Abstract

Background: Appetite controls food intake and consequently body weight. Hypnosis, by the

imagining/hallucination of eating food, has been employed to modulate gastrointestinal functions, but its effect on appetite regulation is unknown. In this pilot trial, we compared the effects of visual food

hallucination by hypnosis on subjective appetite and appetite-regulating hormones with those of a real meal. Methods: Eight healthy post-menopausal women were randomized in a cross-over design to consume a hallucinated breakfast (HB) or a real breakfast (RB) meal. Participants underwent measurements of appetite sensations (each 30-min until 270-min) and blood sample collection (at 20, 60, 90, 180-min). A 3-day food-record was filled after each session.

Results: The repeated measures ANCOVA, adjusted for baseline values, age and BMI, showed that HB increased postprandial satiety (p=0.04 and decreased hunger (p=0.02) when compared to RB. As expected, significantly higher glucose (p<0.001), insulin (p<0.001), and lower free fatty acid (p<0.001) concentrations were found after the RB. RB significantly increased postprandial levels of glucagon-like-peptide-1 and peptide YY at 20, 60, 90 and 180-min, whereas acylated-ghrelin and leptin levels did not differ between meals. Postprandial neuropeptide-Y and orexin-A values significantly increased at different time-points after the RB meal, but not following HB, while α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone levels enhanced after HB only. No differences in energy and macronutrient intakes were self-reported following the two meals.

Conclusions: Food-hallucination under hypnosis might modulate subjective appetite, by affecting the brain peptides involved in appetite control. Further studies are needed to confirm this pilot-trial results in healthy subjects and individuals with obesity.
