators of the lives of others, simply stopping and
looking at outward
appearances.I
believethat
we haveto take this
challengemore seriously
and accompo,ny o:uryoung
people and thosewith
whom weinteract
sothat
we may all livein
a state of
enquiry
and sothat they
and we may become seekersafter the
essential. Because,when
any person, ayoung
person doesnot
discover,nor take interest in an inner journey within
themselves,
this
can lead to them becoming incapable of imagin- ing or dreamingtheir
own presentsituation
ortheir future.
And to continue
along theselines what
do we meanby the inner life?
In the
wordsof
a Carmelitenun
who has devotedher life to this
research which has led her to God,"the inner life
is thevital
awareness
that
everything isto
foundwithin
the Absolute, God, love,life.
Theinner life
isnot
the placeI retire
to by my own de- signbut it is to
cometo an
awarenessthat I

Sister has understood theinner life
is somethingthat forms part of the
essenceof our
existence.It is that
forcethat
urgesus towards
God, andis the
awarenessof being "within"
God and experiencing
this

many cultures, especially the more western ones on our planet, religious experience is socially marginalized, or in other words theinterior

the transcendent.It

reasonthat the individual

traces or signs of Godin
hisinterior
experience, going deeply into his innerself
into what echoes in his mind andin his heart

From
the Christian
perspectivethe inner life
isnot
the placeinto which I retire but rather the recognition that I
amwithin
Someone or
with
Someone.I
perceive myself asan"ego"
receivedfrom
Someone, as agtft of
Someone. Whento the
awarenessof the interior
dimension we give significance(that is to
say,that this
Someoneis the
personof
Jesusor of
Godthe Father) this
awareness becomestransformed into a spiritual
search. There- fore aspirituality without
aninner life
isunthinkable.

that there
is a placein our heart for him,
and we discoverthat
we have been given the privilege of such a personal relationship. How beautifulthis

at the sametime
we are 'God's beggers'.Christian spirituality is
therefore and above aU agift of
theSpirit. He is the "interior Master" of the spiritual journey of
each person. He awakens
in
us thethirst for
God(Jn
4,7) andat the
sametime
quenchesour thirst. This life in the Spirit is for Saint
Paul"life
hiddenwith Christ in God"
(Col 3,3)the life of
"the inner man is
renewed dayby

who makesthe Christian the dwelling

The consequence

God comesto
meet us andinvites
usto walk with him

takepart in
his life by means of theSpirit. In
fact asFr

we believethat
"everythingin
theworld that points
us towards God,everything that implicitly
orexplicitly
reminds usthe
presenceor
ofthe intervention
of God,everything that
urgesus to
seek God has asits
hidden moving forcethe Spirit.""
Nevertheless,
knowing
Godand
seekinghim is more than
something we ourselves want.It
is above all agift that
is offeredto
us and which isin
harmonywith
our situation of being seekersof
the Absolute, despitethe
factthat
very oftenour
steps are small and uncertain.It
isfrom this
perspectivethat
we remain focused on Jesusin

something reserved for an elitebut

Looking at Peter, the impetuous fisherman from Galilee, at the various stages of his following of the Lord,
with
his promises andhis infidelities, with his
successes andfailures
one canlearn
theimportant
lesson:it
is theSpirit
who urges on this unquestionable leader,full
ofnobility
and love for the Master to follow the plansof
God and not deform them
with
purely human desires.One who was a believing and observant Jew,
trusting in
the active presence of Godin
his people, and readyto
makehis
own opinionsprevail
evenby
force surrendersin the
face ofthe
evi- dence of who his Lord was. Thefirst
of the apostlesin
the emerg- ing Church's advance, he wept for his sinbut
had no doubt about his being forgiven. This was his greatnessnot without
resistanceuntil the time
ofhis true
conversion.And it is like that, in
fact, when weallow the Spirit to
act, andthis confirms the fact that like
Peter we have to be converted anewin
order to alwaysfollow
Jesus andnot
go ahead ofhim pointing out to him what
we be- lieve to bethe

