a special occasion.I
have chosen asthe title
ofthis first letter
of minethe
same as the oneI
gave to mycontribution
atthe
conclusionof the
G27since I believe that in the contents of the Chapter a
whole programmeof
reflection andof
actionfor a
six year periodis
to be found, onethat
we needto
examine more closelyat
differenttimes
andin different
ways.It is my intention to refer to
someof the key
issuesof the
General Chapter,but in the first
place and before anything elseI
want to convey to each and to everyone of youmy
Salesian Confreres,all
my affection, and my wishthat
sometime somewherein our
'Salesianworld' we may

Rector Majors we have had,I found it very
movingjust to write this
account' One seesin all of them that this
beginningof their
service was somethingvery
special indeed.Fr Michael RUA (Blessed), who wrote his first letter
as Rector Majoron
19March
1888,after the Holy
See's recognition andthe
decreewhich
confirmedhim
as Rector Major, saysthat
after theletter
sent bythe
Superior Chapter,for
thefirst time
he waswriting to
themin
his new role as Rector Major, towhich "in
spiteof
my unworthinessI
haue been led by Diuine Prouidencein
sucha
waythat it
has been made clear toall
ofyou"'.
Having saidthis,
tr'r Rua explainsthat after
a private audiencewith
Pope LeoXIII,
the Cardinal Vicarin
hisfinal
words had said:"I
recommend toyou
the causeof Don
Bosco;I
recommend toyou

Bosco."2 Afterwards he expressed histotal
convictionthat
the Salesians oughtto
beworthy
sonsof
such a great Father as Don Bosco was, sothat the main effort

methods practised and taughtby

Having said this, further on in the same letter entitled:
"... LInder the burden of responsibility", Fr Albera writes

Christians, confreres, novices, sisters, cooperators, past pupils, devotees andfriends of Don

elevencountries on television, by 'Eurovision'. His thoughts dwelt on the contrast with the humble
and unknownbirth of our Father
150years before. He
beganto reflect
on Providence andin his heart to intone the
Magnificat.Further

affectionate andsincere love and great
confidenceof those at the side of the
Rector Major to help and comforthim,
and to be as real sons and brothershis friendly
and active collaborators.Finally he

wasthe task of Fr Juan Edmundo VECCHI, in his
roleas Vicar,
to transmit the
messageof
hopein
memoryof Fr
E' Vigand after his death on23 June 1995.After the
serene farewellofthe
seventh successorofDon
Bosco, he guided the Congregationtowards the celebration of the
GC24,which he began on
18February
1996with the opening
sessionand
closedas
RectorMajor
on 20April.
So
it
is understandablethat,
having assumedthe
governmentof the
Congregationprior to the
Chapteqhis first letter
dated 8 September 1996, onthe
ApostolicExhortation "Vita
consacrata",did not make any
referenceto the beginning of his
service as Rector Major.In this
way thereis
a difference comparedwith all the
previous situations.Finally, Fr Pascual
CHAYE,Z, elected RectorMajor at
the GC25, beginshis frrst letter to all the
confreres sometime
after the closing ofthe
Chapter which he describes as a strong Salesianspiritual
experience.The Chapter
documentsat that time
hadjust arrived in the
Provincesand,
ashe writes, he wanted
to make "contdct with you throughthis
myfirst circular
letter. Letter'writing
was theform of
apostolic practice adopted bySt Paul
toouercome physical distances and the impossibility of being present

