whenthis letter
reaches you we shall have already celebratedat
Colle Don Bosco,with
thousands of young people,the
conclusionof this Bicentenary year of the birth of
Don Bosco,
that
weformally
opened also at Colle Don Bosco on 16August 2014.
Certainly,
in
what remains ofthis
year 2015 therewill still
be occasions of celebrationin
the many varied places of our Salesian world.In the letter in no
4L9 ofthe
AGCI wrote that the year
we had begun as a celebration of the 200 years since thebirth
of Don Bosco would havetwo
aspects: an external one, morepublic
and official, and anotherinterior
and moreintimate.
In
harmonywith what
Pope Francis wrotein
his messagefor
the opening of the Year of ConsecratedLife,
afirst
aim is"to

to the past
with gratitude,"'and
one could saythat
we have done preciselythis in our
celebrationof the Bicentenary
because we wanted to experienceit
as "anopportunity
for us to feelgratitude to the Lord for two
hundred yearsafter the birth of
Don Bosco, we are here as agift from
Godto
theyoung."'And in this
exter-nal, official
andpublic
aspect ofthe
hundredsof
celebrationsof all kinds that have taken
placewherever there is a
Salesian house, we have been able to acknowledge and givethanksfor this gift
of God that Don Bosco isfor
the Church and the world.But
just
nowI want rather to refer
tothe
other aspect of the Bicentenary moreinterior,
moreintimate,
and which leads meto think, to
wish andto
dreamwhat
deep traceswill
beleft by
ourliving
the unique,truly historical
event,in
our lives,in
the heart of each one of my SDB confreres, andin
my own heart.It
isthis that
is leading me todream.I
have a dream of somefruits of the celebration of the Bieentenary
asI will
now explain.2. BECAUSE, ALMOST WITHOUT REALISING IT, THE CONGREGATION IS BECOMING KNOWN AT

Provinces

32in this year and a half. Certainly this has not been accidental but
deliberately andcarefully
planned,well
awarethat the
demands were almost excessive,but
necessary given the singular natureof this
year.Added to the overview that each individual visit to the Provinces gives me is the knowledge that
comesfrom the
"snap-shots"
that in fact
are providedby the
consultationsthat take
placein the
Provincesin view of the appointment of
new Provincials.In
addition there is theinformation
and the opinionsthat
the confreres themselves offer in these consultations regard- ingthe
Province. There have been 21 new Provincials appointedin
thesefifteen
months.Together
with the
General CouncilI
have also hadthe
oppor-tunity to
deepenour
knowledgeof
some Provincesafter the

which have taken place andthe
serious examinationthat
we madeof two
Regions, thoseof South Asia and of
East Asia and Oceania.For
all
these reasonsI want to
sayto
you my dear confreres,that with
allthat I
have been able to visit, to get to know, to seefor
myself, reading andlistening to all the
adviceI
have been given,I
feelin
the position to be able to haue a dream aboutour
Congre-gation, in which the Lord
and Don Bosco, alwaysunder the
ma-ternal
gazeof our Mother the Help of Christians,

Just the contrary! That is not the
case.I
am convincedthat the majority
of us SDB are happy, very happyin living
our voca-tion. That
includesmyself
sinceI too
amvery
happy. However,I
believethat
we needto
come to a greater happiness, on euery- one'spart, with no
confrereremaining on the
sidelineson our journey, feeling that he
cannot manageor that this
goalis not for him. This
goalis for
everyone, sincehumanly
speakingthis
profound desire is rootedin the heart
of every man and woman,from
the moment we are calledinto
existence.It is for this
reasonthat I want to
sharewith you my
great dream.That of
a Congregationof
ours,in which
every Salesian cala say to himself,in his
deepest being,in his heart, in his
true self:I am
happyand I
feelfully
aliue andfull
ofjoy liuing
as a Salesian of Don Bosco".The Pope proposes to us as religious,
this
programme:"Being full

