Hengelo
Hengelo was never granted city rights as it was only a small village that expanded in the 19th century during the industrial revolution. In the late 19th century it rapidly developed after the construction of an important railway junction. This attracted industry with a focus on technology: Stork B.V., Hazemeyer, N.V. Heemaf (now part of France's Alstom, Brush HMA, Brush-Barclay, the United States' Eaton, Essent, Heemaf BV, NV Nuon, and Wabtec),KHZ (now AkzoNobel),and Hollandse SignaalApparaten, now taken over
overby the Thales Group.Hengelo was the home town ofHengelo Bier,a local brewery.Nowadays, the beerbrand Twents is produced in Hengelo, brewed by De Twentse Bierbrouwerij. This brewery was founded in 2007 and is located in the monumentalfactory complex Hazemeijer.[6][circularreference]
During World WarII,the city was often bombed by the Allies because ofthe presence ofthe railways and the warindustry activities oflocalfactories. The heartofthe town was accidentally destroyed during the Bombing ofHengelo on 6 and 7 October1944,killing severalhundred people.

In addition, afterWorld WarIIthe synagogue thatsurvived the war,an entire block called de Telgen,a monastery atthe Thiemsbrug, the farm dating from the 17th century where Wolterten Cate was born, and the 19th-century town hall were all demolished. This has also left the city without much of an historicalcenter.
