Continuing our century-old
tradition,

a call to today's world, and especially to the Church, to live life as a vocation and as a call to holiness; a holiness made flesh in this present time, today, wherever each one may be,in

should imaginethat not
a few people, even among ourselves and certainly among the many young people who heard the pope,scall,
havefelt that the word "holiness" may
sound somewhat remote,in
many cases very remote andunfamiliar
in the language of today's world.It
is quite possiblethat
there arecultural
obsta- clesor interpretations that tend to
confusethe path of
holinesswith
akind
of alienatingspiritualism that
is fleeingfrom
reality.Or
perhapsat
bestthe term
"holiness"is
understood as a word appliedto
and applicable onlyto
those who are veneratedin
the pictures or statuesin
our churches.Therefore, what the Pope is doing is quite admirable and even
"daring"
as he presents the perennial relevance ofChristian
holi- nessthat is to
be seen as a call comingfrom
GodHimself in
his Word, and is proposed as the goalin
every person's journey. God«rürants us to be saints and
not to
settlefor
a bland and mediocre existence"(G8,1).
The call to holiness is a
natural part
ofour
salesiantradition (saint
Francisof
sales). The appeal of Pope Francisattracts
at-tention
aboveall
on account ofthe
force andthe
determinationwith
which he maintainsthat
holiness is a call addressed to every- one, notjust
to the few,in
sofar
asit
corresponds to God,s funda-mental plan for
us.It is
aimed thereforeat ordinary
people,at
those people we accompanyin their
ordinary daily lives consistingin
the simple things typical of ordinary people.It
isnot
about a holinessfor the
heroic fewor for
exceptional people,but
about an ordinary way ofliving
anordinary Christian

life:
a way ofliving Christian life
rootedin the
present daywith
the dangers, the challenges and the opportunitiesthat
God offers us as life unfolds.Sacred Scripture invites us to be holy: "You therefore must be
perfect
asyour
heavenlyFather is perfect" (Mt 5,4Ù; and:
"Be holyfor I
[theLord]
amholy"
(Leu 1t,44).There is
then
anexplicit invitation to
experience and to bear witnessto the
perfection of Iovethat is not
somethingdifferent
from holiness. Holiness,in
fact, consistsin
the perfection of love;a Iove
that
above all was made fleshin
Christ.saint
Paul in the letter to the Ephesians referring to the Father also writes:"In
[Christ, the Father] chose us before the foundationof the world, that
we should beholy
and blameless before him.He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus
christ
according to the purpose of hiswill to
the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on usin the
Beloved"(Eph t,4-6).
No longer servants thereforebut
friends (cf.Jn
15,15). No longer strangers and sojournersbut
fellow citizenswith
the saints and membersof
the household of God (cf. Eph 2,19). Therefore each and every one of us is called to holiness:that
is to afull
and fulfrlled life according to God's plan,in
communionwith Him
andwith
our brothers and sisters.It
is therefore not a questionofa
perfection reservedto
a few,but
of a call addressed to everyone.Something that is infinitely valuable yet not a rarity, but rather
ispart
of the common vocation of believers.It
is the beau-tiful
proposalthat
God makes to every man and \ryomaTr.It
is not thepursuit
of a falsespirituality that
takes one av/ayfrom the
fullnessof life, but the
fullness of beinghuman
made perfect by Grace."Life

as Jesus promised.Not with
a standardised,trivialised, rigid
approach;but
a re-sponse
to the
ever-ne\ry breath ofthe Spirit, that
creates commu- nion while showing appreciation for the differences-

is not a questionofa
collection ofabstract values subscribedto and shown outward
respect,but of a harmony of all
those virtuesthat
incarnate the real valuesin
one's life.It
is not merely theability
to reject evil and embrace good,but
a constantattitude
ready withjoy
to live the goodlife
well.It is not
a goalthat
is reachedin
aninstant, but
an ongoingjourney
accompaniedby
God's patience and kindness,that in-
volves personal freedom and commitment.It
is not an attitudethat
excludes what is different, but rather a fundamental experiencing of what is true, good,just
and beautiful.Finally, holiness is
living
accordingto
the beatitudes, so as to become salt andlight in
the world;it
is journey towards beingful- ly
human asis
every genuinespiritual
experience. Therefore be- comingholy
doesnot
requirecutting
ourselvesoff from our
orffnnature or from our
brothers and sisters,but rather living a full
and courageoushuman life
andan
experience (sometimes hard won) of communion and relationshipwith
others."Becoming a saint" is the first and most urgent task for
the Christian
Saint Augustine declares:
"My life will
betrue life, all full of
thee"5.
It
isin Him,
God Himselfthat
the possibility of the pathof
holiness
in
following Christ is to be found. The path of holiness is made possiblefor
a Christian by thegift
of Godin Christ: in Him -
of whom the saints and especially theVirgin
Mary are a marvel- lous reflection-
is revealed simultaneously the fullness of the face of the Father and thetrue
face of man.In
JesusChrist
the face of God and the face of man shineout
"together". In Jesus we meet the man from Galilee and the face
of
the Father: "He who has seen me has seen theFather" (Jn