I believe, my dear confreres
that
this is the point: living ourlife
more intensely andwith
joy.I
couldput it in
my own words,but
we have already saidit in our last
General Chapterin which
we gave thanksto
God"for
the fi.d,elty of so many confreres andfor
theholiness that has
been recognised, bythe Chureh
of some members of the Salesian Family. Every day we arein
contactwith
adults and young people, confreres old and young, sickor at
the height oftheir activity
who bear witness tothe
fascination of the searchfor
God,the
radical approach ofthe
Gospel livedjoyfully
and
with
a keen passionfor
Don Bosco."nIt
is agift that
we havein our
Congregation:the
thousands and thousandsof
confrereswho
every day arelife-giving
and who givetheir
own liveswith
wonderful generosity.I

do not feel this way. There are Salesian confreres who in
their
lives and intheir
hearts carry the burden of wounds, confreres who feelthey
are miserable, who showtheir
sufferings! How muchI
wishthat with the strength that
comesfrom the Lord
andwith the affection
and closenessof
someother
confrerethey might
have confidence and once again hopefor
something goodin their
lives.There are confreres going through diffrcult situations or those who have lost
that
fervour of thefirst
Love we allfelt
at the Lord's call;there
are even perhaps confreres who arefollowing
apath that will bring them nothing worthwhile
as Salesiansof Don
Bosco.How happy
I
would beif
these confreres allowed themselves to be touchedby
God"to
gothat extra step";
how happyI would
beif they let
themselves be surprisedby
God.who without
doubt always leads us tolife
situationsfar
beyond our imaginings!My dear confreres no
matter
how extensive ornot
our knowl- edgeof
Don Bosco may be, we areall certain of
howimportant for Don
Boscothe
cheerfulness and happinessof his
Salesians and his boys was,not without
sacrifices, and of coursewith that
central and essentialpoint
ofliving in
God andfor
God. We have takenthe
mostimportant
and far-reaching decisionsin
our livesculminating in our
'Yes'to the Lord,
andafter that, all the
restought to be a help to our living "whole-heartedly" more fully,
conscious of ourliving
a lifefull
of significance and happywith it.
Already the
SGC20,quoting Euangelica Testificatio,
morethan
30 years ago,told
usthat "the joy
of beingthe Lord's for
ever is the incomparable
fruit
of the HolySpirit.
You have already had experience ofit. Filled with
this joy...learnto
facethe future with
confidence."uTo

my dear confreres. whatI
am sayingthrough this
dreamof
happinessfor
each one of usis that our beautiful vocation and dedication should not be only
ajob,
sometimes marked by exuberant joy, sometimes by an excessiveactivity that

each one of us lived

Don Bosco,forgetful
of one- self andfull
ofpassion for
Godand for the young.
In
fact among his many gifts, Don Bosco had the greatability to offer "to the
emarginated youngsters of histime
the possibili-ty
ofliving life
as a feast, andfaith
as happiness."uAs you can imagine,
this
dream of minefor
each one of us is closely connected towhat I
have already been ableto
experiencein
these 15 months as Rector Major,thinking
about each oneof our
confreres.For
exampleI
cannothide from you my
sadness every time a Salesian priest confrere writes asking me tofacilitate his entrance into a
diocese,after having first sought a
Bishopwilling
to satisfy his aspirations.I
ask myself:in
these situations what remains ofthe
lovefor
Don Bosco and the enthusiasmwith
which we became Salesians? Has what has been exprienced sofar
been only aform
of pastoralwork that
can easily be changedfor
another...? There comesto mind the incident
ofthe
young John Caglierofiercely going over in his mind while walking up
anddown in the
Valdoccocourtyard the
suggestionDon
Bosco hadjust
madeto him. As
weknow this
wasthe
proposalto form
a religious societyin
which the members would be called Salesians.After thinking it
over he declaredwith the well-known
expres- sion:"monk
or no monk,I
am stayingwith
Don Bosco".I
have beenthinking about that

1862,the day
onwhich 22 yowg men together with Don
Bosco madethe first
Salesian profession (BM
VII,
101). They wereordinary
lads who had grownup at
Don Bosco's side. They had hadthe
courageto start
a new Religious Congregation andto
maketheir
professionwith great enthusiasm, with trust in what Don
Bosco helpedthem

