Jan 11, 2011 . The B-17, B-24, B 26, and B-29 were the workhorses of the AAF fleet. Both the B-25 and B 26 were twin engine, all-metal monoplanes. The B-25 "Mitchell" and B-26

"Marauder" were medium bombers used mainly at altitudes of 8,000 to 14,000 feet. They primarily supported ground forces by targeting.

The B-26 first saw combat in the Southwest Pacific, where it was used in New Guinea from the spring of 1942. However, the Army Air Forces replaced the Marauder with B-25 Mitchells in that theatre, and most B-26s served in Europe and the Mediterranean. I can only guess the reason why the B-25 remained in service but the B-26 did not. The B-26 was like a 2-engined substitute for a heavy bomber. A radical design, it was a sleek, bullet-shaped medium bomber that had powerful engines and an extremely small wing. Relying on speed, it was offered to the US Army Air.

The Martin B-26 is illustrated in figure 5.9, and some of the important characteristics of the aircraft are given in table III. I have read that the 9th AF used B-25s to attack bridges, railyards, mustering points, etc. My understanding is that they would attack at ~12,000 ft, rather than the ~30,000 ft the b-17s would use for industrial targets. It makes sense that a lower alt would be used: smaller target, but less well defended by AAA.