16,22-23).*Paul of Tarsus was an observer of the Law, and scandalized by
the
unacceptable message of a man, a certain Jesus who died on the cross,felt it
his duty to persecute the Christians and then was captured by JesusChrist. This
experiencethat
he himself speaks about as something morethan
a visionor
anenlightenment,
he describes as aboveall
a revelation and as a vocation received pre- ciselyin
the encounterwith
the Risen One.It
is herethat
Paul isreally born
anew,it is
herethat
he receivedthe Holy Spirit
and was healed ofhis spiritual
and physical blindness. We could saythat
Paul was decisively against Jesus when Jesus was decisively on his side.This

5.4. Don Bosco open to the Spirit in order to
sayhis'yes' to the Lord in the young
The
spiritual life
of Don Boscowas
along and patient pil- grimage towards the depth of his rich and intense interi- or life. This
growthin
theinner life,
Iike everythingin
his apos-tolic activities,
was ajourney
heundertook
stepby
step awarethat
the goal God hadfor him
could not be reachedall
at once.It
needed people
to
accompanyhim, it
neededtime, it
needed a pe-riod
of apprenticeship.From being a boy Don
Boscocould not stop dreaming,
he imagined adifferent world for
his boys, abetter world.
However, beforeall
else he wanted to knowwhat
God expected ofhim.
The action ofthe Holy Spirit in him
took practicalform in the
call to become a priest, andin gradually
shapingin him
theheart
of an apostle of the young. He made hisinterior
journeyin
order to un- derstand,to allow himself to
besurprised by
God'splans. His
hands borethe marks of the diffrcult situation of XIX century
Piedmontese society, his heart was onfire
forthe
salvation of the young,his
feet followedthe path
of commitmentto the
poorest.However,
all this
didnot
happenjust
by chance. Don Bosco took care ofhis spiritual life in
orderto
liveto the full
his highest as-pirations,
the forcethat
animatedhim
and his innermost ideals.In
addition Don Bosco understoodthat this
"adventure of theSpirit" was not an experience intended for
afew boys with
exceptional gifts or an easy way of avoiding responsibilities. Every boy who entered the
Oratory
whatever his state or condition, wasinvited
to live afull Christian
life, called to livein
ajoyful
manner thelife
ofthe Spirit.
One
of his
mostbrilliant insights and
achievements wasto
have introducedin
hisdaily
pastoralwork the
idea of a tastefor
the spiritual life. Into the
lives of those boys hebrought
streams oflight,
of colours, of thejoyful
aspectsof Christian life. In
theOratory they did not only learn
atrade,
a senseof
duty,but
to-gether
with
thesethe spiritual
dimension oflife
wasbeautifully presented,'drawn out.'
6. CHALLENGES AND PROPOSALS
In the
preceding pagesI tried to
concentrate my refection, asfar
as possible, onwhat
could be fundamentalin undertaking
ajourney with
Jesus sothat it might
be a genuinejourney in
theSpirit,
somethingthat
leads us to have a passion forlife
ourselves and for accompanying our young peoplein
a trueAduenture of theSpirit that
can fil1their
lives and ours to thefull with
meaning.In
ourjourneying
asthe
Salesian Familywith
the young peo-ple "of our worlds" there where
we meetthem,
we have seen,with
sorrow onnot
a few occasions, boys and girlsin
whom there are so many seeds of goodness-
as Don Bosco used totell
us- but
who were wounded, who feel themselves lost, who have a
hunger
for Someone
whomight
look on themwith
the tendernessthat only
God possesses, who could removetheir
fears, could set freetheir
best energies and the gifts they have received, who could re- veal the precious pearlthat their situation
hides and which could maketheir
livesrich
andworthwhile.
Having
cometo this point, the
great challengeis to find
theways,
the
means andthe practical
suggestionsthat
enable us /oinuite
the young peopleto
cometogether in order to pursue a path that really is a breath of life, of
God.'sftesh aiX of the presence of the Spirit in their liues.
I suggest to you
somepathways that
can possibly help us, by way of avariety

to high goals, and being ourselves thefirst to