Thinking about our origins never
ceasesto
moveme
and confirms the strong convictionI
havethat putting
Godin
thefirst
place
in our
Iives and keeping young peoplein our
hearts, espe-cially the
poorest ones and those who have most need of us, weare marked out - I would almost
say"deterministically" - for
happiness as Salesians of Don Bosco.
I
really believethis
becauseit
is certain, asit
is saidin
the document of 'Aparecida',that "life
grows whenit is
donated and is weakenedin isolation
and com-fort. In
fact those who most benefit fromlife
are those who leave behindtheir
security and are passionately engaged in the mission of communicatinglife to others."'
3.2. I have a dream of a Congregation with Men of Faith filled with God
Why
this
dream? And why, you could ask me, are wenot like
that?Once again
I
haveto
saythat I
am convincedofthe
depthof faith
andthe
senseof
Godof
thousands and thousandsof our
Salesian confreres.Why then this
dream?This is the
answer:thinking
about the whole of our Congregation spread around theworld, a
delicatematter to which undoubtedly
we needto
giveattention
isthat in
many places,in
many ofthe
countries where we areworking with
somuch
dedication and generosity we areknown for the work
wecarry out but what is not known is why
we dowhat
weare doing
and wherethe vital
deepmotivation
comesfrom.
We areadmired for our work with the
young,our network
of schools is greatly appreciated, andin
these especially the technicaltraining
and work preparation. Our commitmentto
street children meetswith
great respect and support. The dedica-tion
andcreativity
foundin
many of the oratories is praised;our childrens'
homes and hostelsfor
poor youngsters receive a great dealofattention

However,
very
oftenthey
cannot say who we areor
even less why we are doingwhat
we do and why we areliving the
way welive. And
sothis is my dream: that whoever were to meet
a Salesian religious, or whoever were to comeinto
contactwith
one of our communities would feel touched by the presence of menof faith,
of a deep and provenfaith,
whoin their
simple way ofliving and acting,
almostwithout wanting to would let their state
as religious, men consecrated by and to God and byHim
consecrated to the young shine out.3.2.1. Ajourney of faith and the seareh for

believe my Brothersthat this
concern and perception isnot
new.In the
documentsof our
Congregation we can see how the 'greaLstruggle' in the
SGC20 was preciselythe
tension between consecration and mission.And
a magnificentwork
wasbrought to
conclusionin
thelight
of VaticanII,
toidentify
our charismin
a new way and at great depth and to reveal
it in
the wealth ofour new Constitutions. There were many years of discernment in three
General Chapters. The SGC20 andthe GC2l which
wisely consideredthe time of
six yearsof
experimentationfor the
new Constitutionsinsufficient
and extendedit
for another six, and the GC22in
which there was already a deepmaturing
processin
the concept of consecration asthe 'Action
of God'.I
believethat in our Congregation we
haveno problem
as regardsour
charismaticidentity or with the
harmony amongall the
elementsthat constitute it. From our Constitutions
and the many otherwritings
wefind
an abundant series of elementsthat
enlighten and enrichen us.The key is to
befound in living our identity
harmoniously.Many times we
havesaid and recalled that we are not
social workers nor are our works placesfor
social service nomatter
howgreat the
goodwe may be doing in them and through them.
We
are
aboveall
believers, persons consecratedby
Godin our
religious state, and "how much
goodit
doesus when he

more touches our lives and impels us
to
share his newlife!
What then happens isthat,
'what we have seen and heard we aretelling you' (1Jn
1,3)."'I
am profoundly convinced, Brothers,that this
is the pathfor which
nowadays we havethe
greatest need.That of caring
for,nourishing
and deepeningour
faiLh (being meru offaith), that
weare doing everything
that
we are doing because we feel ourselvesto
have beenattracted
and fascinatedby
Jesus andthat
freely we havefelt the
greatjoy
of saying "yes"to
Godthe
Father, who consecrates us alsoin
religious profession (menfilled with
God).'Reading some pages about religious
life
sometime
ago,I
was greatly impressed by the account given by a religious woman who wrotethat
on a certain occasionin
Vienna a Superior had spoken about an atheism ofold
agein
some religious, men and women, andthis Sister remarked that
she wasafraid that
weall
knew somereligious sister
(and malereligious,
we haveto
sayto
be fair'o), who only hadto
opentheir mouth for their
discontentto
be apparent..., and wecould
say manifest the secret disenchant- mentwith
regardto
God...,And
she asked herselfthe
question:"are perhaps our ways of
thinking, judging
and actingfrequently
conditionedby
afaith that is
asleep,by
arelationship with our
Godwithout
love?""In
the face ofthis
testimony,I
can hear echoingwithin
me the question in the psalm: "Where is your God?" (Psalm 42,4), orthat

