great centenary feast.The

As I stated at the beginning of the letter I wrote on this
occurrence, alsomy
predecessors,Fr Egidio Vigand, Fr Juan

presence on the 60'n, 80'h and 90'n anniversary of the foundationof
theInstitute.
On the celebration of the centenaryI thought that

Although your beginnings are very well known
to
each oneof you, my
dearVDB
sisters,yet
weof the
Salesian Family, who accompany youin this
momentwith
truefraternity
and affection, we feelthe
need of knowirug to Loue.And in this
knowledge, we cannot ignoreyour origins or your
history,with the
motionsof the Spirit, with the
decisiverole of
some persons andwith
thediffrculties
and conquests experienced bythe
protagonists of the time.It
was,certainly, on that
October 26'h, 19L9,in the
chapeladjoining the
roomsof Don
Bosco,in the
presenceof Cardinal
Cagliero, who presided overthe
celebration, ofFr Philip
Rinaldi, who was then director ofthat
group ofZelatrici,
and of oneFMA
sister representing the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians,that
seven
Zelatrici
commenced a new experience of Salesian consecra-tion,
makingtheir first
profession of the evangelical counsels.There is something
in this
eventthat
to me is not only impor-tant, but
alsobeautiful and moving. This group of the
'seuen cheerfulnesses of theMadonna'pronounce their
consecrationfor
three years, before Cardinal Cagliero, who points out
that
"today, you begin your neu) life ofZelatrici",
andthat
the newInstitution
"had the great fortune
ofbeing
bornin
the place sacred to Venera- ble Don Bosco, where He himself had receiued thefirst
uowsand
the
first
promises Gixty years before, Cagliero himself was there), of those who had giuenlife

Daughtersof Mary with Fr Phitip Rinaldi who provisionally
replacesFr
Francesia as Director ofthe
Oratory; a figure of special signif- icance isMother

of the first interventions of Fr Rinaldi will consist in reconfirming in the directive council of the
Associationof the
Daughtersof Mary the
sevenoratorians who
already composedit.
Among these wefind four
ofthe first future zelatrici: Amalia

Milone, Caterina Borgia and Celestina Dominici.Fr Rinaldi will
re-enterin

these moments he saidto the

times, piety alone is no more enough: action is required"u.The great moment
that will mark

day of the novena of the Immaculate (Caterina Borgia and Teresa Salassa); and so, at the end

1917, the Zelatrici ofMary
Helpof
Christians are seven, thanks also to the commitment of Mother Fe- licina Fauda FMA who, transferred to Catania, can see before her departure thefulfilment
ofthis
dream of hers.And in the journey of consolidation, on January 29'h, t921,

themselveswill

Generalof the
FMAs,Mother
Caterina Daghero,to
givethem
a Daughter ofMary Help
ofChristians
astheir

encounterswith Fr Rinaldi

sister-assis-tant

moment.Fr Rinaldi will
accompanythem
spiritually, eventhough in a limited way
becauseof his duties
as Rector Major,until the
endof
1928.His
deathon
December 5'h, 1933,truly
leavesthem orphans. The
goodwill of Fr
Calogero Gus- mano, SDB, to whom the Association is entrusted, cannotfill

those years an attempt to"turn
theminto
religious people", an attempt outlinedin a new rule, probably drafted by Fr
Calogeroand
Sr.Clelia
Genghini,but this
wasnot
shared byall
theZelatrici.
It is
easyto
imagine howin this situation, the future
of the Associationmight
seem seriously compromised.Worth
mention-ing is the commitment of Luigina
Carpanerain continuing to maintain
frequent contactswith
the otherZelatrici
and the greateffort
of beingfaithful
to theinitial
dream.After the
deathof Fr Rinaldi, for
morethan ten
years,the Zelatrici live
a greatuncertainty
regardingtheir future.
They do notfind
sufficient supportin
the SDBs, orin
the FMAs.With
theunity
Luigina Carpanera had created,in
1943, theyturn
again, as a group, to SalesianFr
Domenico Garneri, imploringhim
to show concern for the Association. And he, after having reflected and con- sultedwith
some of his superiors, accepts and becomes aware that, evenin the
contextof the terrible
Second World War,there is
a group of women- sixty
fiveZelatrici
according to thelist of
1945,eleven of whom of the times of
Fr
Rinaldi-
whoin
spite ofdifficul-
ties and
their
feeling orphans, continue to livewith
great frdelity.Fr
Garneri pointsout to Fr
Ricaldonethat this work, attrib-
uted toFr
Rinaldi,with
a historynot
lacking of diffrculties, needs a definition regarding its future. Four months later, the responseof Fr
Ricaldone seemsto
suggestthat, "without
tahing any commit- rnent, the embers must be keptlit,
euenif
they are under the ashes"1.This
part
of the story is long and is not yet exemptfrom diffi-
culties. The superiors did not give adefinitive
response. The con-text
ofthe war
wasnot at all
favourable. GoodFr Garneri
asks the help of anFMA
assistant andit
isin this
periodthat,
despite precariousness,with the
pronouncement of vowsfor
six months or one year, another Salesian,Fr
Gerolamo Luzi,will
showinter-
estin
the Association, foundingtwo
new groups, onein
Bagnolo Piemonte and onein Milan, this latter in
the Provincial Houseof

