Background : The Anaerobic Threshold (AT) and VO2 max the basic parameters used to evaluate the athlete’s performance. More recently the role of Aerobic Threshold (AerT), corresponding to blood lactate of 2 mmol/litre and identified as the first cleft in the ventilatory curve of the cardiopulmonary test ( CPT), is not yet clarified. The aim of this study it is to compare VO2 max, AT and AerT in three different kinds of sport with the same dynamic load. Materials and Methods: A group of 41 athletes (16 soccer players, 10 professionals basket players and 15cyclists) were studied with a maximal CPT. The AerT, AT and VO2max were evaluated. Particularly for the AT, three different methods V-slope, Ventilatory Equivalents, Respiratory Exchange Ratio were used. The statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA test and a P value <.05 was considered significant. Results: The AT data , obtained in three methods, were substantially in overlapping; anyway there have been demonstrated higher values only in cycling ( p<0.01). Also VO2max values were higher (p < 0.01) in the same group. On the contrary the average values of Aer T for each group analyzed were 42,1 % (basket), 39.3 %(cycling) and 38.7% (soccer) statistically non significant .Conclusions: The results support the consistency of the three methods used to calculate the AT. The VO2 max and AT seems to be both the main parameters in distinguishing a peculiar performance of different kind of sports with the same dynamic load.
In addition to this the data obtained are suggestive to support the hypothesis of a possible application of the AerT to set up a protocol training in terms of “exercise as prescription” for subjects where the physical activity can have a therapeutical effect.