wordsin the

and the Branches (Jn 15,1-11) which was a constant themein
our last General Chapter, areinviting
us to become aware ofthe
needto
bethoroughly
rootedin
Jesusin
orderto remain firmly in Him,
and throughHim
to live a life offraternity that
really isattractive
andthat
leads usto
serve the young.For
this
reason really having a dream about a Congregationof
men who areliving
byFaith
and arefull
of God isto
aim bythis
desire to makelhePrimacy of
God areality in
our liveswithout ever forgetting that
aboveall
elsewe ought to be
"seekersof God""
and witnessesto His
Lovefor
the young and among thesefor
the poorest.Our
preciousConstitutions, like a
Gospelread in
Salesianterms,
arefilled with this
senseof
God andthis call to faith
as wasin
an absolute manner thelife
and mission of Don Bosco.In them
we readthat
'as heworks for the salvation of the
young,the
Salesian experiencesthe
fatherhoodof God"
(C.l2), maintaining
a simple andheart-to-heart
colloquywith
theliving Christ
andwith the
Father, whom we feel closeat
hand.And
so, consciousof
God'scall to form part of the
Salesian Society (cf.C.22)
andliving out the
sign of aloving
encounter between the Lord who calls and the disciple who responds he makes one of themost lofty
choices abeliever
canmake
(cf. C. 23).At the
sametime,
immersedin
theworld
andin

Godthrough
thoseto whom he
is sent. (cf. C. 95).My Brothers with the light that our Constitutions

necessary to add anything elsewith
regard tothis dream.I just
repeat theinvitation I
gave you at the conclusionof the General
Chapter.With the
deepestconviction, in my first talk - in the
so-called closing address,which
hasa
clearintent
of forward-planning - I told you that I refuse to
acceptthat
the "fragility
we seein living the
primacy of Godin our lives"
is somethingthat
ispart
of our Salesian DNA. No,I
said at thetime
andI
repeatit
now.It
is not, sinceit
wasnot
sofor
Don Bosco; onthe contrary
helived his
wholelife with
deepfaith, filled with
God, and
for this
reason gavehis life to the last breath for
and alwaysfor the
sakeof his
boys.He lived radically
caughtup in

is my dream todayfor our
Congregation andfor
each one of us, Salesians of Don Bosco.3.3. I have a dream of a Congregation of Salesians full of passion for the young, the poorest ones

dreams, an obviousfruit
ofthe

Bicentenary.I
am convinced of the precious value of the witness of so many confreres who are givingtheir
lives every daywith
real educative and evangelising passion onbehalf
ofthe
yong;I
am convincedthat
there iue many Salesian centresthat
are looking at the poor- estwith
a specialpreferential
love.I
givethanks to the Lord for this,
andI
am sayingto you
asI
didearlier:
Brothers we have"to
gofurther', all Salesians in order to
be thosewho with
aheart like Don
Bosco's,with the
heart likethat
of the Good Shepherd give the best of ourselves on behalf of the young. And Salesian houses which are notin

manner at the service of the poorest ought to cause us pain. We have to be creatiue sothat
everythingthat
we do,think
and decide
in
some way is for them, for those who have most need of us.Pope Francis
in the
message already quoted says: "Wake upthe world, illuminate it with your
prophetic andcountercultural witness!""
I
reallythink that our
Salesian way ofilluminating
theworld
in a prophetic and countercultural way is with this radical
approachin all
of us andin all
our presences. Anddon't
have the slightest doubtthat in living
andworking in this
way, andwith-
out any need for words, the message is challenging andwith
great power as a witness; and have no doubtthat the
meansto
reachthe
poorestwill not
belacking. Let us remember Don
Bosco'sfirm trust in
Divine Providence, when we provide the motivesfor this
to happen certainly.3.3.1.
Because throughout the years we haae always
said,and reminded
ourseloeswhat
thepath
ofour fidcleity is
With this title I want to point out
howin our
Congregation there has always beenthe Official
Teachingthat
has directed ustowards the preferential option for the
poorestyoung
people.Then, every confrere, every local and provincial
community, andat the very
centreof the
Congregation, we needto
makeit
become reality. Pope Francis reminds us
that
the hope heinvites
usto
have isnot
based on statisticsor
accomplishments,but
onthe One in whom we
haveput our trust (cf. 2 Tim 1:2),
and invites usnot
toyield
to thetemptation to
seethings in
termsof numbers and efficiency, and even less to trust in our