Jesus the Word made flesh is the complete and definitive word of the Father. From the moment of the incarnation, the
will
of God isfulfrtled in
the person ofChrist.
He shows usin
hislife, in
his words andin his
silences,in the
choices he makes andin his
ac- tions, and aboveall in
his passion, death and resurrection, what God's plan is for man and woman, what Hiswill
is and the way to comespond toit.
This plan of God for each one of us today is simply the fullness of
Christian life that
is measured accordirug to the extent to whichChrist
liueswithin
us and to the degreein
which,with
the graceof
theHoty Spirit
wemodel our lives on that of
Jesusthe
Lord.Therefore
it
doesnot
mean doing extraordinary thingsbut living in union with the
Lord, making his actions, his thoughts and be- haviour ours.In
fact going to Holy Communion means expressing and bearing witness to the factthat
we want to take up and make our o\ryn the style oflife,
the way ofliving
and the very same mis- sion of Jesus Christ.The Second Vatican Council
itself in the Constitution
on the Churchfïrmly
proposed the uniuersal call to holiness and declaredthat
no one rffas excluded:"In
the various types and duties of life, one andthe
same holiness is cultivatedby all
who are moved bythe Spirit
of God and who obeythe
voice ofthe
Father, worship-ping
Godthe Father in spirit
andin truth, following the
poorChrist the
humble and cross-bearingChrist in
orderto
be madeworthy
of being partakersin
hisglory" (LG,4l).
The "holiness of next-door neighbours" and the universal call to holiness
Edith
Stein, whilestill
an atheist, wrote about having received a decisive impetus towards conversionfrom two
encounters: onewith the wife
of afriend killed in the
war, who having become a widow,in spite of intense sorrow
demonstratedthe surprising
light
and strength offaith;
the other wasin
a church (whereEdith
had gone simplyout of artistic interest) with
an elderly \Moman who had comein with her
shopping basketsin the middle of
aTHE RECTOR MAJOR 9
busy day
to
spenda moment of
deeptrust
andadoration with
Jesus
in
the Blessed Sacrament.Don Bosco had as
his
mother andfirst
teacher Margaret Oc- chiena: a simple uneducated peasant'woman,with
no theologicaltraining, but with
a wiseheart
and an obedience based onfaith.
Saint Teresa of Lisieux used
to
saythat
as achild
she under- stoodlittle
ofwhat the priest
was saying,but it
was enoughfor her to
lookat the
faceof her father Louis to
understand every- thing.None of these lay people
-

ordinary way of acting.The presence of these simple and determined people, of these
«next-door
saints" -
as PopeFrancis
describesthem (GE,
7)-
reminds us
that what is important in life
isto
be holy,not to
be declared saints one day.In
addition,it
helps to reflect on the factthat
the canonised saints,first
of all reached the simple holinessof the
peopleof
God:they all
sharethe
sameglory in a
deep and unswerving communion.To live holiness then is the experience of being forestalled and saved, and Iearning
to
correspondto this faithful
love.It is
the responsibility of responding to a greatgift.
From this point
of view, perhaps oneof the
mostimportant
contributions toChristian spirituality
isthat
made by the Bishopof
GenevaFrancis of
Saleswith his efforts to
propose holinessfor
eueryonetaking
"deuotion"out
of the cloistersinto
the world.In his
splendidwork "Introduction
to the DeuoutLife"
he writes:"As in the creation God commanded the plants to bring
forth their
fruits
each one accordingto its kind,
so he commandsall

who arethe living plants
ofhis
Churchto bring forth
thefruits
of devotion, each according to hisquality

