Contents V

It is my great pleasure and privilege to introduce another volume on modern musculo- skeletal imaging edited by A. M. Davies and J. Hodler following two already published, superb and highly successful volumes on imaging of the knee, edited by A.M. Davies and V. N. Cassar-Pullicino, and imaging of the foot and ankle, edited by A. M. Davies, R. W. Whitehouse and J.P.R. Jenkins.

The concept of these volumes is based on comprehensive coverage both of the ima- ging modalities and of the applications of all these techniques to a specifi c anatomical area and all the pathological conditions related to it.

The short “gestational” period of this volume – less than 18 months between the be- ginning of the project and fi nal manuscript delivery to the publisher – ensures, as in the two foregoing volumes, that the most recent advances in shoulder imaging and radiolo- gical management are covered.

I am greatly indebted to Dr. Davies and Dr. Hodler for their brilliant editorial work and personal contributions. I congratulate them on their judicious choice of contribu- ting authors, all well-known experts in the fi eld.

I am convinced that this excellent volume will be of great interest for both radiolo- gists in training and certifi ed radiologists, and also for orthopaedic surgeons and rheu- matologists. It is my sincere wish that this work meet with the same success as so many previous volumes in the series Medical Radiology – Diagnostic Imaging.

Preface

As our understanding of the disease processes and the biomechanics of shoulder disor- ders improves, there is a need to continuously update radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals working in this fi eld. Several recent texts on the shoulder have concentrated on a single imaging technique such as MR imaging. This book, in common with several others published in this series, takes a dual approach to the subject.

The fi rst section acquaints the reader with the full range of techniques available for imaging shoulder pathology, emphasising the indications and contraindications. The six chapters include contributions on radiography, computed tomography and CT arthrog- raphy, magnetic resonance imaging and MR arthrography, ultrasound and interven- tional techniques. The remaining 13 chapters discuss the optimal application of these techniques to specifi c pathologies, highlighting practical solutions to both common and uncommon clinical problems.

The discerning reader may note a few minor contradications in the text (recom- mended gauge of needle, volume of contrast medium, use or not of local anaesthetics for arthrography, etc.), refl ecting the different practises of the authors. The editors have deliberately not edited out these inconsistencies, thereby allowing the reader to appreci- ate that, even between centres of excellence, practises can and will vary.

The editors are grateful to the international panel of authors for their contributions to this book, which aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current imaging of the shoulder.