In our
Constitutions there are seven articlesthat refer to
the poorest young people as our preferred option, and another fivethat
direct our attention to the need to have solidaritywith
the poor.In
our General Chapters we find a progressive succession of reminders concerning
this "fundamental option"
(asit
wascalled at the
Assembly of the Bishops of Latin-America of Puebla). The SGC20 spoketo
us of channellingour
effortsto
the poorest of the young and to adults mostin
need, i.e. to those who have the least possibil-ity
of realisingin their
lives the designs of God.'u The GC21 issues aninvitation to

dimension of ours, of evangelisation and of being educators to thefaith.

believe there are other challenges and otherdifficulties.
Onegreat
challengeis the effort
neededto take on this task
and mission,in
spite of the factthat
very oftenit
isdifficult,
when the young people are not exactly readyfor it
nor do they feel motivat- edby it. There are
somecontinents -
andthe outsanding
oneI
feelin this
regard is Europe-
where the explicit proclamationof the
Gospel, evenwhen this is
donewith the appropriate
tech- niques and educational method doesnot
alwaysfind
afield
suit- able forcultivation.
Then the reaction of drawing back is very hu- man,or
even more sothat of
stopping half-way andof
spending more and more timewith
theintroductory
elementsthat
open the way to aninitiation
to thefaith. It
isfor this
reasonthat
thefirst
great challenge is to be convinced ofthe
highest importancethat
our mission has, and to find the necessary energy for us to becomefully
engagedin it,
even though we know we shall not be receivedwith
enthusiasmnor attention.
On the other hand, we need to be awarethat
thesesituations of difficulties, indifference and at
times rejection have accompanied the work of evangelisationfrom the
earliest times. Alsoquite often the diversity of the
religious contexts slows us downin the
proclamation of JesusChrist,
and we can stopshort at
social andhumanitarian activity, which in itself is
good,but if
evangelisation and educationto the faith
do not formpart
ofit
we are only half-way there.And to this challenge of
coldness,indifference, including the rejection
of a needfor

various contextsin which

preoccupationwith structures, the administrative
burdensthat
we feel we must bear, the management,growth
andoverlapping of activities, and many other things restrict us in certain situations.

can take us away from being among young people, andif

readingthe letters of
Don Rua, Don Albera and Don Rinaldi, addressed tothe
Congre-gation in the first
decades ofits
existence,I greatly
appreciatedthe direction they
gaveto them. They are simple letters, very familiar in
stylethat try to
capture the mood ofthe growth,
de- velopment and organisation ofthe
Congregation,with its lights
and shadows andwith the
great challengesthat
were appearing,including
among thesethe first world
war. They areletters that point
out therisk
of "neglecting" what was centralin
Don Bosco:in
shortthe
"Damihi
animas ceteratolle", our
Evangelising and Educating nowadays, beingtotally
dedicated to the young andfor them. In the
face ofthis
challengethey did not
hesitateto
givesimple but very strong reminders about not neglecting the
fundamental reason for which Don Bosco gavelife

In harmony with this conviction of the
Rector Majors-

and most recent ones,in

Don Bosco had a desire to become a missionary. Don Cafas- so, accompanyinghim in his
vocational discernment, "blocked"that
path,telling him that
the missions were notfor him

2, 160-161). However he always hadthis
ideain mind
andin
hisheart
and he realisedit through
his sons.Starting
on 11 Novem-ber
1875, he chosefrom the
groupofhis first
Salesians those he would send to Americato
providefor the spiritual
needs of emi-grants
andto bring the
Gospelto
peoplewho did not know it.
From that first
expeditionuntil the
one due next 27 September 2015there
have been 146.Shortly after the first expedition of
Salesians, year
after
yearthe
Daughters ofMary Help of
Chris-tians
alsowent to the
mission lands. Nowadaysthis
departure ceremonyfrequently
includesthe
presenceof lay
missionaries male and female.We should
not forget a
factthat
speaksfor itself
and whichI
mentionedin
a previousletter
(AGC 419).At
Don Bosco's death,in
America there were 153 Salesians,that
is 20Vo of the Salesiansat the time,
asthe
catalogueof the
Congregationfor that
year records.In
one of his letterswritten in
1912Fr
Paul Albera states, re-ferring to
Don Bosco:"The
missions were aprivilged
subjectof

and he knew howto
inspirein
hearts a strong desireto
become missionaries,in

most nat-ural thing in

have always been convincedthat the missionary dimen- sion is an essential and constitutiae feature