Devotion ought then to be not only
differently
exercised by the gentleman, the tradesman, the servant, the prince, the widow, themaid and the married woman but its practice should be
also adaptedto the
strength,the
employments andthe
obligationsof
each onein particular [...]
Wherever,then,
we are, rffe may, and should aspire to a perfect life"u.The history of the Church is strongly
markedby the
many\ryomen and
the
many men, whowith their faith, with their
love andwith their
lives have been like beaconsthat
haveilluminated
and continue toilluminate
so many generationsthroughout
timeincluding the present. They are a living testimony to how
the power of the Risen Lord intheir
lives has reached such a levelthat
like St Paul they have been able to declare (so many timeswithout
using the words:"It
is no longerI
who live,but
Christ who livesin me" (Gal
2,20).And they
havedemonstrated this,
sometimesthrough the
heroismof their virtues
and sometimesthough
the sacrifice oftheir
livesin martyrdom,
andat
other timesthrough
"a
life
constantly offeredfor
others evenuntil death" (G8,5). At the
sametime there is
a holinesswithout
a name,that of
those who have not achieved the honours of the altar, whose " lives maynot
always have been perfect, yet even amidtheir faults
and fail- ings they kept moving forward and proved pleasingto the Lord"
(GE, 3).
This
isthe
holiness ofour
ownmother or
grandmotheror
of others closeto
us;it is the
holiness of a marriagewhich
is abeautiful path of growth in
love;the
holinessof fathers
who develop, grow to maturity, and give themselves generously totheir
children,often with
unexpected sacrifices.Men
and women, the Pope recalls, whowork hard to
supporttheir
families.The
sick who beartheir
illnesspatiently
andwith
aspirit
offaith, in
unionwith the
suffering Jesus; elderly religious,with
alife
given and who never losetheir
smile ortheir
hope... (cf.GE,7).
It
can be saidwith
certaintythat in
every age of thehistory of
the Church and everywherein
the world there have been andstill

are saints of
all
ages, andin all
conditions oflife with
very differ- ent personal characteristics.Pope Benedict
XVI
expressedthis very well
when. speaking about his personal experience, he said:"I
shouldlike to
addthat
for me
it
is not only the great saintsthat I
love and know well who arethe
"sign-posts",but
also the simple saints,that
isto
say the good peoplethat I
seein my life,
whowill
never be canonized.They are ordinary
people, onemight
say,without any
signsof
heroism,but in their
every-day goodnessI
seethe truth of
thefaith"'.
Certainly
wefind all this
isthe
way so many people have in- carnated the Christian path intheir
lives. Some may seem"small"
and others
"great"; but all
have followed anattractive
and fasci- nating journey.Pope Benedict concludes
with
a very valuable expression whichin
my judgment sums upin
a magnificent way the message of the Strenna forthis
year, when he says: "Dear friends, how great and beautiful but also simple is the Christian uocation seen in thislight!
We are
all
called to holiness; that is what the Christianlife
is"'.Mary of Nazareth: a unique light on the path of holiness All
these simple and very often anonymous paths of holiness always have a modelto
look to and on which to reflect.Christian
holiness hasin Mary
of Nazareth, theMother
ofthe Lord,
of the Son of God the mostbeautiful
and the closest model.Mary
is the woman ofthe
"HereI
am," offull
andtotal
avail-ability
to thewill
of God. Saying:"let it
be to me according toyour word" (Lk
1,38),Mary
is sayingthat
she findsfull
and deep hap- pinessin everything that "let it be" implies in faith. Not only
whenthe
Son leaves home andis
separatedfrom
her because he hasto carry out the
mission ofthe
Father;but
alsoat the final

is, from this point of view to contemplate Mary and to meditate on the value of human

courageous acceptanceof
God'smysterious plan
leads Mary to become the mother of all believers, the model for each one of usin

and welcoming the Word of God andthe
safe guide towards holiness. Andthis
because she teaches usthat
only God can makeour life

God is great is humankind also great. With Mary, we must begin to understandthat
this is so.We must not
drift
away from Godbut
make God present; we must ensurethat
He is greatin
our lives. Thus, we toowill
become di- vine; all the splendour of the divinedignity will

this
reasonit
is impossibleto think that the
easypath of
holiness can be followed by the Christian
without
having recourse to Mary our Mother. Looking to her is to learn how to believe, how to hope, how to love. Andif
we pray like her andwith
her we shall certainly experience in our daily journeythat
consolationthat
can comeonly from
God.In addition invoking her
asthe Mother of the
Son of God we shall openour
heartsto the gift
ofher inter-
cession asMother
of the Son and of her sons'o.With Salesian sensitivity...
Therefore
it
could be saidthat to
becomea saint is to
have everything.If
one doesnot
become asaint
one loses everything.The goal of holiness and the
invitation
almost tender, to achieveit