the
FMAs. The presence of anFMA
sister who had already been assistant of theZelatrici with Fr Rinaldi,
helpsto better
under- stand how these new groups could be formedwith
threeZelatrici.
In the height
ofthe
war, on October 29'h,t944,lhe Zelatrici
celebrate the 25'n anniversary of thefirst
professions of the Asso-ciation, which
date bachto
October 2eh, 1919. Those who couldnot participate in the
celebration,either for family
reasonsor
because of distance, wereinvited to
renewtheir
vowsin private in
the presence of apriest, or
else toturn in
another momentto Fr
Garneri.Difficulties would not
be finishedyet. Fr Garneri
has a very poor health andin
1946 he was transferred to another house; the samething
happens toFr
Luzi who leaves Bagnolo and returnsto Turin, where
heunfortunately
diesin
Decemberof that
same yearat
only 42 years of age.In
September ofthe
same year, sig-nificant Luigina
Carpanera also dies.Fragile health does
not
allowFr
Garneri to closely accompany theZelatrici.
Tothis difficulty
was also to be added the discontent of a great part of them, because of the lack of response from the Rec- tor Major concerningtheir situation. The same Zelatrlci insistwith Fr
Garneri, who already feels old and worn out,to write
anew to the Rector Major.Fr
Garneri doesit
on May 1", 1948, asking clari- fication regarding the Zelatrici and suggesting to change the Assis-tant
so as not toruin
the work of Fr Rinaldi. However, no response comes from the Rector Major.In
the month of August 1949, oneof
the Zelatrici, presumably Maria Fassione, writes to the SDB supe- riors, asking them to give a
juridical
form to the work ofFr
Rinaldi andto
givethem
a greaterspiritual
preparation. Meanwhile, theZelatrici
knowthat in
the Church someinstitutions with
a seculartrait
are being born.In
fact, SecularInstitutes
had been officially recognizedin
the Churchin
1947 with Prouida Materthat
affirms, for the first time, the possibility of living a total consecration in afull
secularityin
the world,within
the world.Luigina
Carrpanera had died one year before the promulgation of Prouida MatenIt
seemsthat in the
Salesian environment,the
change takes placewith
the publication of the biography of the Servant of God,1O ACTS OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL
Fr Rinaldi, written by Fr
Eugenio Ceria, SDB andthe
Salesians get to know tlneZelatricl,
admiretheir
history and be interestedin them. In
1950,there is the
celebration ofthe priestly jubilee of Fr
Garneri, which is attended byall
theZelatrici;the
Eucharist ispresided over by
Fr
Renato ZiggSohti,then
Prefect of the Salesian Congregation.It
might be saidthat with him
appears, for thefirst
time, the person who would have had a veryimportant
rolein
thetransformation
of the Associationof
theZelatricl into the future
SecularInstitute. After
the death ofFr
Piero Ricaldone,Fr
Rena-to
ZiggSotti succeedshim in the
summerof
L9S2.Immediately,Fr
Garneri informshim
of the journey done by the Associationof
the
Zelatricl
ofMary
Help of Christians whoin that
moment are eighty-six,with
ages ranging between 22 and 76 years. A definitive systematization ofthis work
is beingfelt
as necessaq/.The life
ofthe
Association moves on, despitedifficulties,
be- tween renewals of the vows and encounters held whenever possi- ble.In this
period,Fr
Garneri leaves the Association in the hands of Mother Melchiorrina Biancardi, since he, because of his stateof
health, has to be transferredto
Cumiana.We are
in
1953.The
momentis not
easy. SomeZelatrici
ate discouraged because ofthe
general climate ofuncertainty;
some are afraidthat
the Associationwill not
call at anyharbour;
some members abandon the association tojoin
other associations of lay consecrated people, and some others profess as FMAs.In this moment, another
SDBwill
bevery significant. It
isFr
Stefano Maggiowho, after listening many times to
Teresa Frassati, speaksto the
RectorMajor W
Zigg1otti ofthe
Associa-tion
ofFr
Rinaldi. The Rector Major listens tohim with
greatin- terest
and apositive attitude, but
being awarethat in this
mo- ment the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians are involvedwith
great responsibility, he adds
that
the problemwill
be dealtwith if
one day
it will
be submittedto him. A
few days later,Fr
Maggio hasa meeting with Mother Linda Lucotti
and presentsto
herthe opportunity of
re-launchingthe
Association ofthe Zelatrici.
According to the existing
writings,
theMother
shows not to bein
favour,
but
she promisesthat
shewill
speakwith
her Council andwill
givehim
anofficial
response. This response arrives on Octo-ber
19'h, and is not positive.The
journey
ofthe
storyis still
long.I invite
youto
read thehistorical
descriptionin the
various existing publications. Therecertainly
are dialogues, encounters and clashes,there
are SDBs and FMAs who are motivated and enthusiasticin
the accompani-ment of
theZelatrici
and otherswho
donot
seeany future for them. A
moment comes whenthe
dialogueis
held between the RectorMajor Fr
R.Ziggiotti
andMother
GeneralLinda Lucotti.
They requested canonists to produce some studies. Other
episodes follow,until
on December 5'h, 1955, onthe
24'h anniver- sary ofthe
death ofFr Philip Rinaldi,
theZelatrici
have the new Rule ofLife
approved by the Superior Council of the Salesiansof
Don Bosco and by the General Council ofthe
FMAs'.On January 6'h, 1956, the Association of the
Zelatrici
assumes the new name of "Cooperators Oblates of St. John Bosco".In
the courseof the meeting of their central Council, on March
19'h,1959, the change of the name
with
thecurrent
one of "Volunteers of Don Bosco" is discussed and decided, and islater
accepted bythe
Rector Major.So far,
this longpilgrimage that
tells us, certainly, of ajourney in which only what
comesreally from
God canlast in time to
date, despitedifficulties;
andthis
because, as wewell
know,it
is theHoly Spirit that
inspires and guides. The same Constitutions of the VDBs attestthis in
thefirst article:
"The Volunteers of Don Bosco (VDB)liue in the
Church thespiritual and

