5.2.4.1. Costruzione della matrice incidenza Archi Percorsi
Il primo passo per poter stimare la matrice O-D attuale è la costruzione della matrice di incidenza archi – percorsi che indica la relazione esistente fra gli stessi.
È quindi necessario stabilire con accuratezza quali siano i percorsi realmente utilizzabili dai convogli merci per collegare le coppie O-D.
Per molte delle coppie O-D i treni merci possono sicuramente utilizzare più percorsi servendosi di tragitti diversi. Tali percorsi sono ricostruiti sulla base dell’analisi degli effettivi itinerari realizzati dai treni merci riportati sull’orario d’esercizio vigente.
87 Il problema della costruzione della matrice di incidenza è affrontato a partire dall’ipotesi che il principale traffico merci a livello nazionale e internazionale in Italia si sviluppi procedendo lungo le seguenti direttrici:
• porti - connessioni con la rete ferroviaria estera;
• porti – scali di smistamento principali, afferenti alle maggiori aree urbane della Penisola;
• scali di smistamento principali - connessioni con la rete ferroviaria estera. Nella seguente tabella si riportano le coppie O-D relative ai collegamenti tra i principali porti commerciali italiani e le connessioni con la rete ferroviaria estera, per ciascuna delle quali si è considerata la possibilità dell’esistenza di percorsi differenti.

Una volta definite le coppie O-D ed i relativi percorsi ammissibili è possibile costruire la matrice di incidenza archi-percorsi.
La matrice di incidenza ha tante righe quanti sono gli archi e tante colonne quanti sono i percorsi; il generico elemento che la compone, alk, vale 1 se l’arco l appartiene al percorso k, vale 0 altrimenti. Questa matrice può essere letta in due modi diversi: se si scorrono tutti gli elementi di una riga corrispondente al generico arco l si possono individuare tutti i percorsi che lo comprendono, viceversa se si scorrono gli elementi di una colonna corrispondente al generico percorso k, si possono individuare tutti gli archi che lo compongono.
Nella tabella seguente si riporta il dettaglio degli archi ferroviari che compongono ciascuno dei percorsi ammissibili sopra individuati. Gli archi sono definiti da un codice identificativo esplicitato nella successiva Tabella 20.