is also the great message of Don Bosco, the pivot on which hinges his whole
spiritual
proposal and his life witness.The holiness
that
Don Bosco proposes is easy and pleasant,but
also strong as he suggests.In
Dominic Savio's declaration:"I
wantto
becomea saint, I must
becomea saint. I
can haveno
peaceuntil I
become asaint,",
one can hear much- if not
everything-
of
what
Don Bosco had managedto
conveyto him,
following the sermonin
which Dominic had heard these encouraging words:"It
is easy to become a saint. Everyone should become a saint. There is a great reward
waiting in
heavenfor
those whotry to
become saints"'2. Don Bosco himself continuedwriting that this talk
waslike
a sparkthat
set offinto
a consumingblaze the love of Godin
Dominic Savio's heart.In
the wisdom of Don Bosco, who curbed Dominic's desirefor
penance and recommendedto him
insteadfidelity in his life of
prayer,in his
studies andin duties
donewell,
and diligencein
recreation (and we can also sayin
the whole area of relationshipsin life), there
emergesthe
awareness,typically
Salesian,of
the universal call to holiness.In
foundingthe
Societyof Saint
Francisof
Salesin the first
place, andthen (together with Mary
Domenica Mazzarello the co-foundress)the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of
Christians Don Bosco proposed as the object,right
up to today, the sanctification ofits

Rua remindedthe

afterwards when he exhorted themin

well that the first,
most radical and decisive way to help others is to be saints.In this

blessedness. We Christiansfind
happiness when we follow Jesus Christ.These words are directed towards the young. They are meant
for
them.But
we knowvery well that
"holinessis
alsofor
ÿou», concerns everyone:the
young, educators,fathers
and mothers, consecrated lay people, men and rüi/omen religious, priests.In
short these words ofmine
are directed towards each and every oneof
the members of our Salesian Family,in
such a waythat
we all feel included, andnaturally
they concern all the People of God.Very
beautiful
arethe
messagesthat with great
conviction, PopeJohn Paul II,
Pope BenedictXVI
and PopeFrancis,

his message to young people of every age and of the whole world.He wants them to be happy, as a goal in the dreams of every young person, today, tomorrow, always. But not

the heart of every young person.The world,

can assure youthat in
one rffayor
anotherall
ofthem
consider holiness as an aim and a purposefor
which \Me are born and also as religiousinstitutions, with
theintention
of achievingit in
our lives. Therefore a holinessthat
is proposed to each of the members as the purposeofthe
apostolate directed towards others.Youth

Convinced
that "
Holinessis the
mostattractive
faceof

consistent manner isit
possible to accompany the young on the ways of holiness.When Saint Ambrose declared
that
«êverÿ age is ready for ho- liness,23, so toowithout
doubt isyouth! In the
holiness of many young people the Church recognises the grace of God,that
antici- pates and accompaniesthe life
story of each one,the
educational value of the sacraments of the Eucharist and of Reconciliation, thefruitfulness
of shared journeysin faith
and charity, the prophetic impact of these "champions" trho have often sealedin their
bloodtheir
being disciples of Christ and missionaries of the Gospel. The language most requested by young people of today is the witness of an authenticlife.
Forthis
reason thelife
of young saints is the real word ofthe
Church; andthe invitation to
undertake a holylife
is the onethat
is most necessaryfor
today's young people.An
authenticspiritual vitality

pedagory of holiness donot
disappointthe
deep aspirations ofthe

growth, for joy,for

various surveys including thosein
preparationfor the
Synod of Bishops on the young, the young people themselves recognisethat they are

presentthem in

is adapted totheir
age and condition.It

Perhaps nowadays reference

crossis not
so common among us,but

part
during the last Synod in the canonizationof
Saint PaulVI,
celebrated togetherwith that
of six other saints,I find
these wordsof his most appropriate: "What would
aGospel be,
that
is to say aChristianity without
the cross,with-
out the suffering,without
the sacrifice of Jesus?It
would be a Gospel, aChristianity without the
Redemption,without
Sal- vation, of which we have an absolute need. The Lord saved uswith
the Cross; he has given us back hope, theright
to lifewith
his death. Carrying the Cross!
It
is a greatthing, a
greatthing
my dear children!
It
means facing up to lifewith
courage,with- out
weakness andwithout
cowardice;it
meanstransforming into moral enerry the inevitable difficulties of our life; it
means, knowing how
to

holiness sothat it does not come between us and our obligations, concerns, affections but
includes them allin
love. Holiness is the perfection of love and therefore corresponds to man's fundamental need:that of
being loved and of loving. The holier a man or woman may be

more humanthey
are because:"life

have a mis- sionbut
is a mission"(G8,27).
Holiness therefore is a
process of becoming more human.
"We need a
spirit
of holiness capable offilling
both our solitude and our service, our personal lives and our evangelizing efforts, sothat
every moment can be an expressionof
self-sacrificing lovein the Lord's
eyes.In this

ofour
lives can be a step along the path to growbhin

So holiness coincides
with the complete flowering of all that is human. It
is not a proposed way ofliving that
