Characterization and enhancement of the response of polyallyl-diglycol carbonate etched-track detectors for neutrons

This thesis is based on the analysis of nuclear track detectors (NTD), in particular,
detectors of polyallyl-diglycol carbonate (PADC), i.e. CR-39, which are polymers widely
used for the detection of ionizing radiation and neutron dosimetry. Basically, energetic
recoil particles from neutron interactions collide with the polymer structure and leave a trail
of broken chemical bonds within the material. When immersed in a concentrated caustic
solution (such as sodium or potassium hydroxide) hydroxide ions attack and erode the
polymer structure, etching away the bulk of the plastic. However, along the trails of
damage left by charged particles, the polymer is attacked more rapidly than in the bulk,
revealing the tracks of the charged particles. The number of tracks is proportional to the
absorbed dose.
Recent striking advances and general availability of computing and imaging technologies have benefited etched-track detectors, permitting investigations of track parameters with
extraordinary ease and power. However, there are still shortcomings to be addressed, such as: significant angular dependence; a somewhat limited sensitivity; and the under-response to certain types of neutron spectra, such as low-energy neutrons from reactors or high-energy accelerator-produced neutrons. All these issues can be tackled by enhancing the tracks, which can be most efficiently achieved by pre-etching treatments. Therefore, in this thesis we intend to investigate different types of pre-etching treatments and propose an optimum procedure to increase the detectors’ sensitivity at all energies. This would facilitate the determination of the tracks’ geometric parameters, allowing improved dosimetric assessments and neutron spectrometry.