Thinking about my poor self, I can tell you that

Congregation andthe
SalesianFamily of which we form part - I should like

those uery special characterisflcswhich
marked eachof the
previous RectorMajors,
as regardstheir
theological and social context andthe
stageof
development ofthe
Congregation.It is not
possiblein
a few linesto
describethe path
we have followedin our
Congregation.A very
carefully preparedhistorial publication would be required; but in any
casethe historical
expertsof our
Congregationwould
acceptthat it is
possible tospeak about
the
characteristic stages: thoseof
the Foundation,of
the Consolidation andStructuring (with
considerable growth andexpansion), of the Postconciliar Reuision and
TheologicalDefinition,
of the Pastoral Projection of the Mission, andthe
stage of SalesianIdentity and
theRadical
Gospel Nature ofour life
as Consecrated Persons.All of this of
course has been enriched bythe many directives and options
madeby General
Chapters, subsequently takenup
and madetheir
own by the various Rector Majors.The inheritance we
have receivedis a very rich
oneand it
makes even
greater our responsibility
beforethe Lord,
before Don Bosco and also before thosewho in
previous ages gave the very best of themselves.You
might ask
mewhat position I take up in this
situationand what programme of animation and
gouernnxenlone
can expect. PersonallyI
can sharewith
youwhat I
said on 25 March.This is
howI
feelI
amliving my
life:.
Fromthe Faith
standpoint,I
amaband'oning myself to the Lord.
.
BecauseI hnow that I am not
alon'e, already experiencingin
my
life that'interior strength'that
comes from theSpirit ("My
grace is sufficientfor you"), that is
lhe presence of the Mother ("Son, this is your mother"...). AndI
am not alone because I feelthat fraternal
andhelpful
communion onthe part
of SalesianTHE RECTOR MAJOR 13
Confreres (those of you who are at my side on a daily basis and those of you who are
in
manyparts
ofthe world
as so many examples of ' Don Bosco today' for the young people dependent on you). AndI
am not alone becauseI
also feel thewarmth
of the affection andthe kind
considerationthat I
receivefrom
our Salesian Family..
And I amlivingcoruying
the young peoplein
myheart.|feel
this very strongly and in a special way the poorest, those most
in
need, the excluded ones.
As far
asthe
Programmeof Animation and
Gouernmentfor the six year
periodis
concerned,the
GC27 gave indicationsfor this in a
splendid manner, andI
haveno
doubtthat
everythingthat
we wouldwant is
containedin it, in
one wayor
another.The programme
for the
six-year periodwill
be:.
To continueto
cultivateour Charismatic Identity in total
fidelity to Don Bosco, a new identity in the forms and expressionsit
takes 200 years after hisbirth,
but identical in thepurity
and essential character of his charism which we have received as our inheritance..
To guaranteein
all parts ofour
Congregation our condition as consecrated persons, men who freely choose to take our placefulfilling
God,'sDesign
being mysticsin our daily life.
.
Taking care of the human, affective and vocationallife
of each confrere and of our communities. We really want to dream of theUtopia of an iruesistible
Gospel-based,fraternal life.

To witnessin
a more eloquent and evident mannerthrotghthe sobriety and austerity of our
liaes,our Poaerty which is
Work and, Temper&nce..
Tolive out to its ultimate
consequencesthe option for the
poorest young people with humility, without triumphalism,
but
as in the times of Don Bosco so that we mightbe
knownprimarily for
these options, decisions and actions..
And we are not doing all this on our own. We form part of alarge SalesianFamily which
also needsto
growin its identity

sense
of
belonging,and we
have availableto us lhe great strength of a laity that is well trained
and,committed to a
Shared.Mission.I put into
my own words whatthe
GC24 said eighteenyears
ago:At this time, the shared mission with the laity is no longer an option, it is a charismatic
necessity.8. BELONGING MORE TO GOD
I must
confess dear Confreresthat
expressions such as Theprimacy of God, Mystics in the Spirit, God's Design,
God's Closeness,Union with
God, Seehersof God...
are phrases whichset my heart beating, telling me that here we
have somethingimportant, that this
isthe
key,all the
rest on which we spend somuch energy
'is
given us as anextra,' or 'falls like ripe fruit', in
other words follows naturally,is
guaranteed.At the
sametime, with
great sincerityI
haveto
confessto
ofear that I
havefelt in a similar
wayduring
my yearsof
serviceas Provincial: I feel that in speaking like this there can
be confrereswho simply
distance themselves,who
considerall
this'a priori',
as outdated theolory, as a modelwhich

communityin

theface of this weak situation in not a few of our
