Chapter 1
Abstract
Figure 1.1: Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team simulator.
The scope of this work is to investigate the driveability and the stability of a Formula 1 car through steady-state manoeuvres. Simulations are carried out for several vehicle conditions (entry, mid and exit corner) and for di↵erent setups.
The stability analysis is based on two approaches, both computed with the same steady-state data. The first approach is through Maps of Achievable Performance (MAPs) which give a picture of the car behaviour in its achievable domain. The second approach is based on a single track model derived from the complete model with some fundamental hypotheses.
Di↵erent stability and driveability indexes are analysed and compared with dif-ferent setups and vehicle condition in order to give an objective stability channel to compare with the driver feeling.
