Una grossa breccia prodottasi per colpo diretto di spezzone di bomba nel tamburo e nel catino dell'abside, presso l'arco maggiore, presso l’arco maggiore, ha fatto penetrare nella Chiesa le macerie che hanno spazzato via gli arredi dell'altare maggiore, danneggiandoli. [C1]

As there was much fighting in the vicinity the church and the campanile had received a number of artillery hits. There is one rather large hole on the right side of the campanile but it is reparable and does not endanger the tower. There are also holes at he second window and between the sixth seventh windows of the left aisle of the church. There are ten holes in the roof, one right above the entrance into the apse. The apse and its mosaics had been protected by a heavy beam-scaffold inside and a heavy cotton-wool curtain hung in front of the apse. Consequently the mosaics itself has had very little damage. There are four shrapnel holes in it, two in the blue field of the cross (at the right), and two in the lower border (one between the 1st and 2nd lambs at the left, and the other below the fourth lamb at the right). There s no damage to any of the representation in the mosaic. The glass is o f courses blown out from all the windows and was lying all over the floor together with the debris of of roof-tiles. The sarcophagi along the side aisles are all intact except for the second one in the left aisle which has a crack running. through the lamb at the left. The sculptured tabernacle at the end of the left aisle is intact. The area in front of the church was still mined at the time of the visit. [C5]

Despite penetration by numerous shells, only the slightest damage has occurred to mosaics, columns and sarcofagi. Protective covering of apse still in place. Roof to be examined for leaks and repaired where necessary to prevent infiltration over mosaics; holes and broken windows to be locked; structural stability of church and campanile to be checked and ensured. Colpita da numerose granate, fortunatamente senza riportare danni irrimediabili. Nulla infatti hanno sofferto i mosaici, solo una colonna e alcuni sarcofagi sono stati leggermente scheggiati. Il campanile presenta due squarci, non troppo estesi in corrispondenza del secondo e terzo ordine di bifore e altri danni in corrispondenza della cornice. Con i fondi dell’A.M.G. sono stati già riparati i muri e i teti. Solo la navata destra è rimasta in parte priva della copertura di tegole, e l’ardiva e la torre annessa sono ancora scoperte. Oltre al risarcimento dei danni summenzionati, occorrerà rimettere i vetri alabastrini alle finestre. Presso il Genio Civile è in corso una perizia di pronto intervento per L.301.688. A large number of bombs have fallen in the immediate vicinity (over a dozen within 75 yards of the Basilica). Neither the Basilica or the Palace of Teodorico appears to have received a direct hit (up to 10 Nov) but almost the entire range of building between the two has been demolished right up to Campanile, which is standing. There appears to have been a hit some 15 yards to the south of the apse. Estimated damage. Severe blast and fragmentation damage which must surely at least have loosened some of the mosaics. The house across the street from the church has been demolished, the house right up against the round campanile has also collapsed around the foot of the campanile, but the campanile is intact. Inside the church, the stucco vaults of the right aisle, which were built in the 18th century, have collapsed in part as the results of blast damage. Danni al tetto e al cassettonato e alle finestre, già chiuse in basso con lastre di alabastro. Gravemente colpita la sagrestia con i bei mobili di noce e alquanto danneggiato il chiostro. Leggermente colpito anche il campanile all’altezza della cornice. Il rettore della chiesa ha subito provveduto a riattare il chiostro e a rifare alcuni degli ambienti di abitazione ad esso collegati. Per tali lavori codesto ministero ha già concesso un contributo di L.100.000 , pari ad un terzo dell’importo dei lavori stessi. Inoltre con fondi dell’A.M.G. sono stati restaurati i tetti della chiesa. Rimane da restaurare il cassettonato del XVI secolo, da rifare i telai e rimettere i vetri alabastrati alle finestre. [Ra38]
