Survey vessel Aretusa (5304) was built by Intermarine in Sarzana (SP). Launched on June 7, 2000, she was delivered to the Navy on January 10, 2002, together with twin ship Galatea (5308). The two Navy catamarans, in Fiber Reinforced Plastic, belong to the “Ninfe” class.
“Ninfe” class technical data sheet:
• Displacement: 415 tons
• Dimensions: 39.2 x 12.6 x 2.5 meters
• Crew: 31
• Propulsion: two Isotta Fraschini V1708T2ME diesel engines and two Isotta Fraschini GE8210M22 diesel engines
• Power 1,200 HP
• Autonomy: 1,700 miles at 13 knots
• Speed: 13 knots
The Aretusa is equipped with single- and multi-beam echo sounders - the Kongsberg EM 302 (30 kHz) is employed in deep waters and the Konsgberg EM 2040 (200-400 KHz) in shallower waters.
A side-scan sonar is used to detect obstructions on the seabed that may be dangerous to navigation.
A jetboat equipped with a multi-beam
echo sounder is used for shallow water surveys.
Oceanographic equipment include bathyvelocimeter, CTD rosette of Niskin bottles, buckets, corers, ADCP, current meters.
The following activities were carried out in 2019:
» early 2019, Venice: maintenance to the engines, after 16,000 hours of operation;
» March 18 – 21, Venice: hydrographic training;
» April 15 – 18, Venice: hydrographic survey of the Arsenale and Riva dei Sette Martiri, as instructed by CINCNAV, in preparation for the Boat Show;
» April 26: official start of the hydrographic campaign, to coincide with Operation
“Mare Aperto 19-1”;
» May 28: hydrographic survey near the Navy base in Brindisi, as instructed by MARISTAT;
» June 5 – 8: survey of the Canale di Venezia in preparation for the Boat Show;
» July 2 – 3: survey in Otranto for Chart No. 189;

to the Italian Navy on January 10, 2002. . A catamaran like the Aretusa, she has the same technical characteristics and hydro-oceanographic equipment, except that it is not currently equipped with a multibeam echo sounder.
The Galatea’s hydrographic campaign started in April with the survey of the Gulf of Taranto (Charts No. 26 and No. 27); from April 15 to 18 surveys were carried out from Gallipoli to Leuca. In May, during operation “Offshore 19-1” the littorals of Augusta, Siracusa and Agnone Bagni were surveyed. In June, promotional activities were carried out with Marevivo Association, Ischia, and surveys were effected in Mar Grande di Taranto (Chart 148) and the Gulf of Taranto, using survey boat MBN 1189, made temporary available

activities: Nave Alliance
The Alliance (optical badge A5345 - call sign IALL) is a multi-purpose NATO research vessel (NRV ) employed mainly by the Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation - CMRE, on behalf of the Science and Technology Organization (STO).
Built in accordance with ABS and RINA standards, in April 1988 the Alliance was handed over to the Undersea Research Center (SACLANTCEN), later to become NATO Underwater Reserch Center (NURC ), and then STO/CMRE.
Technical data sheet:
• Launched on: July 9, 1986;
• Built in: Fincantieri - Muggiano (SP);
• Displacement: 3,180 tons;
• Length: 93 meters;
• Width: 15.2 meters;
• Motor apparatus: 2 Grandi Motori Trieste B 230.12 diesel engines, 1 KONGSBERG KG2-3C gas turbine, 2 electric motors SAM Electronic (ex-AEG) GC312 / 128/8 KZ 90/24;
• Electrical apparatus: 3 Isotta Fraschini ID36SS6V diesel generators;
• Power: 24.090 KW (32.305,22 HP);
• Speed: 16 knots;
• Autonomy: 7,200 miles at 16 knots;
• Crew: 44 crew members and max 20 researchers.
Since March 2016 the vessel has been crewed by the Italian Navy, according to a Memorandum of Understanding signed on December 2015, similar to the one signed for the Leonardo.
The Alliance
The Alliance’s deck covered in snow
The Alliance is used to test new technologies and innovative systems and equipment for research and scientific development in the field of environmental sciences and underwater acoustics, having been specially designed to guarantee minimum levels of sound propagation in the water. To this purpose, diesel engines and generators are contained in special boxes to minimize noise.
The vessel includes about 400 square meters of laboratories and is equipped with cranes, hoists, winches and an aft portal for the launching and recovery of underwater equipment.
The Alliance has been used by the Italian Navy in the High North research project.
