Conclusion

In the final study, I have tried to analyse the consequences given to the social networks in the traditional communication channels, in particular in the standardized relationships between librarians and users, in a predefined social and territorial context, represented by the libraries involved in the research. The use of Facebook has offered to these institutions the possibility to modify their actual image, replacing an old-style prototype with an innovative model, to be able to facilitate the access to formal and informal library services, enabling an immediate and confidential relationship with people. In fact the difference between an institutional site and a Facebook page is actually characterized with the possibility of being able to directly relate with the operator. This aspect represents an important step forwards both from the point of view of the administration of resources as well as from the front office/back office relations, that appear to not be still closed between the cold virtual walls of an email but able to interact with the public.

Therefore, while an official site keeps an appearance of formal representation, in the Facebook page the formality dissolves almost completely, favouring the loss of stereotypical inhibitions, in as much as anyone can express their own opinion with words, images and sounds.

Thanks to the everyday management of public library services, I have been able to experiment with, in first person, what have been the consequences of the creation of a Facebook account for the structure.

genres has favoured the birth of a network of spontaneous contacts, that has enabled me to study the individual use of the actual virtual space from the part of adolescents and pre-adolescents, protagonists of the Net Generation. After I had described the libraries of North Sardinia, I wanted, after an attempt and not easy analysis, to focus the attention on eight institutional pages on local and international structures, with the intention to stimulate some curiosity and push towards navigation between these and other Facebook pages, sources of inspiration and stimulus for the drafting of this thesis. As a result I wish to draw attention to the words presented in the information space of the National Library of Ireland:

“We're the National Library of Ireland!

We like it when you "like" us, but we REALLY like it when you comment,

ask questions, even when you criticise us (though don't get carried away

with that!). Let us know what you want from us on Facebook...”