enlightens us on how the foundation of your Associa-tion,
such asthe
oneof other similar realities that
were beingborn,

not linger excessively onit, but I will just highlight

many passages ofyour Constitutions, in particular
whenyou
indicate that you live your vocation making your own the Salesian charismthat
characterizesyou in the
Church andin the world
(cf. C 5).The Salesian
spirituality
is for you something essentialthat
gives anidentity

consecration. Your consecrated sec-ularity is by
no meanslimited
byyour
Salesianspirituality, but rather, in the diversity
and abundanceof the
SecularInstitutes the Spirit
has produced, andin which all participate in

genericism.Your Institute is

others precisely because ofits
Solesianspirituality:

characterizedby living in the
Churchthe spiritual

only for you, dear sisters,but for all the
other groups and branchesofthe big
tree of the Salesian Family.The Charter of the Salesian Family,
in article
38, requests the knowledge of the specificidentity
of thedifferent
Groups; we arenot Family by simply sharing
a common charism andthe
same mission. The knowledge and appreciation ofall
the other Groups is also required.This
knowledge passes,in our
case,through
an ever greater awareness ofthe contribution
implied,for our
whole Family, by the wonderfuloriginality
of the SecularInstitute
of the VDBs.Its originality is very significant
asfar
asharmony between the
choice for evangelization and insertionin
the various human con-texts
are concerned',. However,the contribution
ofthe Institute
is,

of all, specialin
what refers to your being, even morethan to the
mission. Yourlife, your
witness, undoubtedly indicate the presence of Godin
